Book excerpt: El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo principal evaluar desde un punto de vista técnico, económico y ambiental las diferentes tecnologías de Saneamiento Sostenible para aplicar el conocimiento adquirido en el caso práctico de una casa rural en el sur de España. Primero se han analizado de manera teórica las tecnologías de Saneamiento Sostenible más importantes actualmente clasificadas según el tipo de residuo que recolectan y tratan. Se han estudiado las tecnologías pro-pias de los sistemas que además de ser viables tecnológica y económicamente también protegen los recursos naturales y el medio ambiente, como son el alcantarillado por gravedad, el alcantarillado por vacío, los sanitarios de separación de sólido líquido, el retrete seco, la recolección y tratamiento naturales de las aguas grises, la captación de agua de lluvia, el compostaje de materia orgánica y los tratamiento anaeróbicos. Se han estudiado cuatro casos reales de aplicación de sistemas de Saneamiento Sostenible. Para la elección de estos casos se ha considerado que fueran representativos de las tecnologías de saneamiento sostenible más utilizadas. Se ha estudiado el caso de un sanitario seco con separación de orina, el de la construcción de un humedal artificial para el tratamiento de agua residual, el de una planta de generación de biogás a partir de desechos humanos y el de un sistema de compostaje de lodos fecales y residuos sólidos urbanos. Teniendo en cuenta el conocimiento adquirido se ha desarrollado una propuesta de implantación de un sistema completo de Saneamiento Sostenible en una casa rural en una aldea de Huelva. El propósito de la incorporación de este tipo de sistemas en la casa es el de disminuir la contaminación de los suelos de la zona y mejorar la calidad de vida de la familia. El sistema de Saneamiento Sostenible elegido para implantar en la casa del estudio ha sido un baño seco con recolección de orina y un humedal artificial para la recolección y tratamiento de aguas residuales. Se ha realizado un estudio económico de la propuesta de saneamiento desarrollada comparándola con otras dos alternativas, una fosa séptica con zanjas filtrantes y una conducción de agua hasta el alcantarillado municipal. Se ha considerado tanto la evaluación de los costes como de los beneficios de la construcción de los sistemas de saneamiento. Se ha llevado a cabo un Análisis de Ciclo de Vida para evaluar los impactos ambientales asociados a la construcción del sistema de saneamiento propuesto. Esto se ha realizado mediante la identificación y cuantificación de la energía y los materiales usados, en la construcción de nuestra propuesta y de las dos alternativas, con el fin de analizar los impactos de estos sobre el medio ambiente, evaluarlos e implementar posibles mejo-ras. Para obtener los resultados del análisis del impacto se ha utilizado el software SimaPro, el cual compara y analiza los datos introducidos descomponiéndolos en todos sus materiales y procesos. Posteriormente se han analizado los resultados obtenidos para las categorías de impacto siguientes: el agotamiento abiótico, la acidificación, la eutrofización, el calentamiento global y el agotamiento de la capa de ozono. Obteniendo como resultado que en el escenario de la conducción de agua el impacto es en todas las categorías significativamente mayor que el obtenido en los otros escenarios. Los valores obtenidos para los escenarios del humedal + UDDT y para la fosa séptica + zanjas filtrantes son muy parecidos en todas las categorías.

Una de las alternativas que se ha venido desarrollando con mayor fuerza en el sector para reducir estas afectaciones, es la recirculación directa o indirecta de efluentes líquidos, principalmente de las actividades o procesos que los generan y que representan mayores consumos y mayor contaminación, tal es el caso de pelambre y curtido. Estas actividades, además de consumir una cantidad considerable de agua, generan efluentes con una carga contaminante alta, y a la vez contienen productos para el proceso que se pierden como residuo, tales como cal, sulfuro (para el caso de pelambre) y cromo (para el caso de curtido). No obstante, existen otras alternativas que permiten un mejoramiento ambiental de la actividad pero que pueden no ser efectivas a la hora de evaluar la calidad del producto final (cuero). Por lo tanto, en el presente trabajo se pretende hacer un análisis técnico y económico en las alternativas de producción más limpia utilizadas con mayor frecuencia en las tenerías, identificando los beneficios ambientales que se obtienen, así como los beneficios en costos de producción, puesto que se reducen los consumos de agua y de insumos nuevos generándose ahorros para el empresario.

During development the model has been successfully tested on a range of systems from full-scale waste sludge digestion to laboratory-scale thermophilic high-rate UASB reactors. The model structure is presented in a readily applicable matrix format for implementation in many available differential equation solvers. It is expected that the model will be available as part of commercial wastewater simulation packages. The ASM1 can be considered as the reference model, since this model triggered the general acceptance of wastewater treatment modelling, first in the research community and later on also in practice. ASM1 has become a reference for many scientific and practical projects, and has been implemented (in some cases with modifications) in most of the commercial software available for modelling and simulation of plants for N removal. The models have grown more complex over the years, from ASM1, including N removal processes, to ASM2 (and its variations) including P removal processes, and ASM3 that corrects the deficiencies of ASM1 and is based on a metabolic approach to modelling. So far, ASM1 is the most widely applied. Applications of Activated Sludge Models has been prepared in celebration of 25 years of ASM1 and in tribute to the activated sludge modelling pioneer, the late Professor G.v.R. Marrais. It consists of a dozen of practical applications for ASM models to model development, plant optimization, extension, upgrade, retrofit and troubleshooting, carried out by the members of the Delft modelling group over the last two decades.

Practitioners from around the world shared their models of good practice and explored the challenges involved in engaging people in sustainability. The difficulties facing practitioners vary between country and context but some challenges are universal: A lack of clarity in communicating what is meant by sustainable development; An ambition to educate everyone to bring about a global citizenship; Social, organisational or institutional factors constrain change to sustainable development, yet there is an emphasis on formal education, and community educators do not receive the same support; A lack of balance in addressing the integration of environmental, social and economic dimensions leading to an interpretation that ESD is mainly about environment and conservation issues; New learning (rather than teaching) approaches are called for to promote more debate in society. Yet, few are trained or experienced in these new approaches. Practitioners need support to explore new ways of promoting learning. [Foreword, ed].
