De faibles différences entre taux de croissance annuels peuvent conduire à la longue à d'importantes différences de niveaux de vie. Aussi au cours de la dernière décennie des recherches sur la croissance sont-elles réapparues, notamment des comparaisons entre pays sur les rapports entre la croissance et ses déterminants. C'est cette importante analyse et son exploitation statistique que l'on retrouvera dans cet ouvrage : Les facteurs de la croissance économique, qui reprend les Conférences en hommage à Lionel Robbins prononcées par Robert Barro en février 1996 à la London School of Economics. Cet ouvrage comprend trois essais. A partir d'un panel de données par pays, le premier essai est une recherche d'ensemble des déterminants de la croissance à long terme. Le second essai analyse les interfaces entre la croissance et la démocratie, et met à jour des relations non-linéaires. Pour de faibles niveaux de droits politiques, leur développement contribue à la croissance ; une fois la démocratie atteinte, l'extension de ces droits risque de compromettre la croissance. Le dernier de ces essais considère la relation entre l'inflation et la croissance économique. A l'inverse des théories récentes de la croissance endogène où le taux de croissance à long terme des économies est déterminé par les politiques gouvernementales et/ou d'autres facteurs déjà intégrés dans le modèle, ce travail s'appuie fondamentalement sur le modèle traditionnel néo-classique. Son principe, celui de convergence conditionnelle, trouve ici d'importantes confirmations ; à politique donnée, niveaux de départ de capital humain donné, et les autres variables constantes, la croissance des pays pauvres est supérieure à celle des pays riches.

Le premier est de réaliser une synthèse des recherches consacrées à la croissance, le second est de proposer, sur base des travaux antérieurs, un nouveau modèle causal de la croissance des entreprises, de développer des hypothèses de recherche sur base de ce dernier et de tester celle-ci sur un échantillon de P.M.E. belges afin d'identifier les principaux prédicteurs de leur croissance. Le premier chapitre résume les travaux des chercheurs et théoriciens ayant conduit à relativiser ou à remettre en cause la théorie néoclassique de la croissance. Le second chapitre présente un "état de l'art" des recherches récente sur la croissance et examine les différents courants théoriques auxquels elles peuvent être rattachées. Le troisième chapitre est consacré au développement d'un nouveau modèle causal de la croissance et à l'identification de l'ensemble des variables suceptibles d'influencer celle-ci. Ces variables appartiennent à quatre sous-groupes : les déterminants liés au dirigeant, les détereminants liés à l'entreprise, les déterminants stratégiques et les déterminants environnementaux. Une sous-section de ce chapitre examine la pertinence des critères utilisés pour conceptualiser la croissance et justifie l'utilisation de deux mesures de la croissance : l'évolution de l'emploi et celle du chiffre d'affaires. Le quatrième chapitre est consacré à la méthodologie. Le cinquième chapitre présente les résultats de l'étude empirique. Ceux-ci nous conduisent à revoir notre modèle causal théorique et à développer des modèles distincts de prédiction de la croissance du chiffre d'affaires et de l'emploi. Nos observations démontrent que ces critères ne peuvent pas être considérés comme des sonceptualisations interchangeables d'un même phénomène. Enfin, au niveau de l'ancrage theorique, nos résultats confirment la nécessité de dépasser les perspectives purement internes ou externes et plaident en faveur d'une approche du type "management stratégique", qui postule que la croissance est influencée par les ressources et l'environnement de la firme, ainsi que par les actions et décisions du dirigeant face aux modifications des conditions environnementales.
