Book excerpt: Rose Campbell, tired and ill, has come to live at "The Aunt Hill" after the death of her beloved father. Six aunts fussing and fretting over her are bad enough, but what is a quiet 13-year-old girl to do with seven boisterous boy cousins? Most YA books of a modern turn would have had Rose rush about flirting like mad and knocking down walls with her fists in her ardor to be independent and find love. But, the lost art of writing a pleasant character whose only wish is to be worth something and to love someone worth loving is not found in most modern fiction. LM Alcott writes with firm, frank beliefs that are openly expressed and understood: Women should be independent but not harsh; Men should be driven and not dissipate; Children should be loved and not neglected; And, life should be lived uprightly to the best extent of your gifts and not lazily to the disparaging of your talents. Most of all, she wants her readers to know that love isn't always the grand illusion that we build for ourselves, and the handsome hopes we have don't always happen, much to our betterment in some cases, that the ordinary and good is surprisingly the best option. All in all, this is what every young person should read, for good character and honesty is overlooked in today's society for quick wit mixed with malice and originality to the great chagrin of us all.Rose is all grown up with adult decisions to make. How shoud she live her life? In a hedonistic pursuit of pleasure or in a life of helpfulness to others. She has a fortune to spend any way she likes. Marriage looms before her and she must choose from among the eligible young men in her social circle--including her cousins. She not only looks for someone to love, but someone to respect. It was the romance between Archie and Phebe that I remembered best about this novel and I wanted to see if I had distorted the story in my memory. I hadn't. It still moved me. Still had romance.I could relate to Rose' social fling. Late nights, dancing partners, young men going off to smoke and drink then being too drunk to drive home. There was enjoyment in the social whirl as well as a wish to not be partnered with someone who was irresponsible.Recommended especially for Christian parents looking for a love story for their children without graphic sexual scenes or violence.

She is largely content to remain on the fringes of their social life but exerts a powerful influence over their emotional lives and family relations. The novel was the basis of a 1949 musical film starring Gloria Jean as Polly.Polly Milton, a bright 14-year-old country girl, visits her friend Fanny Shaw and her wealthy family in the city for the first time. Poor Polly is overwhelmed by the splendor at the Shaws' and their urbanized, fashionable lifestyles, expensive clothes and other habits she has never been exposed to, and, for the most part, dislikes. Fanny's friends ignore her because of her different behavior and simple clothing, Fanny's brother Tom teases her, and Fan herself can't help considering her unusual sometimes. However, Polly's warmth, support, and kindness eventually win the hearts of all the family members, and her old-fashioned ways teach them a lesson they would never forget.Over the next six years, Polly visits the Shaws every year and comes to be considered a member of the family. Later, Polly comes back to the city to become a music teacher and struggles with professional issues and internal emotions. Later in the book, Polly finds out that the prosperous Shaws are on the brink of bankruptcy, and she guides them to the realization that wholesome family life is the only thing they will ever need, not money or decoration. With the comfort of the ever-helpful Polly, the family gets to change for the better and to find a happier life for all of them. After being rejected by his fiancée, Trix, Tom procures a job out West, with Polly's brother Ned, and heads off to help his family and compensate for all the money he has wasted in frivolous expenditures. At that point in the book, we see that Polly and Tom seem to have developed strong feelings for one another.

"Oh, I'm not going; it's too wet. Should n't have a crimp left if I went out such a day as this; and I want to look nice when Polly comes." "You don't expect me to go and bring home a strange girl alone, do you?" And Tom looked as much alarmed as if his sister had proposed to him to escort the wild woman of Australia. "Of course I do. It's your place to go and get her; and if you was n't a bear, you'd like it."

Book excerpt: First published in two parts between 1869 and 1870, An Old Fashioned Girl follows Polly, a simple country girl, during two visits to the big city of Boston. Polly's stay with the rich and sophisticated Shaw family shows her that first impressions--namely flashy clothes and loud personalities--are what people in the city are judged by. Polly in turn teaches her city friends that simplicity and honesty are the things that really matter. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
