Book excerpt: An optimization-based integrated controls-structures design methodology for a class of flexible space structures is described, and the phase-0 Controls-Structures-Integration evolutionary model, a laboratory testbed at NASA Langley, is redesigned using this integrated design methodology. The integrated controls-structures design is posed as a nonlinear programming problem to minimize the control effort required to maintain a specified line-of-sight pointing performance, under persistent white noise disturbance. Static and dynamic dissipative control strategies are employed for feedback control, and parameters of these controllers are considered as the control design variables. Sizes of strut elements in various sections of the CEM are used as the structural design variables. Design guides for the struts are developed and employed in the integrated design process, to ensure that the redesigned structure can be effectively fabricated. The superiority of the integrated design methodology over the conventional design approach is demonstrated analytically by observing a significant reduction in the average control power needed to maintain specified pointing performance with the integrated design approach. Book excerpt: This paper describes the first experimental validation of an optimization-based integrated controls-structures design methodology for a class of flexible space structures. The Controls-Structures-Interaction (CSI) Evolutionary Model, a laboratory test bed at Langley, is redesigned based on the integrated design methodology with two different dissipative control strategies. The redesigned structure is fabricated, assembled in the laboratory, and experimentally compared with the original test structure. Design guides are proposed and used in the integrated design process to ensure that the resulting structure can be fabricated. Experimental results indicate that the integrated design requires greater than 60 percent less average control power (by thruster actuators) than the conventional control-optimized design while maintaining the required line-of-sight performance, thereby confirming the analytical findings about the superiority of the integrated design methodology. Amenability of the integrated design structure to other control strategies is considered and evaluated analytically and experimentally. This work also demonstrates the capabilities of the Langley-developed design tool CSI DESIGN which provides a unified environment for structural and control design. Book excerpt: This research was aimed at laying the groundwork for a long term project on the integrated, optimization-based design of large, flexible structures and their control systems. Research was carried out in four areas: (1) modeling the dynamic behavior of simple flexible structures; (2) development of a theory of nondifferentiable optimization algorithms for the solution of problems with max function type inequality constraints; (3) exploraton of the use of optimization in optimization-based design of large, flexible structures and their control systems; and (4) interactive software for optimization-based control system design.

The approach integrates the structure and controller design processes thereby providing extra opportunities for avoiding some of the disastrous effects of control-structures interaction and for discovering new, unexpected avenues of future structural design. A control formulation based on Boyd's implementation of Youla parameterization is employed. Control design parameters are coupled with structural design variables to produce a set of integrated-design variables which are selected through optimization-based methodology. A performance index reflecting spacecraft mission goals and constraints is formulated and optimized with respect to the integrated design variables. Initial studies have been concerned with achieving mission requirements with a lighter, more flexible space structure. Details of the formulation of the integrated-design approach are presented and results are given from a study involving the integrated redesign of a flexible geostationary platform. Hunziker, K. Book excerpt: An eigenspace optimization approach is used to incorporate optimal control into the structural design process for large flexible space structures. The equations of motion for an uncontrolled system are developed by deriving the kinetic and potential energy for the system and then using assumed modes to discretize the energies. These expressions are then linearized, the Lagrangian formed, and lagrange equations written for the system. An existing optimal control law is incorporated to form the equations of motion for the controlled system. A parameter optimization technique is used to minimize the mass of the Draper/RPL configuration model involving eigenspace optimization. A computer algorithm is developed that effectively optimizes a global structural parameter vector to minimize the mass of the model, while constraining specified eigenvalues. The eigenvalue sensitivities are passed to a constrained function minimization program called CONMIN which minimizes the mass of the appendages. The constraints imposed restrict the first eigenvalue to the left half plane and the natural frequency of the third eigenvalue to a specified stable region. The result is an algorithm that incorporates an existing optimal control law into the structural optimization process. Originator-supplied keywords-included: Flexible Space Structures, Eigenspace Optimization, Equations of Motion, Draper/RPL Configuration Model Theses.

Book excerpt: This report investigates the integrated control/structure design optimization problem for large flexible structures subject to stochastic disturbance forces. The full state feedback control of truss type structures is considered. The problem is formulated as a mathematical programming problem, and solved using a sequential approximations solution technique along with a scaling procedure. Due to the special nature of full state feedback control, it is shown that the controller can be assumed to be an LQR controller, where the control and state weightings are Lagrange multipliers from the mathematical programming optimality conditions. The design space is therefore effectively reduced to the truss element cross-sectional areas and these Lagrange multipliers, significantly reducing the computational effort required for solution. In this report, the solution algorithm is applied to the DRAPER I tetrahedral truss structure. Keywords: Large space structures; Multivariable control; Control structure interaction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive and accessible guide to the three main approaches to robust control design and its applications Optimal control is a mathematical field that is concerned with control policies that can be deduced using optimization algorithms. The optimal control approach to robust control design differs from conventional direct approaches to robust control that are more commonly discussed by firstly translating the robust control problem into its optimal control counterpart, and then solving the optimal control problem. Robust Control Design: An Optimal Control Approach offers a complete presentation of this approach to robust control design, presenting modern control theory in an concise manner. The other two major approaches to robust control design, the H_infinite approach and the Kharitonov approach, are also covered and described in the simplest terms possible, in order to provide a complete overview of the area. It includes up-to-date research, and offers both theoretical and practical applications that include flexible structures, robotics, and automotive and aircraft control. Robust Control Design: An Optimal Control Approach will be of interest to those needing an introductory textbook on robust control theory, design and applications as well as graduate and postgraduate students involved in systems and control research. Practitioners will also find the applications presented useful when solving practical problems in the engineering field.

Book excerpt: A typical engineering task during the development of any system is, among others, to improve its performance in terms of cost and response. Improvements can be achieved either by simply using design rules based on the experience or in an automated way by using optimization methods that lead to optimum designs. Design Optimization of Active and Passive Structural Control Systems includes Earthquake Engineering and Tuned Mass Damper research topics into a volume taking advantage of the connecting link between them, which is optimization. This is a publication addressing the design optimization of active and passive control systems. This title is perfect for engineers, professionals, professors, and students alike, providing cutting edge research and applications.
