Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a need to study the anaerobic filter treatment of septic tank effluent, since no such study has been carried out in Canada and this type of treatment offered promise based on a literature review. The objectives of the study were to: 1) evaluate the performance of anaerobic filters operating at 5@c and 10@c, treating septic tank effluent; 2) compare their performance with the anaerobic filter operating at 21@c; 3) examine the relative impacts of accelerated start-up (using seed sludge and operating at approximately 35@c initially) and start-up using approximately field situation (21@c) on start-up period and process performance; and 4) examine the suitability of the system and start-up procedures, for applicability under low temperature situations including locations in northern Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 30 years have seen the emergence of a growing desire worldwide that positive actions be taken to restore and protect the environment from the degrading effects of all forms of pollution – air, water, soil, and noise. Since pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste production, the seemingly idealistic demand for “zero discharge” can be construed as an unrealistic demand for zero waste. However, as long as waste continues to exist, we can only attempt to abate the subsequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. Three major questions usually arise when a particular type of pollution has been identi ed: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it available? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? This book is one of the volumes of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering series. The principal intention of this series is to help readers formulate answers to the above three questions. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to speci c pollution problems has been a major contributing factor to the success of environmental engineering, and has accounted in large measure for the establishment of a “methodology of pollution control. ” However, the realization of the ever-increasing complexity and interrelated nature of current environmental problems renders it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems be undertaken.

Book excerpt: The quality of water, whether it is used for drinking, irrigation or recreational purposes, is significant for health in both developing and developed countries worldwide. This book is based on a programme of work undertaken by an international group of experts during 1999-2001. The aim was to develop a harmonised framework of effective and affordable guidelines and standards to improve the risk assessment and management of water-related microbial hazards. This book will be useful to all those concerned with issues relating to microbial water quality and health, including environmental and public health scientists, water scientists, policy makers and those responsible for developing standards and regulations.
Book Synopsis Septic Tank Effluent Treatment Using an Anaerobic Filter by : Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
Download or read book Septic Tank Effluent Treatment Using an Anaerobic Filter written by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews the literature on experimental studies on anaerobic filter treatment of septic tank effluent. The suitability of such a treatment for Canadian conditions is assessed and a conceptual system for use with some cost information is presented. This study indicates that septic tank effluent treatment using an anaerobic filter is practical and generally cost-effective for achieving a much better quality effluent.
