When a student he helped to disappear becomes a suspect in a murder, he races to find the boy and convince him to give himself up before his police chief lover figures out he's involved. Max likes being lied to even less than he likes sonnets. Yet his instincts--and his heart--tell him his boyfriend is being played and a dangerous enemy may not stop until Swift is heading up his own dead poet's society.

Book excerpt: Diddlysquat is something you may have never heard about. It is something you do not know, something others do not know, and something only God knows. In this book, you will discover many things that will amuse, befuddle, irritate, tickle, and astonish you. It is a book for trivia lovers, sports lovers (especially football), life lovers, love lovers, and church lovers--although that last one may not be on the positive side. There are many discoveries presented here that will simplify your understanding of many things unknown to you. Most of all, there are literary snippets that relate to life and what you believe in. Prepare to learn more about religion, life, and history--and sometimes laugh at the truths that are worded so well they can hurt you. Diddlysquat, by Wilkie Lee Jernigan, is work that is both entertaining and candid--painfully--in its every leaf. About the Author Wilkie Lee Jernigan was born in North Carolina but now lives in Virginia. He and his wife, Marie, have been in Chesapeake for the past eighteen years. Aside from his career in the Navy, he also worked for the postal service. Writing is something he does to occupy his time and this book is his first published work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Study of Women In Midlife GRACE K. BARUCH AND JEANNE BROOKS-GUNN To describe the middle years-that relatively long span when one is neither young nor old-as a neglected period may no longer be accurate, given current scientific and popular interest in adult development and aging. But midlife is still too often seen merely as a kind of staging area on the way to old age, when one gathers one's forces and tries to stock up on assets-health, money, relationships-that will be needed for the rigors of the last phase of life. The middle years have been characterized more as a transition period than as a time of growth, satisfaction, and creativity. As this volume will show, although midlife is not without its difficulties, it is, for many women, a time of unexpected pleasure, even power. MAJOR THEMES A central theme of this volume is the impact of social change. The influence of economic conditions, of ideology, of the normative timing of such life events as age of marriage and childbearing, are addressed in many chapters from hlany different perspectives. Social changes are shown to have both negative and positive consequences. On the nega tive side, for example, the sex differential in life expectancy is a biosocial phenomenon that greatly restricts the availability of sexual partners-or, more precisely, heterosexual partners-for older women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Way of All Flesh traces four generations of the Pontifex family. The story is narrated by Overton, godfather to the central character Ernest. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, story traces Ernest's emergence from previous generations of the Pontifex family. John Pontifex was a carpenter; his son George rises in the world to become a publisher; George's son Theobald, pressed by his father to become a minister, is manipulated into marrying Christina, the daughter of a clergyman; the main character Ernest Pontifex is the eldest son of Theobald and Christina. Ernest has an antagonistic relationship with his hypocritical and domineering parents. His aunt Alethea is aware of this relationship, but dies before she can fulfill her aim of counteracting the parents' malign influence on the boy. However, shortly before her death she secretly passes a small fortune into Overton's keeping, with the agreement that once Ernest is twenty-eight, he can receive it.
