Book excerpt: This textbook aims to provide a clear understanding of the various tools of analysis and design for robust stability and performance of uncertain dynamic systems. In model-based control design and analysis, mathematical models can never completely represent the “real world” system that is being modeled, and thus it is imperative to incorporate and accommodate a level of uncertainty into the models. This book directly addresses these issues from a deterministic uncertainty viewpoint and focuses on the interval parameter characterization of uncertain systems. Various tools of analysis and design are presented in a consolidated manner. This volume fills a current gap in published works by explicitly addressing the subject of control of dynamic systems from linear state space framework, namely using a time-domain, matrix-theory based approach. This book also: Presents and formulates the robustness problem in a linear state space model framework. Illustrates various systems level methodologies with examples and applications drawn from aerospace, electrical and mechanical engineering. Provides connections between lyapunov-based matrix approach and the transfer function based polynomial approaches. Robust Control of Uncertain Dynamic Systems: A Linear State Space Approach is an ideal book for first year graduate students taking a course in robust control in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering.

This book was released on 2012-10-21 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of uncertainty in a system description has always been a critical issue in control. The main objective of Randomized Algorithms for Analysis and Control of Uncertain Systems, with Applications (Second Edition) is to introduce the reader to the fundamentals of probabilistic methods in the analysis and design of systems subject to deterministic and stochastic uncertainty. The approach propounded by this text guarantees a reduction in the computational complexity of classical control algorithms and in the conservativeness of standard robust control techniques. The second edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect recent research and new applications with chapters on statistical learning theory, sequential methods for control and the scenario approach being completely rewritten. Features: · self-contained treatment explaining Monte Carlo and Las Vegas randomized algorithms from their genesis in the principles of probability theory to their use for system analysis; · development of a novel paradigm for (convex and nonconvex) controller synthesis in the presence of uncertainty and in the context of randomized algorithms; · comprehensive treatment of multivariate sample generation techniques, including consideration of the difficulties involved in obtaining identically and independently distributed samples; · applications of randomized algorithms in various endeavours, such as PageRank computation for the Google Web search engine, unmanned aerial vehicle design (both new in the second edition), congestion control of high-speed communications networks and stability of quantized sampled-data systems. Randomized Algorithms for Analysis and Control of Uncertain Systems (second edition) is certain to interest academic researchers and graduate control students working in probabilistic, robust or optimal control methods and control engineers dealing with system uncertainties. The present book is a very timely contribution to the literature. I have no hesitation in asserting that it will remain a widely cited reference work for many years. M. Vidyasagar

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In practical control problems, many constraints have to be handled in order to design controllers which operate in a real environment. By combining results on robust control and saturating control, this book attempts to provide positive help for practical situations and, as one of the first books to merge the two control fields, it should generate considerable interest in scientific/acad emic circles. The ten chapters, which deal with stabilization and control of both linear and nonlinear systems, are each independent in their approach - some deal purely with theoretical results whilst others concentrate on ways in which the theory can be applied. The book's unity is secured by the desire to formulate control design requirements through constraints on input and model uncertainty description.

Book excerpt: The book addresses the control issues such as stability analysis, control synthesis and filter design of Markov jump systems with the above three types of TPs, and thus is mainly divided into three parts. Part I studies the Markov jump systems with partially unknown TPs. Different methodologies with different conservatism for the basic stability and stabilization problems are developed and compared. Then the problems of state estimation, the control of systems with time-varying delays, the case involved with both partially unknown TPs and uncertain TPs in a composite way are also tackled. Part II deals with the Markov jump systems with piecewise homogeneous TPs. Methodologies that can effectively handle control problems in the scenario are developed, including the one coping with the asynchronous switching phenomenon between the currently activated system mode and the controller/filter to be designed. Part III focuses on the Markov jump systems with memory TPs. The concept of σ-mean square stability is proposed such that the stability problem can be solved via a finite number of conditions. The systems involved with nonlinear dynamics (described via the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model) are also investigated. Numerical and practical examples are given to verify the effectiveness of the obtained theoretical results. Finally, some perspectives and future works are presented to conclude the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is an up-to-date presentation of the analysis and design of singular Markovian jump systems (SMJSs) in which the transition rate matrix of the underlying systems is generally uncertain, partially unknown and designed. The problems addressed include stability, stabilization, H∞ control and filtering, observer design, and adaptive control. applications of Markov process are investigated by using Lyapunov theory, linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), S-procedure and the stochastic Barbalat’s Lemma, among other techniques. Features of the book include: · study of the stability problem for SMJSs with general transition rate matrices (TRMs); · stabilization for SMJSs by TRM design, noise control, proportional-derivative and partially mode-dependent control, in terms of LMIs with and without equation constraints; · mode-dependent and mode-independent H∞ control solutions with development of a type of disordered controller; · observer-based controllers of SMJSs in which both the designed observer and controller are either mode-dependent or mode-independent; · consideration of robust H∞ filtering in terms of uncertain TRM or filter parameters leading to a method for totally mode-independent filtering · development of LMI-based conditions for a class of adaptive state feedback controllers with almost-certainly-bounded estimated error and almost-certainly-asymptotically-stable corres ponding closed-loop system states · applications of Markov process on singular systems with norm bounded uncertainties and time-varying delays Analysis and Design of Singular Markovian Jump Systems contains valuable reference material for academic researchers wishing to explore the area. The contents are also suitable for a one-semester graduate course.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of 34 papers presented by leading researchers at the International Workshop on Robust Control held in San Antonio, Texas in March 1991. The common theme tying these papers together is the analysis, synthesis, and design of control systems subject to various uncertainties. The papers describe the latest results in parametric understanding, H8 uncertainty, l1 optical control, and Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT). The book is the first to bring together all the diverse points of view addressing the robust control problem and should strongly influence development in the robust control field for years to come. For this reason, control theorists, engineers, and applied mathematicians should consider it a crucial acquisition for their libraries.

