Book excerpt: Notre objectif dans cette étude est l'étude des principaux déterminants des choix d'adhésion aux syndicats. Nous avons montré que la désyndicalisation, qu'ont connue les pays développés depuis 1970, est directement liée à la chute des effectifs ouvriers qui constituaient les principaux "bataillons" syndicaux. Les bouleversements structuraux peuvent ainsi avoir contribué à affaiblir les forces syndicales. Cependant, si la pertinence des explications structurelles semble non contestée dans certains pays comme la France où la désyndicalisation a coïncidé avec des transformations importantes, d'autres pays (Finlande, Danemark ou Suède par exemple) ont subi les mêmes changements sans générer des baisses considérables de leurs densités syndicales. D'où la nécessité de les compléter en centrant l'analyse non seulement sur les salariés comme vecteur explicatif mais en intégrant également tous les acteurs et les environnements qui peuvent, directement ou indirectement influer sur la présence, l'action et l'impact des syndicats.

Dans le cadre d'une telle démarche, la spécificité des syndicats français ainsi que l'ensemble de leurs activités: conventionnelle, sociale, politique... Doivent être bien pris en compte. Les pays anglo-saxons sont aujourd'hui le lieu d'un véritable regain d'intérêt pour l'analyse des syndicats. Ils nous fournissent a ce propos une véritable théorie des négociations syndicat employeur. Apres une étude approfondie de ces modèles ainsi qu'une analyse relative a la négociation collective française de la dernière décennies, il s'avère que cette théorie anglo-saxonne n'est pas a même de représenter l'ensemble de la fonction conventionnelle des syndicats. Ils ne rendent pas non plus compte de l'ensemble de leurs activités. L'étude montre qu'une représentation de type " institution politique" peut par contre pallier les différentes limites des modèles précédents. Le syndicat est alors considère comme une institution politique située a la fois sur le marche politique et sur le marche économique. Le modèle propose montre qu'une telle conception semble tout a fait adaptée au cas français et peut même fournir une explication dudeclin syndical.
