Book excerpt: In this memoir, Alice Hardesty tells the story of her husband Jack's extraordinary healing from esophageal cancer in the 1980s, despite two "terminal" diagnoses. After conventional medicine failed to provide a cure, Jack tried every alternative and complementary treatment he could, including nutrition, acupressure and other kinds of bodywork, vitamins and enzymes, spiritual healing, and intensive psychotherapy. Alice accompanied and supported him throughout this journey, and found that, along with the physical healing, came the healing of their marriage. PRAISE FOR AN UNCOMMON CANCER JOURNEY In this emotionally honest memoir, Alice Hardesty writes about the two successive terminal diagnoses that her husband survived and the wide range of therapies tried.... Just as it helps to read about what other travelers, pilgrims, or explorers encounter when venturing into the unknown, so it can for those who find themselves on a cancer journey. -Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D., Jungian Analyst and Author, Close to the Bone: Cancer as a Soul Journey My experience and my belief is that cancer often is a "soul event." Alice Hardesty's book offers us such a good example of how that looks in real life. ... Her story is compelling, illustrating what extraordinary experiences ordinary people can have. -Jan Adrian, Executive Director of Healing Journeys An Uncommon Cancer Journey is an unusual memoir about a subject that has been written about quite often. What makes it unique is not only the outcome for the author's very sick husband, but the journey through which they both travel-from conventional medicine to alternative treatment, to even more far-out alternative treatment.... This story is written with such remarkable clarity and honesty that readers will accept, and perhaps even want to pursue, roads to healing that are open to the truly open-minded. -Judith Barrington, Poet, Memoirist, Author Writing the Memoir: From Truth to Art Alice Hardesty makes it very clear thatanyone on a cancer journey-patientsor family caregivers-cannot remain unchanged.... This book is theauthor's unflinchingly honest personal story of herhusband'sdiagnosis, their search for treatments, his recovery from a deadly illness, and both of their healing. ...people even withthe worstkinds of cancercanbe cured, sometimes in non-traditional ways; anda crushing blow offate-"a cosmic kick"-can bring unexpected and profound gifts. -Ruth Bolletino, Ph.D., Co-Director of Cancer as a Turning Point-Mind-Body Psychotherapy and Counseling Author, How to Talk with Family Caregivers about Cancer"

Book excerpt: Patricia's world turned upside down when she was accidentally diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma (LMS), an extremely rare cancer affecting only 1 in 5 million people. LMS is also a very aggressive type of tumor, thus nicknamed the Purple Dragon. After the initial shock of the diagnosis subsided, Patricia was ready to discover ways to heal herself and find hope. She went from being a counselor to thousands of patients on how to be proactive and take charge of their own health, to taking unknown paths in search of hope for surviving a disease that does not have a single established medical treatment. She embarked on a spiritual journey, which took her to Omega Institute, Bali and Brazil, where she met healers, a guru, a physician and other extraordinary people who became instrumental in her finding peace within and starting to believe that everything can be healed, even the Purple Dragon. Born in Brazil, Patricia moved to the United States at age 20. She has a Master of Nutrition Science from the University of California, Davis, and has worked as a university professor, researcher, speaker, clinical dietitian and diabetes educator. She is also the proud mother of three children (including an angel in heaven) and the founder of Helping Children Heal (HCH), an NGO that provides medical treatment for impoverished and sick children who don't have health care. Patricia is a world traveler, having backpacked solo in Tibet, Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Namibia, India and many other countries. Above all she is a proactive woman who has been inspiring many as she travels the paths of healing and discoveries, keeping alive the flame of faith that even the Purple Dragon can be tamed.

