Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Individual Study This manual of methods for the study of the human individual is intended to serve a practical and introductory rather than a scientific purpose. It is not intended for students interested in research, but is for those who wish a first guide in the study of individuals. It is in one sense and not another that it is called practical. It does not contain much about standards and results of experiments, by means of which one can safely compare individuals with the average or norm, for the purposes of an exact or scientific pedagogy. It is intended to be practical in the sense that it is hoped that by it the student can be led to observe individuals more intelligently and systematically, and thus be the better able to understand and serve them. Incidentally it is to be hoped that some insight into the nature of individuality and the scientific study of it will be acquired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of a Study of the Self The authors have discovered, through their experience as teachers, that a study of the ancestry, development, and present constitution of the self is an extremely profitable task for most students. They therefore present this outline as an aid to the systematic and thorough study of the several important aspects of the self. The purpose of the study is threefold: first, to help you to understand your self and to become a useful and happy member of society; second, to help you to understand and sympathize with other persons, especially children, and to further their development; third, to arouse your interest in the facts of heredity, of environmental influence, and in the significance of the applied sciences of eugenics and euthenics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Modern History: A Syllabus With Map Studies This syllabus represents a modest attempt to provide teachers and students with a guide to the study of modern history. The book has been so arranged as to permit of considerable elasticity in its use; it is intended to be suggestive rather than authoritative. The topical outline is planned to be neither too abbreviated to provide a compre hensive basis for study nor so elaborate as to furnish the student with a substitute for careful note - taking. It is believed that the syllabus will Offer to teachers a useful plan for collegiate courses in history, without infringing upon the individual's ideas of the relative importance of different parts of the work. Therefore, the topical outline has not been divided into lessons or assignments; no list of books for review or of topics for essays has been appended; no hard and fast rules have been laid down for the map studies. To students - particularly that rapidly growing number who study at home - it is hoped that the syllabus will prove valuable as an aid in the evaluation and co-ordination of facts, as well as in providing a general plan of study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
