Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Ocean Tramp IN the original preface to the First Edition, it will be seen that by a perfectly justifiable stroke of artistic manipulation, the writer of the letters, the Ocean Tramp himself, is drowned at sea. Neither author nor publisher had offered any guarantee that the book was a record of cold facts, and it was not deemed necessary at that time to disillusion any of the public who saw fit to send in condolences upon the tragic end of a promising career. Nevertheless, the book was faithful enough in a larger sense, for the young man who wrote it had undoubtedly died and buried himself in its pages. His place, it appeared presently, was taken by a cynical person who voyaged all over the seven seas in various steamers, accumulating im mense stocks of local colour, passing through the divers experiences which befall sailor-men, reading a good many books, and gradually assuming the role of an amused spectator. Of this person, however, there is no need to speak just now, and we must go back to the time when the author, in that condition known to the cloth as out of a ship, arrived in London, the following pages tied up in a piece of. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Secret of the Sea &C Time was when the r.m.s. Patagonia' was the greyhound of the Atlantic but that time was long past. Newer and larger boats, burning less coal and making more knots, had been built nearly every year Since the Patagonia' had beaten the record by crossing the ocean in less than eight days from Browhead Castle to Fire Island Light. Now not only were there other deer-hounds of the deep two days faster than the Patagonia had ever been, but the Patagonia herself, like the man who went around the world, had lost a day. Although the Patagonia had changed owners, and was now no longer a royal mail steam-ship, it had not yet fallen to the low estate of the sea-tramp, a home less wanderer over the face of the waters, bearing hides from Buenos Ayres on one trip, and on the next carrying coals from Newcastle. She still belonged to a line in good repute, and she still made her regular round trip every five weeks from Liverpool to New York. Thus it was that the New York newspapers had to announce one Sunday morning, after the New England Spring 'had set in with its usual severity, ' that the Patagonia' had sailed from Liver pool the day before, having on board eighty-seven first-cabin passengers and two hundred and eleven in the steerage, and bringing also in gold. In due course the 'patagonia ought to have arrived at Sandy Hook about ten days after she left the Mersey. Except when detained by stress Of weather, the Patagonia was wont to arrive off Quarantine not later than Tuesday afternoon. But on this occasion Tuesday night came, and Wed nesday night, and yet the Patagonia came not. It happened that the r.m.s. Barataria, ' which was then devoting its energies to the lowering of the record, had left Liverpool an hour later than the Patagonia, ' had waited for the mails at Queenstown, as the Patagonia had not, and yet had landed its passengers on Sunday morning. Nor did the Officers of the Barataria' report any storms which would justify the tardiness of the Patagonia.' It was known, however, that the missing ship was perfectly sea-worthy, and, indeed, in excellent con dition, and her captain was a thorough sailor. So many little mishaps may occur to delay an ocean steamer - the bearings may get themselves over heated, or it may be necessary to stop the engines in mid-ocean to repack the steam-chest - that no anxiety was felt by the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sea and Shore: Or the Tramps of a Traveller This volume closes the series, and leaves Phil comfortably settled, and still persuing his Onward and Upward career. We are sorry to leave him, for we always prefer Old friends to new acquaintances. We hope the venerable judge on the shores of the Pacific is not the only one who shares this regret with us, and we indulge our own vanity in quoting a few lines from his kind letter: Do you know, I like your Phil Farringford ever so much, and shall be sorry to bid him good by, for he is a noble fellow and a fine character. Therefore, I hope his successor will not disgrace him, but will dofull justice to his predecessor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The dugouts were canoes hollowed out of tree trunks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. My small son, for instance, when barely four was deeply offended because I declined to buy him one of the Belle Steamers which was embarking pas sengers at Southwold Pier, and only the other day when I asked him what he would best like to have in all the world the answer, A boat, came pat. And yet the child has been afloat but once in his life, and then only for a few minutes in a dinghy when a baby of a few months old. If this taste is not inherited I am at a loss to know from where he gets it. Anyhow, it pleases me to think that his love of boats has been inherited from his father, for I have been passionately attached to yachts and sailing craft of all descriptions as long as I can remember.
