Book excerpt: Composite Construction in Steel and Concrete IX The highly successful International Conference series on Composite Construction in Steel and Concrete is a major forum for researchers, practitioners, and engineers to share and discuss their research, practical experience and innovations related to composite constructions in steel and concrete. Composite Construction is a key consideration in the design of buildings and infrastructure. Significant advances in research and development have increased the knowledge of the structural performance of composite structures. Some areas are becoming well understood and implemented in the design practice, codes and standards worldwide, while others like, e.g., application of high-performance materials or dismountable and reusable composite members need further studies; trends that are reflected by the conference papers. The 62 contributions contained in this book cover a wide variety of topics, including composite beams, composite columns, composite decks, joints, shear connections, fire behavior, seismic behavior, fatigue and fracture, codification, composite bridges, innovative hybrid structures, numerical investigations and practical applications. The Papers are peer-reviewed by the Scientific Board and may be adapted based on the outcome of the discussions during the conference. This book therefore summarizes the state-of-the-art in composite construction worldwide, as presented at the 9th International Conference on Composite Construction in Steel and Concrete hosted by the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, University of Stuttgart, RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau and University of Luxembourg, representing the work of authors from 18 countries.

Book excerpt: The primary function of suspended flooring systems in multi-storey buildings is to support gravity loads, and transfer these loads to other structural members, such as beams, walls and columns. Moreover, they play a key role in the distribution of lateral loads into the structural system and through to the foundations. Lateral loads caused by earthquake accelerations and deformations generate in-plane shear actions on these floors acting as diaphragms. Floor diaphragms transfer these actions to the lateral load-resisting systems, which then transfer them to the ground. Consequently, providing a dependable load path from the diaphragm to the lateral load-resisting system is essential, and should be well designed and constructed, as should the structural integrity of the floor diaphragm itself. Flooring comprising in situ lightly reinforced concrete slabs cast onto and acting compositely with light metal decking, known simply as composite metal (steel) deck floors, is one of the most commonly used floor systems in multi-storey buildings in New Zealand and worldwide. This popularity is due to their cost-effectiveness, the speed and efficiency of construction, and their demonstrated robustness under severe fire and earthquake actions. There are many parameters that influence the seismic behaviour of composite slabs, and researchers have addressed different failure modes of composite floors subjected to in-plane shear forces. However, the influence of the orientation of decking ribs and decking anchorage to the supporting steel beams on the strength and stiffness of the diaphragm to lateral load-resisting system has not been studied, and this needs to be understood for reliable diaphragm design of composite floor systems. This study determined the seismic shear behaviour of composite slabs, focussing on the interaction between these slabs acting as diaphragms and the lateral load-resisting systems and made some comparisons between demand and design capacity while providing key material to enable further work in that area. The first part of this project was numerically based (linear and nonlinear time history analysis) to quantify the accuracy of currently proposed provisions for establishing the diaphragm design actions. This showed that the current method for determining the diaphragm interface design shear is reasonable, predicting actions corresponding to the 80% level of peak demand generated from the appropriate time history analyses. The second part involved experimental testing of representative diaphragm components, with nine tests undertaken. These involved ribs oriented either perpendicular or parallel to the supporting beams, and at pseudo-static and seismic dynamic rates of testing. Using a novel pure shear test rig, three end-anchorage details have been examined. In the first floor slab, the deck rib orientation was parallel to the supporting beam. For the second and the third floor slab configurations, the deck rib orientation was perpendicular to the supporting beam. The second floor slab used the standard end-anchorage details adopted in New Zealand, involving a solid rib of concrete surrounding the shear studs along the secondary beam. The third floor slab used the standard end-anchorage detail adopted in Europe, in which the decking continued over the secondary beam and the shear studs were welded through the decking. Three identical specimens of each detail were constructed and tested, the first monotonically and second and third cyclically. It was found that all three slabs had similar strength and stiffness, albeit with different failure modes. The first end-anchorage detail exhibited the most brittle behaviour, whereas the second specimen showed smoother post-peak behaviour and was the most ductile detail among the three. A comparison between the test results and existing design equations has been made and a new equation improved to define the ultimate and design shear strength of composite floor slab diaphragms.

Book excerpt: This guide is the definitive resource on the design and detailing of diaphragms in cast-in-place reinforced concrete buildings. The requirements in ACI 318-14 are clearly summarized in figures and tables for quick reference. Comprehensive methods are provided on how to (1) determine diaphragm thickness based on strength and serviceability requirements; (2) calculate in-plane and collector forces based on ASCE/SEI 7-16 requirements; (3) model and analyze diaphragms; (4) determine the required reinforcement based on two different types of common construction methods; and (5) economically detail the required reinforcement based on the latest ACI 318 requirements. A step-by-step design procedure is provided that can be used for buildings assigned to Seismic Design Categories A through F. Numerous design aids and worked-out examples illustrate the code requirements for low-, mid-, and high-rise buildings, including buildings with irregularities.

Book excerpt: Provides the latest AISI North American specifications for cold-formed steel design Hailed by professionals around the world as the definitive text on the design of cold-formed steel, this book provides descriptions of the construction and structural behavior of cold-formed steel members and connections from both theoretical and experimental points of view. Updated to reflect the 2016 AISI North American specification and 2015 North American framing standards, this all-new fifth edition offers readers a better understanding of the analysis and design of the thin-walled, cold-formed steel structures that have been widely used in building construction and other areas in recent years. Cold-Formed Steel Design, 5th Edition has been revised and reorganized to incorporate the Direct Strength Method. It discusses the reasons and justification for the various design provisions of the North American specification and framing design standards. It provides chapter coverage of: the types of steels and their most important mechanical properties; the fundamentals of buckling modes; commonly used terms; the design of flexural members, compression members and closed cylindrical tubes, and of beam–columns using ASD, LRFD, and LSD methods; shear diaphragms and shell roof structures; standard corrugated sheets; and more. Updated to the 2016 North American (AISI S100) design specification and 2015 North American (AISI S240) design standard Offers thorough coverage of ASD, LRFD, LSD, and DSM design methods Integrates DSM in the main body of design provisions Features a new section on Power-Actuated Fastener (PAF) Connections Provides new examples and explanations of design provisions Cold-Formed Steel Design, 5th Edition is not only instructive for students, but can serve as a major source of reference for structural engineers, researchers, architects, and construction managers.

Book excerpt: The constant need for cost-effective structural forms has led to the increasing use of composite construction, and a substantial amount of research effort is currently being spent in developing techniques for combining concrete and steel effectively. Significant economies in this form of construction have been observed, especially in bridges and building floors. Codes of Practice on composite construction are being revised in the UK and in Europe, in the light of the substantial amount of knowledge that has been generated in recent years. An International Conference organised by the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, University College, Cardiff, UK, with the specific objective of discussing all types of metal structures in an integrated way, provided a forum for the dissemination of new concepts and for reviewing developments; the expectations of the organisers have been amply justified and exceeded by the level of international response to the call for papers. This volume contains 17 papers on composite steel structures, presented at the Conference, many of which were by well-known experts in their respective fields.
