Book excerpt: Embankment construction projects on very soft soil often give rise to serious problems. This volume on geotechnics and soft soil engineering therefore treats all phases of the design and construction process exhaustively, from the first investigation step to the monitoring of constructed work. The book presents the development concepts necessary for the project stages and discusses in great detail construction methods, displacement estimations, stability analyses, monitoring, and various other aspects involved. Extensive attention is furthermore paid to the application of geosynthetics as a tool to improve the stability of soft soils and embankments. Including various tables and practical data for many geographical areas in the world, this reference volume is essential reading for engineers and researchers in geotechnical engineering, construction, and related disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear large deflection finite element analyses of a fabric reinforced embankment on muskeg were performed to predict fabric tension and the effect of fabric stiffness on embankment deflections. The predicted fabric tensions were compared with the results of a sliding block analysis, and show this simple analysis requires further correlation to develop its applicability. Predicted fabric tensions increase directly with embankment deflection and fabric stiffness. Construction live loads produce the greatest embankment deflections and fabric tensions. Time and temperature effects were not considered. For the fabric stiffnesses studied, the presence of fabric does not significantly affect embankment deflections predicted by the finite element model. The beneficial effects of fabric reinforcement noted in field installations may result from the fabric providing continuity to the real embankment that is assumed in all the finite element analyses.

Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to geotechnical engineers, highway designers, construction engineers, planners, and others interested in constructing or widening highway embankments on problem foundations. Information is presented on site investigation and testing and on the various construction alternatives that are available when a highway must cross a problem foundation site. Construction over problem soil areas requires extensive site investigations and comparative design analyses to evaluate alternatives. This report of the Transportation Research Board updates and expands synthesis 29, which was published in 1973. It discusses the treatments and construction procedures that can be used to construct highway embankments over areas of soil that would otherwise not support such embankments. It describes site investigations, design analyses, and the kinds of treatments currently being used, including where they are applicable and the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports a theoretical and experimental study of the behaviour of reinforced earth embankments on soft clay foundations. Previous work on the analysis, design and modelling of reinforced earth is reviewed. Attention is drawn to limit equilibrium slip circle analysis, which is commonly used for the design of reinforced earth embankments, and the problems associated with its use are explained. -- As an alternative design method plasticity analysis provides an acceptable stress discontinuity field for this situation, and allows the calculation of a lower bound to the bearing capacity of the foundation. A rupture mechanism is postulated on the basis of the stress field and the resulting pattern of displacements is developed. -- A series of reinforced and unreinforced model tests were performed in which sand embankments, founded on layers of soft kaolin (of different thickness), were surcharge loaded to collapse. The foundation deformation fields were measured using a radiographic technique. Collapse loads and reinforcement load distributions were also recorded. These experimental tests were mathematically modelled using the CRISP finite element program, and an investigation into the effect of the reinforcement stiffness on the composite behaviour of the model was carried out. Data from a full scale instrumented embankment is also presented. -- A comparison between the theoretically predicted collapse fields of deformation in the foundation and those measured experimentally is made, and the suitability of applying plasticity theory to the design of reinforced embankments is discussed. The influence of foundation depth and reinforcement stiffness on the bearing capacity of the clay layer, and the loads measured in the reinforcement, is noted and explained in the context of the theoretical plasticity approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A section of I-670 in Columbus, OH, constructed during 1997-1998, includes a 33 ft. (l0 m) high embankment over a deposit of very soft sludge. The design used geosynthetics for reinforcement of the embankment and wick drains to accelerate the consolidation in the sludge. Stage construction was used to allow consolidation of the sludge. To verify the design assumptions, a test embankment was completed in 1993. The performance of the test embankment provided the information for the design of the full scale embankment. This project provided the opportunity to demonstrate the application of research findings from the test embankment to actual design and construction. The objective was to demonstrate how research findings can be used in design and construction. This report shows (1) how the results of the test embankment were used in the design of the full-scale embankment and prediction of the embankment performance, (2) how observation of the embankment performance can be used as construction control and (3) how the results can be used in future application of similar technology.
