Book excerpt: A damped single degree-of-freedom model was developed to represent the gross dynamic behavior of shallow buried reinforced concrete arches subjected to specified nonuniform pressure distributions. Structural parameter were developed for a generic structure based upon available information in the literature and first principal calculations. Values of maximum crown deflection, calculated from numerical integration of the differential equation of motion, were compared with similar results from field experiments. Results utilizing structural parameters selected on this basis of the recommendations in this study provide the best agreement. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of two parallel, correlated studies concerning the structural behavior of prefabricated soil-covered concrete arches. One study has been analytical in nature and the other experimental in nature. In the analytical work a computer code has been developed which employs an original finite element method for determining both static and dynamic responses of the soil-structure system of interest. Behavior beyond the linear range is provided for in the code. The code is quite general and should also be useful in analyzing a variety of other structures and the user's manual is present in Volume 2 of this report. The experimental work has consisted of laboratory tests on one-third scale models of the actual 18-foot-radius prototype arches. Both bare and soil-covered arches subjected to static as well as dynamic loads have been considered in the laboratory tests. The primary purpose of the experimental study has been to verify the solutions obtained from the computer code, so that the code can be used with maximum confidence for future studies of various parameters that are involved in the response of the arch. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The determination of the loads on and behavior of shallow-buried arch structures is complicated by the geometry of the arch and by existence if soil structures arches interaction effects. A common approach to the analysis of buried is to idealize the structure as a lumped parameter single degree of freedom (SDOF) system. The parameters which must be assumed for input into the SDOF model include a loading function and a structural resistance deflection relationship. The applied load on a buried arch due to overpressure at the ground surface includes a radial and a tangential component. The radial component can be measured experimentally; however, there seems to be no available transducers to measure the tangential component or interface friction. Two 1/12-scale model reinforced concrete arches were tested statically in a sand backfill. The arches were semicircular with an inside radius of 1 foot 9 inches and a thickness of 2 inches. One arch was covered with two layers of 1/32-inch-thick Teflon at the soil-structure interface to significantly reduce the interface friction, and the loading and behavior of the two arches were compared. Pretest finite element calculations were conducted to estimate the arch behavior. Based on both the experimental data and posttest calculations, it appears that interface friction on a shallow buried arch has an effect on its behavior, at least for the case of static loads. The load path at sections in the arch with a lower friction coefficient at the interface tended more toward pure compression than it did in the other arch. Keywords: Air blast simulation; Concrete structures; Hardened installation. (SDW).

Book excerpt: A study was made of the effectiveness of the surrounding soil in restraining the lateral movement of shallow-buried arches subjected to blast overpres ures from a nuclear explosion. The theory is developed for parabolic arches with circular or barrel arches included as a special case. It can be pplied equally well to arches oriented with their longitudinal axes perpendicular to or parallel to the direction of travel of the blast wave. The arch is considered to be buried near the surface of a semi-infinite soil mass. The depth of cover over the crown is limited to one-half of the arch span. The twohinged rather than the fixed arch is selected as representing more closely the shallow-buried rch structures used in full-scale nuclear tests to date. While these structures were not actually pinned at the arch abutments, their behavior under blast loading appears to resemble more closely the pinned th n the fixed case. he principal variables studied in the numerical examples include: (1) depth of cover, (2) overpressure loading, (3) arch material, and (4) arch span. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experimental and analytical studies indicate that the approximate conventional theory based on limit analysis is quite adequate to predict the static ultimate loads of the underreinforced arches. The dynamic ultimate loads for compression mode loading can also be predicated by approximate theory provided that an appropriate dynamic increase factor (based on the increase in material properties) is used. However, it is not clear whether a satisfactory approximate theory can be developed to predict the ultimate dynamic load carrying capacity of the arch, subjected to a concentrated dynamic load at the crown or anti symmetric concentrated dynamic loads at quarter points. The experimental and analytical investigations also indicate that the natural periods of the arches have a significant influence on the dynamic load-carrying capacity of the arches in the cases of a concentrated load at the crown and antisymmetric concentrated loads at quarter points. The mode of failure under both static and dynamic loads is quite ductile in these cases as compared to the compression mode loading.

Book excerpt: This research provides a method to rectify the discrepancy that arises in discrete loading of 2-D FE models of semi-flexible buried concrete arch bridge, culvert, and tunnel systems due to the plane-strain assumption. Rectification is accomplished by providing a correlation between the deflection of a beam-on-elastic-foundation analysis and a distribution length by which the load in 2-D analysis is reduced. Distribution lengths are derived using bending energy ratios. The correlation considers structural geometry, overburden height, and base soil stiffness. Reduction of the 2-D design load by the proposed distribution length results in shear forces and bending moments nearly equivalent to those obtained from 3-D analysis in the plane of discrete load application transverse to the structure. Less conservative results are also obtained for axial forces. These results are intended for use on structures that are four times the span in length, or longer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method of analysis for buried arches with footings was developed to predict their response to a nuclear airblast overpressure. The method of analysis was formulated by considering the arch ring as a discrete model consisting of a finite number of nodes (flexible joints) connected by rigid bars initially of equal length. The results of laboratory and field tests on 1/4.5- and 1/2-scale models, respectively, of an arch structure are compared with predictions made using the analysis. Arch internal loads, footing motions, and free-field motions are compared with those predicted by the analysis and compare favorably. The analytical technique was used to predict the response of the prototype structure to a 140-psi air overpressure loading resulting from the detonation of 10-kt, 100-kt, and 1-Mt weapons, to a 100-psi air overpressure for a 1-Mt weapon, and to the Operation Prairie Flat (500-ton TNT) 140-psi overpressure and the predicted response was compared with that assumed in designing the structure. The method of analysis developed is recommended whenever a significant cost savings can be realized because a number of structures are to be constructed or when local soil conditions make design by cruder methods uncertain.
