Book excerpt: La matière organique naturelle (MON) est devenue aujourd’hui un critère primordial de la qualité des eaux potables. Le premier objectif de ces travaux a été d’évaluer les performances de matériaux particulaires vis-à-vis de l’élimination de la MON après clarification, puis l’action de polymères cationiques, associés ou non à un coagulant classique, a été investiguée ; l’association des deux types de réactifs a ensuite été réalisée. Le charbon actif (CA) ayant confirmé son potentiel d’élimination de la MON, et l’amélioration de la coagulation – floculation ayant montré des limites, les travaux se sont tournés vers l’utilisation de CA. Après comparaison des performances de plusieurs CA commerciaux vis-à-vis de la MON dissoute, les travaux ont porté sur le couplage d’une suspension de CA d’âge élevé avec une séparation par ultrafiltration. Différentes techniques analytiques ont été utilisées : analyses de COD, de CODB, d’UV, utilisation de chromatographie d’exclusion stérique.

S'appuyant sur un suivi analytique en 13 points de la Vienne, il a été montré que l'étude des corrélations bivariées permet la mise en évidence de perturbations du milieu par les rejets organiques. Diverses ACP ont permis de préciser avec une bonne objectivité l'état des eaux de la Vienne et leur évolution spatio-temporelle. Par ailleurs, la dispersion dans le plan ACP des individus représentatifs d'une même station peut être utilisée pour évaluer les perturbations liées aux apports anthropiques. Afin d'acquérir une meilleure connaissance de l'évolution de la MOD d'un cours d'eau, des investigations ont été menées sur l'étude des extraits de MO isolés à travers diverses techniques analytiques de caractérisation.

The Environmental Protection Agency's decision in the summer of 2001 to delay implementing a new, more stringent standard for the maximum allowable level for arsenic in drinking water generated a great deal of criticism and controversy. Ultimately at issue were newer data on arsenic beyond those that had been examined in a 1999 National Research Council report. EPA asked the National Research Council for an evaluation of the new data available. The committee's analyses and conclusions are presented in Arsenic in Drinking Water: 2001 Update. New epidemiological studies are critically evaluated, as are new experimental data that provide information on how and at what level arsenic in drinking water can lead to cancer. The report's findings are consistent with those of the 1999 report that found high risks of cancer at the previous federal standard of 50 parts per billion. In fact, the new report concludes that men and women who consume water containing 3 parts per billion of arsenic daily have about a 1 in 1,000 increased risk of developing bladder or lung cancer during their lifetime.
