Book Synopsis Beheading the Saint by : Geneviève Zubrzycki
Download or read book Beheading the Saint written by Geneviève Zubrzycki and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The province of Quebec used to be called the priest-ridden province by its Protestant neighbors in Canada. During the 1960s, Quebec became radically secular, directly leading to its evolution as a welfare state with lay social services. What happened to cause this abrupt change? Genevieve Zubrzycki gives us an elegant and penetrating history, showing that a key incident sets up the transformation. Saint John the Baptist is the patron saint of French Canadians, and, until 1969, was subject of annual celebrations with a parade in Montreal. That year, the statue of St. John was toppled by protestors, breaking off the head from the body. Here, then is the proximate cause: the beheading of a saint, a symbolic death to be sure, which caused the parades to disappear and other modes of national celebration to take their place. The beheading of the saint was part and parcel of the so-called Quiet Revolution, a period of far-reaching social, economic, political, and cultural transformations. Quebec society and the identity of its French-speaking members drastically reinvented themselves with the rejection of Catholicism. Zubrzycki is already acknowledged as a leading authority on nationalism and religion; this book will significantly enlarge her stature by showing the extent to which a core feature of the Quiet Revolution was an aesthetic revolt. A new generation rejected the symbols of French Canada, redefining national identity in the process (and as a process) and providing momentum for institutional reforms. We learn that symbols have causal force, generating chains of significations which can transform a Catholic-dominated conservative society into a leftist, forward-looking, secular society."

It is highly recommended for health economics professionals and students.
Book Synopsis China, the Health Sector by : Dean T. Jamison
Download or read book China, the Health Sector written by Dean T. Jamison and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review of China's health sector begins by noting China's achievements in population control, health status, and nutrition. The policies, sources of financing, and resource use that have contributed to China's successes are cited, and the evolution of several influences on health from outside the sector are discussed, including nutritional improvements, greater access to clean water and sanitary waste disposal, and fertility reduction. Two major challenges now face China's health sector: (i) extending the methods that have been successful to areas where mortality rates and deaths due to infectious diseases remain high; and (ii) developing and implementing approaches to management of chronic disease that combine prevention, low-cost treatment, rehabilitation, and humane care. Major innovation will be essential because resources are limited and plans for meeting the health needs of the population are ambitious. Institutions capable of innovation, experimentation, and analysis of public health problems must be developed. The report includes discussion of specific issues in the sector.

Book Synopsis Practical Considerations for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage by : Michelle L. Stefano
Download or read book Practical Considerations for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage written by Michelle L. Stefano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-23 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical Considerations for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage examines theoretical issues relating to intangible cultural heritage policy and practice, whilst also proposing practical ways to facilitate the safeguarding of such heritage. Providing guidelines for best practice that take into account the constraints of the UNESCO-ICH paradigm, Stefano examines the principles and practices of two alternative and largely non-UNESCO frameworks for sustaining living cultural traditions: the philosophy of ecomuseology, and the discipline of public folklore in the context of the U.S. Arguing that they offer more collaborative, equitable, and effective ways forward for safeguarding ICH, Stefano demonstrates how they can address the limitations of the UNESCO-ICH paradigm. Importantly, the book offers a personal perspective, grounded in the author’s public sector work, which allows the ICH discourse to move beyond critical analysis and explore realistic, alternative ways in which ICH can be collaboratively and equitably safeguarded. Practical Considerations for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage proposes guidelines for professionals, researchers, and communities that foster safeguarding approaches that are as unique and nuanced as ICH expressions themselves. The interdisciplinary nature of the book will ensure that it is useful to those interested in community-led ICH safeguarding, as well as the impacts of UNESCO’s 2003 Convention, in diverse geographic, political, economic, and sociocultural contexts.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While we witness a dramatic revival of Ethnocentrism, particularly in the former socialist countries, the Global Interdependence is inexorably increasing in the face of internationalized high technology, stock-markets, pollution and migration. The comparative Reader analyses the educational implications of ethnocentrism from the perspective of different social sciences, with regard to its educational and social ramifications in four continents, and in the intention to balance ethnic identity and cultural diversity with social communication and cross-cultural cooperation. The reader encourages a Comparison at three levels: First of all, between research concepts, regional case studies and cross-cultural educational goals and means; second, between appearance, functions, and legitimacy of ethnocentrism in education; and thirdly, between the efficacy of subtle socialization procedures and the possibilities of formal education and educational policy.
