Book Synopsis Beheading the Saint by : Geneviève Zubrzycki
Download or read book Beheading the Saint written by Geneviève Zubrzycki and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The province of Quebec used to be called the priest-ridden province by its Protestant neighbors in Canada. During the 1960s, Quebec became radically secular, directly leading to its evolution as a welfare state with lay social services. What happened to cause this abrupt change? Genevieve Zubrzycki gives us an elegant and penetrating history, showing that a key incident sets up the transformation. Saint John the Baptist is the patron saint of French Canadians, and, until 1969, was subject of annual celebrations with a parade in Montreal. That year, the statue of St. John was toppled by protestors, breaking off the head from the body. Here, then is the proximate cause: the beheading of a saint, a symbolic death to be sure, which caused the parades to disappear and other modes of national celebration to take their place. The beheading of the saint was part and parcel of the so-called Quiet Revolution, a period of far-reaching social, economic, political, and cultural transformations. Quebec society and the identity of its French-speaking members drastically reinvented themselves with the rejection of Catholicism. Zubrzycki is already acknowledged as a leading authority on nationalism and religion; this book will significantly enlarge her stature by showing the extent to which a core feature of the Quiet Revolution was an aesthetic revolt. A new generation rejected the symbols of French Canada, redefining national identity in the process (and as a process) and providing momentum for institutional reforms. We learn that symbols have causal force, generating chains of significations which can transform a Catholic-dominated conservative society into a leftist, forward-looking, secular society."

Download or read book The Ideas and Influence of Alan Williams written by Anne Mason and published by Radcliffe Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BE REASONABLE: DO IT MY WAY! The sign on Alan Williams' desk revealed his sense of humour, a man who invited and relished debate, but always recognising that intellectual pursuits were a means to a practical end. Perhaps best known for his work within cost-benefit analysis, Alan Williams was a man of principles who developed guiding values in healthcare economics that embraced and encouraged active intellectual engagement and progression. He was concerned with the philosophical and ethical issues that underpin decision making and his courageous intellectual battles bore new ideas and revised ideology. This compilation of papers and further discussions arising from the Alan Williams tribute conference provides an analysis of the evolution and current status of key concepts in the field. It is highly recommended for health economics professionals and students.
Book Synopsis China, the Health Sector by : Dean T. Jamison
Download or read book China, the Health Sector written by Dean T. Jamison and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review of China's health sector begins by noting China's achievements in population control, health status, and nutrition. The policies, sources of financing, and resource use that have contributed to China's successes are cited, and the evolution of several influences on health from outside the sector are discussed, including nutritional improvements, greater access to clean water and sanitary waste disposal, and fertility reduction. Two major challenges now face China's health sector: (i) extending the methods that have been successful to areas where mortality rates and deaths due to infectious diseases remain high; and (ii) developing and implementing approaches to management of chronic disease that combine prevention, low-cost treatment, rehabilitation, and humane care. Major innovation will be essential because resources are limited and plans for meeting the health needs of the population are ambitious. Institutions capable of innovation, experimentation, and analysis of public health problems must be developed. The report includes discussion of specific issues in the sector.

Book Synopsis Ethnocentrism in Education by : Klaus Schleicher
Download or read book Ethnocentrism in Education written by Klaus Schleicher and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1992 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While we witness a dramatic revival of Ethnocentrism, particularly in the former socialist countries, the Global Interdependence is inexorably increasing in the face of internationalized high technology, stock-markets, pollution and migration. The comparative Reader analyses the educational implications of ethnocentrism from the perspective of different social sciences, with regard to its educational and social ramifications in four continents, and in the intention to balance ethnic identity and cultural diversity with social communication and cross-cultural cooperation. The reader encourages a Comparison at three levels: First of all, between research concepts, regional case studies and cross-cultural educational goals and means; second, between appearance, functions, and legitimacy of ethnocentrism in education; and thirdly, between the efficacy of subtle socialization procedures and the possibilities of formal education and educational policy.
