Book excerpt: Intracerebral injection of Theiler's murine encephalomyelitits virus (TMEV) into susceptible strains of mice induces a chronic and progressive immune-mediated demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that shares many clinical and histopathological features with human multiple sclerosis. Some mouse strains are resistant to this virus-induced disease, and the MHC class I-restricted CD8+ T cell response is thought to play an important role in viral clearance and protection from disease development in resistant mice. In contrast, susceptible strains have long been thought to be deficient in CD8+ T cell immunity against TMEV. Thus, we have carefully analyzed and compared the virus-specific CD8+ T cell responses in prototype resistant (C57B/6) and prototype susceptible (SJL/J) mouse strains.
