Individual chapters profile policies and programs in 29 countries. Each chapter contains a description of existing policies and programs, presented against a particular historical, cultural, and ideological backdrop. The chapters are arranged in alphabetical order to facilitate use as a reference, and each includes a list of works for further reading. The volume begins with an introductory essay that overviews recent trends and developments around the world. The chapters that follow discuss the background and history of child care, demographic characteristics of the country profiled, the socioeconomic context of child care, and the extent and nature of government intervention. A final chapter synthesizes the information presented and makes crossnational comparisons of policies and programs. Appendices provide demographic data and describe maternity and parental leave policies. A general bibliography concludes the work, making it a useful and current reference tool.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1990s, 'protection', 'import substitution' and 'intervention' have become dirty words, part of the 'leyenda negra' of Latin America development in the postwar period. This book attempts a fresh look at the controversial years between the end of the Second World War and the point when, at varying dates in different countries, a discontinuity occurs in which the postwar 'style of development' ceased to play a central role in the economic evolution of the region. The analysis is based on seven case studies covering eleven countries.
Book Synopsis Labor Markets in an Era of Adjustment: Case studies by : Susan Horton

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Bank Discussion Paper 245. Experience shows that literacy levels are much more easily raised in children than in adults. Literacy is not easily transmitted to adults, and skills of neoliterates are not stable--a problem which can lower the effectiveness rate of literacy projects to as little as 12 or 15 percent. The World Bank now rarely funds these projects, but it is seeking a new strategy for meeting the challenges presented by adult literacy. To find causes for the low effectiveness of programs, a Bank team conducted two literature reviews on literacy in general and on the cognitive correlations of age and performance. The editor presents their findings, pointing to the major obstacles to and determinants of adult literacy, and suggests effective instructional methods. The team also emphasizes the need for more research on the subject.

Miola's edited work also features a comprehensive critical history, coupled with a full bibliography and photographs of major productions of the play from around the world. In the collection, there are five previously unpublished essays. The topics covered in these new essays are women in the play, the play's debt to contemporary theater, its critical and performance histories in Germany and Japan, the metrical variety of the play, and the distinctly modern perspective on the play as containing dark and disturbing elements. To compliment these new essays, the collection features significant scholarship and commentary on The Comedy of Errors that is published in obscure and difficulty accessible journals, newspapers, and other sources. This collection brings together these essays for the first time.
