Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. While Volume 31 reports theses submitted in 1986, on occasion, certain univer sities do re port theses submitted in previousyears but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Analysis and design of three-layered Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavement systems incorporating a base layer have long been hampered by the scarcity of theoretically sound closed-form approaches. This study is focused on verifying and extending the Method of Transformed Sections (MTS), a closed-form approach derived in 1992 on the basis of dimensional analysis and engineering mechanics. The applicability of the MTS to the Dense Liquid (DL) and Elastic Solid (ES) foundations is studied in detail using a wide range of numerical test data for all three fundamental loading conditions (interior, edge and corner). Both unbonded and bonded interface conditions between the two Man-Made Layers (MML) are considered in the study. To make the analysis easier, the MTS is incorporated into computer program WESTERX, a compendium of closed-form solutions for two-and three -layered PCC pavements. Maximum responses (bending stresses, deflections and subgrade stresses) predicted by plate theory MTS are compared with those obtained from finite element computer program ILSL2X. Formulae developed to apply a compressibility correction to these responses are verified using results obtained from layer elastic analysis (computer program DIPLOMAT. Critical responses from plate theory MTS are presented in the form of dimension less charts, which can be used as an alternative to the closed-form approach with either the DL or the ES subgrade idealizations, for all three fundamental loading positions. Graphical solutions are also developed for maximum responses that account for the compressibility of the two MML under interior loading conditions, for both the DL and the ES foundations.

Book excerpt: One of the major problems in the evaluation of concrete pavement systems is the accurate determination of pavement parameters such as elastic modulus of concrete, subgrade modulus, and edge and joint stiffnesses. One of the ways to determine these parameters is by matching a measured deflection basin caused by a falling weight deflectometer (FWD) to an analytical deflection basin computed by using a set of estimated parameters. This could be a very time-consuming and costly process. In response to this need, the user-friendly and flexible computer program DBCONPAS (Data Base for CONcrete PAvement Systems) was developed. The DBCONPAS program uses a data base of analytical results generated by the FEACONS (Finite Element Analysis of CONcrete Slabs) program. The data base can be expanded and updated easily. The program is adaptable to computers of various sizes, such as micro, mini, and mainframe computers. This paper describes the program structure, the program algorithm, the basic information in the data base, and the prediction equations used. DBCONPAS was used also to analyze FWD data obtained from several concrete pavement test sites in Florida. DBCONPAS was demonstrated to be an effective tool for analysis of concrete pavements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is concerned with analytical and numerical procedures applied to multi-layered concrete pavement systems. In the first part of this Thesis, analytical solutions for interior and edge loading are presented. The Burmister analytical solution for interior loading of a multi-layered system is expanded to the more general case of systems in which each component may be treated as a Burmister layer, or as an elastic spring bed, or as a plate. This study is useful for comparison of different models of pavement systems. The proposed procedure is implemented in the FORTRAN code DIPLOMAT. An edge loading solution for two semi-infinite plates resting on a general, multi-component linear elastic foundation is also obtained. The solution is implemented in the FORTRAN code DIPLOMAT-E. Several particular cases are considered in detail. The second part of this Thesis focuses on finite element models for concrete pavement systems. Finite element formulations for higher order subgrade soil models are developed. The corporation of the subgrade models by Vlasov-Pasternak, by Kerr and by Zhemochkin-Sinitsyn-Shtaerman into a new version of the computer program ILLI-SLAB, code-named ILSL2, is described. A comparative study of these foundation models has been conducted. The effect of the size of the loaded area on the applicability of the conventional dense liquid model has been investigated. A formulation for finite element analysis of the Totsky model is also developed and incorporated into ILSL2. Thus, ILSL2 is capable of analyzing the effect of separation between and compressibility of constructed layers in a multi-layered concrete pavement system. A general formulation for the analysis of the effect of nonlinear temperature (or moisture) differentials on the stresses and deflections in concrete pavement systems is presented. The concept of "Equivalent Temperature Distributions" is explored for a multi-layered systems. It is anticipated that the results of this study will contribute toward the improvement of current mechanistic-based design procedures. Findings may be implemented in future "unified" or "limit state" design procedures. This study will also enhance current methods used in interpreting nondestructive testing deflection measurements from in situ multi-layered PCC pavements.

Book excerpt: A three-dimensional (3-D) finite element model for concrete pavements, called 3DPAVE, was developed in this study in order to analyze accurately the many complex and interacting factors which influence the support provided to a concrete pavement. Pavement support and finite element models for pavements were first briefly reviewed. Based on the review, the ABAQUS general-purpose finite element software was used to develop a powerful and versatile 3-D model to overcome many of the inherent limitations of 2-D finite element models. A careful analysis of ABAQUS' many element types, features and options was conducted to select the components which would produce a robust and efficient model. The 3DPAVE consistently outperformed the 2-D model in accuracy over wide ranges of inputs for a variety of problems during its development. 3DPAVE was validated by comparison with measured deflection, stress, and strain data for traffic loading and temperature variation from AASHO Road Test, the Arlington Road Test, and the Portland Cement Association's slab experiments. In every comparison with measured field data, 3DPAVE's calculated responses were found to be in very good agreement with the measured responses. Applications of 3DPAVE were made to explore many complicated effects and interactions in concrete pavements, including foundation support; base thickness, stiffness, and interface bond/friction; slab curling and warping due to temperature and moisture gradients; dowel and aggregate interlock load transfer action at joints; and improved support with a widened lane, widened base, or tied concrete shoulder.
