Book excerpt: It's 1854 and war rages between Britian and their French allies against Russia in Crimea, Turkey. Many of Britain's sons have already been shipped to the front lines and more join them daily in the trenches. Lady Lillian Hansford is quite disappointed that the dashing British Captain she's just met and has nevertheless formed an immediate attachment to, has been sent to fight against the Russians. Jaded and dejected, Lady Lillian searches the newspapers daily for news of the war and, in particular, her Captain. In so doing she discovers the terrible conditions of the wounded and dying soldiers in Crimea. She also learns that Miss Florence Nightingale is gathering her own group of nurses with plans to travel to the Crimea to help treat the wounded and improve their conditions. Although initially motivated by a sense of Christian charity, she nonetheless, see an opportunity to be with her Captain. She convinces Miss Nightingale to take her with her as her personal assistant. Lillian works tirelessly to ease the suffering of the wounded but in the chaos of war, is unable to find her Captain. She does encounter one of his lieutenants, James Wright, whom she resents and mistrusts, convinced he is trying to keep her from her Captain. Lieutenant James Wright was raised by a poor Irish family and groomed from the start for a military career. He never questioned his commission when he found himself fighting against the Russians in the Crimea. He does question, however, his frequent and puzzling dreams about a woman who he felt he knew to be his mother but who was not the woman who raised him. Were these dreams or childhood memories resurfacing? Lillian begins to question her own convictions as well. For some reason nothing is as it seems concerning her Captain. And she finally comes to the conclusion that what she really desires is just one worthy gentleman of noble character and firm convictions who would be a hero rather than acting the part for personal advantage.

Book excerpt: An Italian SCHINDLER'S LIST, this is the inspirational story of Gino Bartali, who made the greatest comeback in Tour de France history and secretly aided the Italian Resistance during the Second World War. ROAD TO VALOUR is the inspiring, against-the-odds story of Gino Bartali, the cyclist who made the greatest comeback in Tour de France history and still holds the record for the longest gap between victories. Yet it was his actions during the Second World War, when he secretly aided the Resistance, rather than his remarkable exploits on a bike, that truly cemented his place in the hearts and minds of the Italian people. Based on nearly ten years of research, and including fascinating new interviews, this is the only book written that fully explores the scope of Bartali's wartime work. A breathtaking account of one man's unsung heroism and his resilience in the face of adversity, this is an epic tale of courage, comeback and redemption, and the untold story of one of the greatest athletes of the twentieth century.

The sinister goal of this organization—to pit the United States against China in a bid to dismantle the world’s security and economy. Back on US soil, Logan and his task force pursue the elusive foe from the woods of northern Virginia to the banks of the Chesapeake Bay, from suburban Maryland across the urban sprawl of Washington DC. The stakes have never been higher for Logan or America itself... “Suspenseful, inventive, and relentless, Field of Valor unfolds at lightning pace” (Meg Gardiner, New York Times bestselling author) and is perfect for fans of the pulse-pounding works of Brad Thor, Vince Flynn, and Jack Carr.

The work covers the history of the Roman Empire, Europe, and the Catholic Church from 98 to 1590 and discusses the decline of the Roman Empire in the East and West. Because of its relative objectivity and heavy use of primary sources, unusual at the time, its methodology became a model for later historians. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is true valor and how do grief, survival and battle fatigue affect soldiers? Literature and history show that valor's purpose is often less than daring, generous and noble. Through examples in literature and the impact of real combat, the author shows how it can change to personal pride, a badge of distinction, and a means to reputation; it has sparked fear of cowardice and generated degradation to overcome it; it has prodded soldiers to kill for killing's sake.

This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 2143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is a book of history which traces the trajectory of Western civilization (as well as the Islamic and Mongolian conquests) from the height of the Roman Empire to the fall of Byzantium. The work covers the history of the Roman Empire, Europe, and the Catholic Church from 98 to 1590 and discusses the decline of the Roman Empire in the East and West: I. The first period may be traced from the age of Trajan and the Antonines, when the Roman monarchy, having attained its full strength and maturity, began to verge towards its decline; and will extend to the subversion of the Western Empire, by the barbarians of Germany and Scythia, the rude ancestors of the most polished nations of modern Europe. This extraordinary revolution, which subjected Rome to the power of a Gothic conqueror, was completed about the beginning of the sixth century. II. The second period commences with the reign of Justinian, who, by his laws, as well as by his victories, restored a transient splendor to the Eastern Empire. It will comprehend the invasion of Italy by the Lombards; the conquest of the Asiatic and African provinces by the Arabs, who embraced the religion of Mahomet; the revolt of the Roman people against the feeble princes of Constantinople; and the elevation of Charlemagne, who, in the year eight hundred, established the second, or German Empire of the West III. The last and longest period includes about six centuries and a half; from the revival of the Western Empire, till the taking of Constantinople by the Turks, and the extinction of a degenerate race of princes. Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) was an English historian and Member of Parliament.