Book excerpt: When solving the control and design problems in aerospace and naval engi neering, energetics, economics, biology, etc., we need to know the state of investigated dynamic processes. The presence of inherent uncertainties in the description of these processes and of noises in measurement devices leads to the necessity to construct the estimators for corresponding dynamic systems. The estimators recover the required information about system state from mea surement data. An attempt to solve the estimation problems in an optimal way results in the formulation of different variational problems. The type and complexity of these variational problems depend on the process model, the model of uncertainties, and the estimation performance criterion. A solution of variational problem determines an optimal estimator. Howerever, there exist at least two reasons why we use nonoptimal esti mators. The first reason is that the numerical algorithms for solving the corresponding variational problems can be very difficult for numerical imple mentation. For example, the dimension of these algorithms can be very high.

Book excerpt: The functionality of modern structural, mechanical and electrical or electronic systems depends on their ability to perform under uncertain conditions. Consideration of uncertainties and their effect on system behavior is an essential and integral part of defining systems. In eleven chapters, leading experts present an overview of the current state of uncertainty modeling, analysis and design of large systems in four major areas: finite and boundary element methods (common structural analysis techniques), fatigue, stability analysis, and fault-tolerant systems. The content of this book is unique; it describes exciting research developments and challenges in emerging areas, and provide a sophisticated toolbox for tackling uncertainty modeling in real systems.

Control and?ltering of nonlinear systems are still open problems due to their complexity natures. These problem becomes more complex when the system's parameters are - certain. A common approach to designing a controller/?lter for an uncertain nonlinear system is to linearize the system about an operating point, and uses linear control theory to design a controller/?lter. This approach is successful when the operating point of the system is restricted to a certain region. H- ever, when a wide range operation of the system is required, this method may fail. ThisbookpresentsnewnovelmethodologiesfordesigningrobustH fuzzy? controllers and robustH fuzzy?lters for a class of uncertain fuzzy systems? (UFSs), uncertain fuzzy Markovian jump systems (UFMJSs), uncertain fuzzy singularly perturbed systems (UFSPSs) and uncertain fuzzy singularly p- turbed systems with Markovian jumps (UFSPS-MJs). These new meth- ologies provide a framework for designing robustH fuzzy controllers and? robustH fuzzy?lters for these classes of systems based on a Tagaki-Sugeno? (TS) fuzzy model. Solutions to the design problems are presented in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). To investigate the design problems, we?rst describe a class of uncertain nonlinear systems (UNSs), uncertain nonlinear Markovianjumpsystems(UNMJSs), uncertainnonlinearsingularlyperturbed systems(UNSPSs)anduncertainnonlinearsingularlyperturbedsystemswith Markovian jumps (UNSPS-MJs) by a TS fuzzy system with parametric - certainties and with/without Markovian jumps. Then, based on an LMI - proach, we develop a technique for designing robustH fuzzy controllers and? robustH fuzzy?lters such that a given prescribed performance index is? guaranteed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multivariable Feedback Control: Analysis and Design, Second Edition presents a rigorous, yet easily readable, introduction to the analysis and design of robust multivariable control systems. Focusing on practical feedback control and not on system theory in general, this book provides the reader with insights into the opportunities and limitations of feedback control. Taking into account the latest developments in the field, this fully revised and updated second edition: * features a new chapter devoted to the use of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs); * presents current results on fundamental performance limitations introduced by RHP-poles and RHP-zeros; * introduces updated material on the selection of controlled variables and self-optimizing control; * provides simple IMC tuning rules for PID control; * covers additional material including unstable plants, the feedback amplifier, the lower gain margin and a clear strategy for incorporating integral action into LQG control; * includes numerous worked examples, exercises and case studies, which make frequent use of Matlab and the new Robust Control toolbox. Multivariable Feedback Control: Analysis and Design, Second Edition is an excellent resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses studying multivariable control. It is also an invaluable tool for engineers who want to understand multivariable control, its limitations, and how it can be applied in practice. The analysis techniques and the material on control structure design should prove very useful in the new emerging area of systems biology. Reviews of the first edition: "Being rich in insights and practical tips on controller design, the book should also prove to be very beneficial to industrial control engineers, both as a reference book and as an educational tool." Applied Mechanics Reviews "In summary, this book can be strongly recommended not only as a basic text in multivariable control techniques for graduate and undergraduate students, but also as a valuable source of information for control engineers."
