Book excerpt: This volume is the outcome of collaborative European research among archaeologists, archaeobotanists, ethnographers, historians and agronomists, and frequently uses experiments in archaeology. It aims to establish new common ground for integrating different approaches and for viewing agriculture from the standpoint of the human actors involved. Each chapter provides an interdisciplinary overview of the skills used and the social context of the pursuit of agriculture, highlighting examples of tools, technologies and processes from land clearance to cereal processing and food preparation. This is the second of three volumes in the EARTH monograph series, The dynamics of non-industrial agriculture: 8,000 years of resilience and innovation , which shows the great variety of agricultural practices in human terms, in their social, political, cultural and legal contexts.

Book excerpt: This book examines an important type of Spanish-American essay--one that deals with the problems of a developing civilization--and places its focus on the history of ideas rather than on literature per se, pointing up the hemispheric pattern of intellectual development in most of the major Spanish-American countries and revealing a general pattern in cultural development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A universal test of great writers is the quality of their response to the human dilemma. Prophet in the Wilderness traces the development of that response in the works of the Argentine writer Ezequiel Martínez Estrada, from the first ambitious poems to its definitive expression in the essays and short stories. His theme is progressive disillusionment, in history and in personal experience, both of which are interpreted in his work as accumulations of error. Modern civilization, he believes, has created many more problems than it has solved. Like Schopenhauer, Freud, and Spengler, the three thinkers who influenced him most, Martínez Estrada found in real events and circumstances all the symbols of disenchantment. Many today have begun to share this disenchantment, for since the publication of X-Ray of the Pampa in 1933 the real world has become more and more like his symbolic world. Prophet in the Wilderness examines Martínez Estrada's foremost concern: the world as a complex reality to be discovered behind the image of one's own most intimate community. For him, the community assumed many forms: Buenos Aires, the enigmatic metropolis; the cathedral in his story "The Deluge"; the innumerable family of Marta Riquelme; Argentina itself in his masterpiece, X-Ray of the Pampa. Martínez Estrada is the great solitary of Hispanic American literature, independent of all fashions and trends. With Borges, he had become by 1950 one of the two most discussed writers in Argentina.

Book excerpt: This book is designed to act as a readily accessible guide to different methods and techniques of use-wear and residue analysis and therefore includes a wide range of different and complementary essential topics: experimental tests, observation and record methods and techniques and the interpretation of a diversity of tool types and worked raw materials. The onset of use-wear studies was marked by the development of theory, method and techniques in order to infer prehistoric tools functionality and, therefore, understand human technological, social and cultural behavior. The last decade of functional studies, use-wear and residue analysis have been aimed at the observation, recording and interpretation of different activities and worked materials found on archaeological tools made on different types of organic and non-organic materials. This international group of contributions will be fundamental for all researchers and students of the discipline.

Book excerpt: This book considers the relationship between the humanities and the sciences in a Latin American context. The geographical emphasis is important, given the prominent role of science in the formation of the region's nation-states and its strong presence in Latin American cultural output. Most of the chapters focus on fictional narratives and scientific discourses. Questions of consent, resistance, and ideology in both fields are considered. The historical study of interplay between science and the novel helps identify what people were expected to believe at a given time, and reveals how these beliefs were sustained. This book provides insight into the connection between individual self-understanding and the surrounding world of science, within the broader question of the place of science in Latin American culture.Chapters include:• Darwin in South America: Geology, Imagination and Encounter•Walking Backward to the Future: Time, Travel and Race• Natural Parts and Unnatural Others: A reflection on Patrimony at the Turn of the 19th Century• On the Transition from Realism to the Fantastic in the Argentina of the 1870s: Holmberg and the Six of Córdoba• Literature and Science in Martinez Estrada's Work• The Nature Effect in Latin American Science Publications: The Case of the Journal Redes•Two Scientific Traditions in Martín Fierro• Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle in Contemporary Spanish American Fiction• Constructing Postcoloniality: Scientific Enquiries in Cien Años de Soledad• Holograms and Simulacra: Bioy Casares, Subiela, Piglia• The Desert Poetics of Mario Montalbetti: Writing, Knowledge, Topologies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conservation and management of cultural landscapes, interpreted as the result of the interrelationships among economic, social and environmental factors through time and space, emerges as essential components in the definition and application of a modern approach to sustainable development. Cultural landscapes are the result of management practices and knowledge accumulated in human history and contribute not only to the cultural heritage of the world, but also to biodiversity and aesthetic beauty, providing also multiple goods and services for the development of rural areas. However, landscapes are severely endangered not only by some effects of the socioeconomic development, but also by inappropriate policies in agriculture, forestry and nature conservation. This interdisciplinary book presents a range of different methods developed to analyse, restore and manage cultural landscapes, reporting a number of case studies from Europe and north America, but raising some questions about the need for a revision of some past orientations.
