Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathew Carey was one of the most popular and influential economic writers of his day, but his work has been largely overlooked by modern writers, who tend to focus on more scholarly writers or on precursors to contemporary classical economics. Carey was a self-taught printer and publisher who rejected Adam Smith, led the early fight for protective tariffs, and wrote hundreds of newspaper articles to convince the public of the need to protect American manufacturers. “The New Olive Branch” is Carey’s most important, accessible, and sustained elaboration of his political-economic ideas, and is accompanied in this volume by portions of his “Addresses of the Philadelphia Society for the Promotion of National Industry” (1822), which offer further insight into his rejection of classical economics.

Book Synopsis Classics and Irish Politics, 1916-2016 by : Isabelle Torrance
Download or read book Classics and Irish Politics, 1916-2016 written by Isabelle Torrance and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection addresses how models from ancient Greece and Rome have permeated Irish political discourse in the century since 1916. The 1916 Easter Rising, when Irish nationalists rose up against British imperial forces, became almost instantly mythologized in Irish political memory as a turning point in the nation's history that paved the way for Irish independence. Its centenary has provided a natural point for reflection on Irish politics, and this volume highlights an unexplored element in Irish political discourse, namely its frequent reliance on, reference to, and tensions with classical Greek and Roman models. Topics covered include the reception and rejection of classical culture in Ireland; the politics of Irish language engagement with Greek and Roman models; the intersection of Irish literature with scholarship in Classics and Celtic Studies; the use of classical referents to articulate political inequalities across gender, sexual, and class hierarchies; meditations on the Northern Irish conflict through classical literature; and the political implications of neoclassical material culture in Irish society. As the only country colonized by Britain with a pre-existing indigenous heritage of expertise in classical languages and literature, postcolonial Ireland represents a unique case in the field of classical reception. This book opens a window on a rich and varied dialogue between significant figures in Irish cultural history and the Greek and Roman sources that have inspired them, a dialogue that is firmly rooted in Ireland's historical past and continues to be ever-evolving.
Book Synopsis A Dictionary of Suffolk Crests by : Joan Corder
Download or read book A Dictionary of Suffolk Crests written by Joan Corder and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1998 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A record of crests of Suffolk and Norfolk families arranged by charge or object, covering 600 years and c.8,000 names. This volume offers a comprehensive guide to the heraldry of Suffolk over more than six centuries, covering around 8,000 names and acting as a companion to the earlier Dictionary of Suffolk Arms(1965). It is the first attempt to produce an Ordinary of crests, a classification by charge or object using standardised groupings, arranged in such a manner that they may be readily identified when the name of the bearer is unknown; the usual arrangement isalphabetical by name, an Armory. Although it relates specifically to Suffolk, many crests relating to Norfolk families are given, the two counties having always been closely connected heraldically and genealogically. The book willbe of interest for all those interested in heraldry and, on a wider level, act as a handbook for the identification of crests when borne alone, on artefacts ranging from signet rings and silverware to pub signs and school uniformcrests. JOAN CORDER, the author of a Dictionary of Suffolk Arms, is an independent scholar and recognised authority on East Anglian heraldry.

Book Synopsis Frederick Douglass and Ireland by : Christine Kinealy
Download or read book Frederick Douglass and Ireland written by Christine Kinealy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-22 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederick Douglass spent four months in Ireland at the end of 1845 that proved to be, in his own words, ‘transformative’. He reported that for the first time in his life he felt like a man, and not a chattel. Whilst in residence, he became a spokesperson for the abolition movement, but by the time he left the country in early January 1846, he believed that the cause of the slave was the cause of the oppressed everywhere. This book adds new insight into Frederick Douglass and his time in Ireland. Contemporary newspaper accounts of the lectures that Douglass gave during his tour of Ireland (in Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Cork, Limerick, and Belfast) have been located and transcribed. The speeches are annotated and accompanied by letters written by Douglass during his stay. In this way, for the first time, we hear Douglass in his own words. This unique approach allows us to follow the journey of the young man who, while in Ireland, discovered his own voice.

Download or read book Ireland, Irish America, and Work written by Amy L. May and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers perspectives on the history of labour in Ireland, as well as on Irish-American labor, particularly since the mass emigration prompted by the famine of the 1840s. It also examines the specific role that the Irish played in the Inland Northwest, as well as the intersections between the concerns of the Irish and Irish-Americans and those of the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene Indians who inhabited the region when European immigrants first arrived. It relies for its theoretical foundations on labour, postcolonial and feminist theory.
