Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of Church History In the present edition of the Outline of Church History, an effort has been made to adapt it more fully to the needs of the student, of the teacher, and of the general reader, than were the former editions of the work. Some departments have been thoroughly changed. Dates, so far as they can be definitely or approximately known, have been assigned to the tables of the Church Fathers. The chapter in the first edition treating of the latest history of the Church has been canceled, and another, bringing down the history to the present year, has been substituted for it. The Survey of Missions has been entirely re-written, giving the latest progress in the foreign mission fields of the Church. An Index, which was not thought necessary in the first issue of the work, has been found, by the use of the volume, to be a real want, and has been supplied in the new edition. The first summary which we give below, the General Periods of Church History, should be carefully committed to memory, to serve as a framework for the entire structure of Church History. The student will then have in mind a general survey of all the periods, in historical order, with exact dates defining the general divisions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Outline of Church History: Including the Reformed Church in the U. S Christ came into the world to do two things: first, to complete the work of redemption and to offer righteousness and salvation freely to all; secondly, to establish a church and give it authority and power to conquer the world. The work of redemption is revealed to us in the Bible, the conquests of the Church in Church History. A well-informed Christian should know both. Church History is divided into three great epochs. Ancient Christianity, 4 B.C. to 590 A.D., dealing with the early Christian Church; from the Birth of Christ to Gregory the Great. Medieval Christianity, 590-1517, unfolding the Glory and Decline of the Papacy; from Gregory the Great to the Reformation. Modern Christianity, 1517 to the present, presenting the Rise of Protestantism and the Multiplication of Denominations and Sects; from the Reformation to the Present Time. I. The Apostolic Age covers the first century. 1. The Infallible Rule. The Word of God, the life of Christ and the History of the Apostolic Church furnish the Infallible Rule by which all later developments in doctrine, worship, and church government must be measured. 2. Extension. The apostles obeyed the command of Christ: "Ye shall be my witnesses, both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth." The gospel was spread by extensive missionary journeys of the apostles, by the travels and business trips of believers, and by dispersions caused by persecutions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Church History, Vol. 24 By publishing my Lectures on Church History ("Grundzüge der Kirchengeschichte"), which I first delivered once a week as a public course for members of all faculties in the winter 1896-97, and afterwards, in approximately their present enlarged form, on many occasions, to theologians twice a week, I hope that I am meeting a more general demand, particularly among theologians. The need of an historical education for all who would take part in the organising of the Church hardly needs, in these days, to be pointed out. And yet how many succumb to the task of working their way through a forest of facts and problems; how often is disgust the only result, in the case even of gifted students and clergymen! Non-theologians easily underestimate the magnitude of the work required of theologians alone in the field of Church History, when they have not only to survey a development of two millenniums and of a rich and delicate ramification extending into every sphere of thought and life, but also to penetrate it and submit it to their criticism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the History of the Christian Reformed Church of America We cannot refrain from - nor do we apologize for - this little digression from the straight line of narration, since there are so many striking coincidences in the history of both the United Presbyterian and Christian Reformed Churches. Even the sobriquet of seceders has been awarded us, though a century later, in 1834, as the latter part of this sketch will show, and has been inflicted upon us until the present day, yea by brethren whom we love and who feel quite at liberty to boast the same godly ancestry as we Christian Reformed people do. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of the Fathers: Being an Outline of the History of the Church 98 to 461 It has become a common practice for those who are beginning the study of Church History to give equal attention to the period which precedes the conversion of Constantine and the period which includes the first four (Ecumenical Councils. Consequently this book is divided into two equal parts at the close of chapter xvi. on page 222. It begins with the death of the last apostle of our Lord, and it ends with the labours of S. Leo and S. Patrick, who both exercised so profound an influence on Western Christendom. The author has included as many references to original authorities as the space permits, and more particularly to the Ecclesiastical Histories of Eusebius and Socrates. Effort has been made to keep each chapter abreast with recent investigations, both English and foreign, so that it may more worthily represent "the mother of the saints, the image of the city that is on high, and the perpetual guardian of the Blood that knoweth no corruption." In preparing the Third Edition, the Author has been able, by the kindness of a friend, to correct several small mistakes which previously escaped his notice. D. 1304 I have tried to avoid overloading my pages with details of political history; but in no period is it so easy to miss the whole lesson of events by an attempt to isolate the special influences which affected the organised society of the Church. The interpretation which I have adopted of the important events at Canossa is not, of course, universally accepted; but the fact that it has seldom found expression in any English work may serve as my excuse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Age of Revolution: Being an Outline of the History of the Church From 1648 to 1815 N this volume I have restricted my work to the history of those religious bodies which believe episcopacy to be of the esse of the Church and which claim to have, and appear to me to have, preserved the succession of bishops according to the ancient rule. But the history is avowedly only a sketch, and there is much that is left out that might well be told in a history which dealt with the Church in another aspect as well as on another scale. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Source Book and Bibliographical Guide for American Church History Through the publication of several source collections, much has been done to assist fthe student of American political, social and economic history. But no corresponding assistance has been given to such as are interested in the more specifically religious history of our nation. It is true of course, that for the colonial period, political history to a considerable degree resolves itself into the religious and that, therefore, the source books already published contain much material that is serviceable to the church historian. For the national period, however, with its multiplication of church organization, its controversies and divisions, its nation-wide revivals, and its mission ary extension at home and abroad, no source material has been assembled for convenient access. Hence the publication of this volume, which within the briefest possible space embodies the most significant documents for the entire-field of American church history. The compiler wishes to state that the viewpoint from which he has approached the subject is that of regarding the church, not as the custodian of some divinely-revealed deposit of truth, nor as super naturally detached from an environment that is ever affecting her inner life and organization. In his selection of material he has been guided by the principle of choosing only such documents as most significantly set forth the contribution that the church has made to the progress of American society, and the manner in which from time to time she has adjusted herself to her new and changing environ ment. Denominationalism, therefore, has been relegated to the background. Ardent denominationalists. Will find their respective bodies recognized only in so far as these have played a strategic part in the development of American Christianity as a whole. The only exception is that in the case of some small but significant groups, material has been inserted to remove prevailing ignorance or miscon ception. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of the Apostles, Being an Outline of the History of the Church, of the Apostolic Age While there is a general agreement among the writers as to principles, the greatest freedom as to treatment is allowed to writers in this series. The volumes, for example, are not of the same length. Volume II., which deals with the formative period of the Church, is, not unnaturally, longer in proportion than the others. To Volume VI., which deals with the Reformation, has been allotted a similar extension. The authors, again, use their own discretion in such matters as footnotes and lists of authorities. But the aim of the series, which each writer sets before him, is to tell, clearly and accurately, the story of the Church, as a divine institution with a continuous life.
