Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of the Chinese Characters Tun Chinese characters are records of a distant past. In stead of being hidden under the rubbish heaps of ruined palaces, like the Cuneiform Inscriptions, they have, millen nium after millennium, been passing in open day through the hands of scribes. Subject to the caprices of each genera tion of writers, they now present themselves to us in a vast variety of successive forms. Through these forms, if the inquisitive eye of science trace correctly the process of change, we may acquire a knowledge of the origin of Chinese writing, and the method pursued by the inventors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar for Component Combination in Chinese Characters A linguistic analysis of one aspect of the structure of Chinese characters is presented. The analysis is an extension into two dimensions of a general approach to one-dimensional language study Results of the analysis are in the form of a three level generative grammar. The first level formalizes restrictions governing the general complexity of well formed Chinese characters; the second level formalizes co-occurrence constraints among character components and the particular spatial arrangement of these com ponents in classes of characters; the third level constitutes a procedure for selecting actual components from a lexicon. Finally an evaluation of the grammar is presented, in terms of criteria used in evaluating natural language grammars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synoptical Studies in Chinese Character What little there was in native works of practical value to foreign students has been embodied in the present collection, and for the rest, it can hardly be expected that every comparison drawn will meet with general approval. At the same time, it must be borne in mind that all the characters in any group are not necessarily to be compared one with another, though an ele ment of sameness will be found always to pervade each group and frequently a whole series of such which have been placed intentionally in juxtaposition. Further, although this volume begins from the beginning and leaves the student on the threshold of written Chinese, yet a thorough analytical knowledge of all the characters here given will make future classification a compa ratively easy matter - and the bitterness of Chinese is past. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Analysis of Chinese Characters The author of the great Chinese English dictionary Mr. Giles, has not hesitated to express most trenchantly his contempt of etymology as it has been applied to Chinese Characters. He says that "Much of the etymology of the Shuo Wen is childish in the extreme", and that the phonetic principle of combination is the only one of which we can pretend to know anything. Notwithstanding the ridicule heaped upon it, scholars, like Chalmers, Chalfant, Wieger and others have continued to pursue the fascinating study of the origin of these symbols and have given us most interesting results. These results are so convincing that in the teaching of character writing we have unhesitatingly adopted the principle that the etymology of the earliest Chinese writers on the subject, childish though it may often be and fanciful, is yet superior to the numerous mnemonics that have been invented by foreign students to assist in the difficult task of memorizing the forms of a few thousand characters. The student of these pages may often consider the etymology suggested fanciful and the logic of the combinations far fetched but the following consideration should be borne in mind. They are the products of Chinese fancy and imagination and to some extent show the workings of the Chinese mind. Therefore they interest us who are students of Chinese thought. Moreover they often may only seem to be fanciful because we are ignorant of the ancient customs out of which they arise, or of the forms of the utensils of which they are pictures, or of the variations of pronunciation in the different dialects. If any oue of us were entrusted with the task of inventing written symbols for both concrete objects and abstract ideas it is doubtful if we would produce anything much less fanciful and we certainly could produce nothing of such rich historic interest, as certainly invests the 3000 most primitive characters. Writing Chinese characters is a task of memory. Modern pedagogy. insists on the value of logical or even fanciful links between ideas for fixing them in mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sen Ji Mon: One Thousand Chinese Characters of Constant Occurrence in Japanese Literature; A New and Practical Method for Students of Japanese There is a tendency perhaps, on the part of some students of Japanese, to underrate the importance of the study of Chinese characters. The literature of Japan abounds with these imported ideographs, and it need hardly be asserted that, without a knowledge of those in common use, the student is unable to read the ordinary works which are issued from the native press, unless it be with the assistance of his teacher. The acquisition, however, of a number of these common characters, sufficient for practical purposes, is by no means an easy task; and yet by taking advantage of the labours of students in China, much may be done to facilitate the study, or at least to render it less formidable than it has generally been supposed to be. "An outstanding introduction to reading classical Chinese. Van Norden does a wonderful job of clearly explaining the basics of classical Chinese, and he carefully takes the reader through beautifully chosen examples from the textual tradition. An invaluable work." —Michael Puett, Harvard University

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Structure of Chinese Characters Under 300 Primary Forms: After the Shwoh-Wan, 100, A. D., And the Phonetic Shwoh-Wan, 1833 To the majority of students of Chinese, whether they be natives or foreigners, eight or nine tenths of the characters in the language are nothing more than conventional signs, having no resemblance to the things, or natural association with the ideas, which they represent. The main object of this work is to point out the original resemblances of the characters to things, and explain the uses of their several parts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief Introduction to the Study of the Chinese Language The series of articles put together in this Handbook were originally published in the Chinese Recorder. They were carefully read and studied by the Committee on the Training of Missionaries appointed in 1914 by the China Continuation Committee and some modifications have been made at the suggestion of various members of that Committee. The members of this Committee recommend these articles to the missionary body, and especially to those in charge of Language Schools, for the use ofi missionaries entering upon their special course of preparation for work in China. This series of articles will make an excellent intro duction to the study of the Chinese language. While the lack of facilities for carrying out the suggestions in this Handbook will render it less useful to those studying independently than to those able to attend a Language School, yet the Committee would recommend the Hand book to the attention also of those unable to study in an organized school.
