While the bottom portion is undergoing self-weight consolidation, sedimentation continues to take place at the top. However, the compression behavior of such deposits upon loading is not well understood.This book describes the compression behavior of ultra-soft soil upon additional load application. Various types of laboratory compression tests suitable for this type of soil are discussed, such as tests using small- and large-scale consolidometers, hydraulic Rowe cells under different drainage conditions, constant rate of loading and constant rate of strain tests. It also explains how to determine the transition point, which differentiates the two distinct behaviors between slurry state and soil state deformation. Methods to determine the compression indices and coefficients of consolidation at different stress ranges, which are required for the prediction of magnitude of settlement and time rate of settlement, are developed. An equation for predicting settlement of ultra-soft soil in both the slurry and soil stages is elaborated upon. These proposed methods of characterization or analyses — which are validated against published data, laboratory measurements and a case study — serve as useful tools for designing and constructing embankments and for carrying out land reclamation on ultra-soft soil.

In this work, we propose to develop a framework able to account for different types of uncertainties in a formal and logical manner, to incorporate all available sources of information, and to integrate the uncertainty in an estimate of the probability. In geotechnical engineering, current soil classification charts based on CPT data may not provide an accurate prediction of soil type, even though soil classification is an essential component in the design process. As a cheaper and faster alternative to sample retrieval and testing, field methods such as the cone penetration test (CPT) can be used. A probabilistic soil classification approach is proposed here to improve soil classification based on CPT. The proposed approach provides a simple and straightforward tool that allows updating the soil classification charts based on sitespecific data. In general, settlements can be the result of surface loads or variable soil deposits. In current practice, the analysis to determine settlements is deterministic. It assumes that the soil profile at a site is uniform from location to location, and only allows limited consideration of the variations of the material properties and initial conditions within soil layers in spite of the wide range of compositions, gradations, and water contents in natural soils. A Bayesian methodology is used to develop an unbiased probabilistic model that accurately predicts the settlements and accounts for all the prevailing uncertainties. The proposed probabilistic model is used to estimate the settlements of the foundation of a structure in the Venice Lagoon, Italy. The conditional probability (fragility) of exceeding a specified settlement threshold for a given vertical pressure is estimated. A predictive fragility and confidence intervals are developed with special attention given to the treatment and quantification of aleatory and epistemic uncertainties. Sensitivity and importance measures are computed to identify the key parameters and random variables in the model.

Clayey soil creates many problems to the Geotechnical Engineers primarily because of repeated change of moisture content. Normally, these soils increase in size and swell when they absorb water and reduce in size and shrink when they become dry. Volume change in soil leads to distortions in the form of settlement due to contraction as a result of dryness or in the form of expansion due to swelling as a result of the absorption of water. There may be the need for soil treatment to improve the engineering properties of such soil. Compacted bentonite is often used as a buffer materials and for radioactive waste disposal system. A good understanding of the hydro-mechanical behavior of clay soil is essential to ensure safe disposal. The present study reports the results on the effects of temperature on swelling pressure and compressibility characteristics of soil. In this study, two different type of soils were used. One of them was a bentonite (liquid limit = 139%) procured from Bikaner, Rajasthan another one was Rourkela local soil (liquid limit = 35%). A new oedometer was designed and developed in-house to carry out consolidation and swelling pressure tests at a higher temperature. Swelling pressures tests on compacted bentonite specimens of targeted dry density of 1.6 Mg/m3 were conducted under constant volume condition for the temperature range between 25 to 90 0C. Compressibility tests at various temperatures for both soils were conducted using distilled water as the saturating fluid. It observed that high temperature caused an increase in swelling pressure and compressibility index of bentonite soil. There is no effect of temperature on compressibility index of Rourkela local soil.

Fine-grained cohesive soils are typically responsible for the majority of site settlements through a time dependent process known as consolidation. For this reason, it is desirable to accurately determine the degree of consolidation, referred to in the report as soil compressibility, of the fine-grained layers impacted by loading. Soil compressibility is commonly determined from the Oedometer test; however, this test is time consuming, expensive, highly susceptible to soil disturbance, and represents a very small zone of the soil layer. An alternative method to estimate the compressibility would be correlations with index properties which can be performed for all soil layers at a low cost and with quick turnover. Other methods include in-situ testing techniques such as Standard Penetration Testing (SPT), Cone Penetration Testing (CPT), Dilatometer Testing (DMT), and Pressuremeter Testing (PMT). The CPT is the most ideal test as it is repeatable, continuous, and commonly used. For this reason, this study utilizes an empirical method to refine correlations to index properties for local soils and estimate the compressibility via CPT. It was found that compressibility can be accurately estimated via CPT for soils with relatively high activity and moisture content. Index test correlations, when refined for the local geology, performed better than the generic correlations. The results for both techniques are not accurate enough to completely replace better in-situ or laboratory tests. However, it is this authors opinion that accurate determination of preconsolidation pressure is more important for accurate settlement estimation than compressibility indices. If the preconsolidation pressure is well defined for the site, the small error in the compressibility indices will have a minimal impact on the overall estimation of settlement. Consequently, this study will recommend a refined model for preconsolidation pressure in the conclusion chapter.