Book excerpt: This true story is one of amazing strength by a mother and daughter team as they undertake a three-and-a-half-year journey of battling Ewing's sarcoma, a rare bone and soft tissue cancer that usually affects children and young adults. During Tara's senior year of high school, when she was just 18 years old, she went in for what she thought would be a routine surgery to remove a lump above her right breast. She honestly never thought it could have been cancer! Tara refused conventional treatments in the beginning, to investigate natural remedies instead. She sought out the help from many natural and holistic practitioners. Together, Tara and her mom learned so much about the holistic ways of shopping, eating, and living. Their days were spent doing natural treatments and getting educated on what the body needs to be healthy. Then, the unthinkable happens. Tara's cancer turns aggressive and she must undergo emergency radiation to save her life. Despite having to switch gears and now undergo a full-blown conventional regimen, Tara regains her strength and spirit with keeping to her natural way of living. As the story unfolds, details of their journey are explained through Laura, the mother's point of view. Our lives are filled with numerous challenges, and how we choose to deal with them makes all the difference. Our choices are what defines the quality of our lives, and this includes our choice of treatment. This book shares a few surprises and a beautiful love story that only happens in fairy tales. Remember, it is not in the destination, but in our journeys where we grow our soul.

As Hodges details the moments before, during, and after her diagnosis, she shares a glimpse into how quickly life can change in an instant. Determined to put one foot in front of the other and courageously face whatever came her way, Hodges reveals how she coped with her disease by maintaining a positive attitude, refusing to let hopelessness prevail, and steadfastly believing there was a reason for everything that occurs in life. As she moved through treatments, Hodges details her subsequent spiritual journey where she learned to trust in the Lord and appreciate the inevitability of God's plan in every phase of her life. In this inspirational memoir, a multiple myeloma cancer survivor shares the personal story of her courageous battle with a terminal disease and how she learned to rely on God's wisdom for strength.

Despite the prognosis of “maybe a couple of years,” she achieved remission after radiation treatment. But re-entering the world post-cancer was not the victorious, blasted-confetti-across-the-stage feeling she expected. Yearning for the days when she could fall asleep without a cocktail of antidepressants and anxiety meds, as well as the community of cheerleaders who had rallied around her, LeeAnn looked to start her life over. But how? This is not LeeAnn Tripp’s life story, but a significant story from her life. She has been blessed with the gift of time to reflect and share the lessons learned along the way. Herein lies the purpose for this short memoir: to share her unexpected cancer survival journey and, in doing so, provide hope for those who feel abandoned, restore sanity to the ones who feel confused or spinning, and, if successful, inspire a path to finding the rainbow after the storm. About the Author LeeAnn Tripp is a Pittsburgh native and married mother of two. In 2014, she was diagnosed with a rare diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, a vicious brain tumor located in the brain stem. After successfully completing thirty-six rounds of radiation treatment, her prognosis has extended to nine plus years. She continues to enjoy good health, fueled by creative work, passionate living, regular jogs, strong faith, and the love of her friends and family. She resides in Central Pennsylvania. While she has previously published articles in academic journals, this is her first published book.

Book excerpt: In February of 2009 the author heard five of the most terrifying words in the English language, "Mr. Metzler, you have cancer." Mike was given a 50/50 chance of surviving for five years, even with being treated with chemotherapy and radiation. That diagnosis started what would become two journeys in Cancer World, a physical and psychological place unwillingly inhabited by cancer patients, their caregivers, families, and friends. The first journey was that of a patient being successfully treated for Stage 4 head and neck cancer for nine months. That journey included numerous medical appointments and scans, many visits to the Emergency Room, and one 4-day stay in the hospital after nearly dying from a reaction to his chemotherapy. His second and much longer journey has been that of a 10-year survivor who has coped with many debilitating and permanent side effects from chemotherapy and radiation treatments. It has left his body, his "Brokedown Palace," with numerous surgical scars, poorly functioning muscles, a speech disability, and a very limited choice of foods that can be eaten and swallowed safely. That last condition has led to him needing a feeding tube for the rest of his life. Most of his story is told in real time, as written in the blog he started when treatments began in 2009 and maintained for the next nine years. Other parts of the story are told through his reflections on the many ups and downs he experienced along the way. Team Mike was the large group of family members, friends, medical professionals, fellow members of the Cancer Survivors' Network community, and even a pet cat who helped Mike through his most difficult times over the years. Its captain was his wife, Terry, who contributes a key chapter from the perspective of his primary caregiver-a viewpoint rarely expressed in the many books written about cancer today. Mike's tells his story with great emotion, clarity, sometimes uncomfortable honesty, and an unfailing sense of humor. In the end, it's a story of perseverance, survival, and optimism-even when there was little to be optimistic about so many times on his journeys. Mike chooses not to dwell on the many things that cancer and its treatments have taken from his life. Rather, he is grateful for the many good things he still has in his life, and the many good things yet to come in the future.

