Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline History of English Literature The purpose and plan of this little book may easily be gathered from the introductory chapter. Only a few words of preface, therefore, are needed. As I conceive it, a history of English literature, however brief, should still be a history of English literature in fact as well as in name; and for a history something more is required than a list of authors and their books, and even than a chronologically-arranged collection of biographical sketches and critical appreciations. It is true that a nation's literature is made up of the works of individual writers, and that for the ordinary purposes of study these writers may be detached from their surroundings and treated separately. But we cannot get a history of such literature unless and until each one has been put into his place in the sequence of things and considered with reference to that great body of literary production of which his work must now be regarded as a part. A history of English literature, then, must be interested primarily in English literature as a whole. Its chief aim should be to give a clear and systematic account, not of the achievements of successive great writers merely, as such, but of national changes and development. This does not imply neglect of the personal factor. On the contrary, it brings the personal factor into relief; for if each writer is to be considered with reference to literature as a whole, one main subject of enquiry must be the nature and value of his particular contribution to that whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline History of English and American Literature: For Use in Colleges and Schools It has been ray object to compress into this book the minimum of what every young person should know of the literature of our own country and England, even if his education is strictly scientific. I believe that specializing in any one period is more likely to prove fruitful and of benefit to the student if preceded by a general review of the development of thought and expression in the English-speaking peoples. The book is intended as a text-book for a course of three hours a week for a school year of thirty-three weeks. As a rule I have aimed at keeping the biographical matter and the critical matter in separate paragraphs, in order that the teacher may use his discretion in requiring biographical matter to be memorized (for there must be a certain amount of drudgery insisted on in the study of literature) and critical matter merely to be read. I have, however, endeavored to keep in view the needs and limitations of a text-book, and have omitted many names that would find a place in a manual or pocket encyclopedia. American literature is treated on a fuller plan than is English literature, the object being to make one book and one course suffice for an introduction to both subjects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Historical Outline of English Literature: From the Origins to the Close of the Eighteenth Century This brief outline of the history of English Literature is intended simply for class use. The bibliographical refer ence is made largely with the Mt. Holyoke College Library in mind, and with the hope that the shelf numbers may [lighten the difficulties of looking for books when a student wishes to save all the time for reading. The aim has been not to multiply the numbers of authorities, historical and critical, and the number of authors proper, but to diminish them so far as the subject permitted, thus simplifying the work of the student. The Special Topics, too, have been limited. It has not been an easy task to do this, as subjects of interest in any period are countless, and to select wisely an impossibility. It is hoped, however, that both Bibliographical Reference, in which Miss Bertha E. Blakely has given invaluable assist ance, and Special Topics may prove not only helpful in an Historical Outline Course, but also an incentive to further work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature This book aims to provide a general manual of English Literature for students in colleges and universities and others beyond the high-school age. The first purposes of every such book must be to outline the development of the literature with due regard to national life, and to give appreciative interpretation of the work of the most im portant authors. I have written the present volume be cause I have found no other that, to my mind, combines satisfactory accomplishment of these ends with a selec tion of authors sufficiently limited for clearness and with adequate accuracy and fulness of details, biographical and other. A manual, it seems to me, should supply a sys tematic statement of the important facts, so that the greater part of the student's time, in class and without, may be left free for the study of the literature itself. I hope that the book may prove adaptable to various methods and conditions of work. Experience has suggested the brief introductory statement of main literary prin ciples, too often taken for granted by teachers, with much resulting haziness in the student's mind. The list of as signments and questions at the end is intended, of course, to be freely treated. I hope that the list of available inexpensive editions of the chief authors may suggest a practical method of providing the material, especially for colleges which can provide enough copies for class use. Poets, of course, may be satisfactorily read in volumes of selections; but to me, at least, a book of brief extracts from twenty or a hundred prose authors is an absurdity. Perhaps I may venture to add that personally I find it ad visable to pass hastily over the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and so gain as much time as possible for the nineteenth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronological Outlines of English Literature The need of tolerably full Annals of English Literature is frequently felt by lecturers and by private students. They often require a colourless outline within which details may be placed, and which may serve to bring into prominence the chronological relations of the facts they deal with. No work hitherto published can be said to occupy, with regard to our literary history, the same position which an ordinary date book does with regard to our political history. The present volume aims at supplying this want. It is divided into two parts. Part I. brings the Annals of English Literature into connection with general European literature and with history, so that a glance enables us to see the position that a given work occupies in the line of development. We can thus obtain a conspectus of the chief literary work that was being done at any given date, and trace the growth of schools and movements. In fact it is hoped that Part I. will perform in some degree the same kind of service for the student of literary history as a map does for the student of geography. From the beginning of the sixteenth century each opening presents six columns. The first gives the dates. The second contains the names of the principal English works published in each year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Literature, Vol. 1 of 2 Among the last acts of his life were his reading of my ms., and his instructions to his colleague about some alterations or kindly suggestions for the improvement of my text. But almost all the changes my version experienced were practically made by his own hand. In this paternal oversight I have cause for self-congratulation, for not every translator is so fortunate. I also received Professor Ten Brink's authority to make enlargements, extra foot-notes, a new arrangement of the paragraphs, or whatever else I might consider helpful in bring ing the work more closely home to his English and American readers, on whose appreciation he set great value. But I have naturally refrained from making much use of such flattering confidence; any changes or additions are duly noted where they occur. Besides the author's critical revision of my text, many of the proof sheets have been read by experienced students of English Literature, which has frequently resulted in a greater clearness of diction.