At the time her tumor was identified, she was one of the thirty documented cases in the United States-and one of only two children. Her physical life came to an end on Christmas Eve, two years after her initial diagnosis. One of her goals was to write a book so she could help more people. Meghan's Journey tells the story of her life, her diagnosis, her treatment, her death, and the powerful support of a community, friends, and family. This memoir combines Meghan's words with journal entries her mother, Nancy, made throughout the journey, showing Meghan's remarkable strength and courage in the face of illness. Evident throughout are Meghan's kindness, her exuberant love of life, and the lessons she taught about how to live and make the most of every moment. An emotional, true story, Meghan's Journey serves to inspire others and give them the strength, hope, and the courage to confront life's seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Book excerpt: Yellow was her favorite color growing up on the farm. The color of corn. The color in their wedding. It was her husband's favorite "golf shirt color." It was the color of the 13 foot sunflowers they grew in their garden with their young daughters. Years later, a rare cancer diagnosis - "sarcoma"-- changed a lot in her life. Surgery. Chemotherapies. Lung surgery. Yet it turns out yellow is the "color for sarcoma"-- and sunflowers are the "flower." Tall, strong, and always looking toward the sun, Laura uses her faith, gratitude, prayer and the support of family and friends to help her through the first three years of living with sarcoma. She finds there is hope on the journey. This book is a compellation of Laura's "posts" from the Carepage.com journaling she has done through the first years of her illness. Originally thinking that she was writing to inform the congregation she co-pastored of her treatment, she found that she learned through writing as well. Insights are found in everyday things - gardens and baking and re-discovering knitting and quilting - and the extreme circumstances of her medical care, the challenges of facing disability, and severe pain starting at age 49. However, all are instances for discovering the Spirit at work in her life whether in times of lament or joy.Laura, her daughters, and family are familiar with cancer, as her husband died about six years before from Stage 4 colon cancer. Unlike colon cancer, sarcomas are very rare, and do not run in families. One out of every 100 cancers are sarcomas - of which there are almost 150 types. Laura learns that she has sclerosing epitheloid fibrosarcoma, an even more rare sub-type of sarcoma. Sarcomas are infrequently studied and have few available successful treatments. Hopeful treatment horizons stem from collaborative work of sarcoma researchers and learning more about the genetic mutations of sarcoma cells. The proceeds of this book are all going to fund sarcoma research at the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Danza is an ordinary business executive. As he approached his fiftieth birthday, he lived what many might consider a "charmed" life: great career, happy marriage, two beautiful and talented daughters, and hopes for an early retirement. In the blink of an eye, that life was challenged with an unexpected diagnosis of a rare and deadly cancer. After a deeply spiritual and personal encounter some six years after his diagnosis and surgery, Frank began to wonder how he was able to thus far "beat the odds." Why was he still alive? He realized that he had made some unusual decisions during the course of his life that might hold the answer to his questions. How was it that he decided, against his better judgment, to pursue a career in healthcare consulting at a firm that he never intended to join? Why did he make the unlikely decision to accept a position at a not-for-profit healthcare system where he learned about the cancer that would later invade his body months before it happened? From the surgeon that would eventually save his life? How did he come to develop an unpredictable friendship with a healer who taught him how to be a better husband and father, and that the mind can heal the body and who facilitated his deeply spiritual and personal encounter with our Blessed Mother? In Now I Know I Am Not Alone, Frank Danza makes the compelling case that through divine intervention, he was inspired to make uncanny decisions throughout his life that prepared him for his cancer diagnosis, surgery, and treatment. He shares six specific stories, recounting events in his life that each culminated in what he describes as "miracle-inspired decisions." These everyday miracles led him through a life path that would save his life decades after they began and make him a better husband, father, and friend. The more we learn about his life, the more we come to understand that miracle-inspired decisions don't only happen to Frank; they are gifts offered to all of us. His stories require us all to ponder the profound gift of free will, consider the reality of a superior being, and embrace our innate ability to choose hope over despair even in the most dire of circumstances.
