Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "File systems are essential and highly visible components of operating systems. File system models determine the construction and usage of file systems. Currently there are a few common file system models; these models are closely tied to specific programming languages. Though these models contain some data storage and manipulation abstractions, they are neither general nor easily extensible. To characterize file systems properly, a model must be simple, general, effective, and extensible. In this paper I propose such a file system model and use an object-oriented approach to build and describe it. The object-oriented approach is chosen to exploit the techniques of data encapsulation, data abstraction, inheritance, and polymorphism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a short visit to Bremen in December 1989 John Rosenberg had several discussions with me about computer architecture. Although we had previously worked together for more than a decade in Australia we had not seen each other for over a year, following my move to Bremen in 1988. Meanwhile John was spending a year on study leave at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland with Professor Ron Morrison and his persistent programming research group. From our conversations it was quite clear that John was having a most fruitful time in St. Andrews and was gaining valuable new insights into the world of persistent programming. He was very keen to explore the significance of these insights for the MONADS Project, which we had been jOintly directing since the early 1980s. MONADS was not about persistent programming. In fact it had quite different origins, in the areas of software engineering and information protection. In an earlier stage of the project our ideas on these themes had led us into the world of computer architecture and even hardware deSign, in our attempts to provide an efficient base machine for our software ideas. The most important practical result of this phase of the project had been the development of the MONADS-PC, a mini computer which would be better compared with say a V tv

Book excerpt: I will show that structuring an operating system in an object- oriented fashion and using the capabilities provided by an object-oriented programming language allows the construction of portable, extensible and maintainable operating systems without sacrificing performance. Not only is performance not sacrificed, I will even show how such techniques can often help lead to increased performance over conventionally structured systems."

Book Synopsis Interoperable Database Systems (DS-5) by : D.K. Hsiao
Download or read book Interoperable Database Systems (DS-5) written by D.K. Hsiao and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-23 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of databases within organizations have made it imperative to allow effective sharing of information from these disparate database systems. In addition, it is desirable that the individual systems must maintain a certain degree of autonomy over their data in order to continue to provide for their existing applications and to support controlled access to their information. Thus it becomes necessary to develop new techniques and build new functionality to interoperate these autonomous database systems and to integrate them into an overall information system. Research into interoperable database systems has advanced substantially over recent years in response to this need. The papers presented in this volume cover a wide spectrum of both theoretical and pragmatic issues related to the semantics of interoperable database systems. Topics covered include techniques to support the translation between database schema and between database languages; object oriented frameworks for supporting interoperability of heterogeneous databases, knowledge base integration and techniques for overcoming schematic discrepancies in interoperable databases. In addition, there are papers addressing issues of security transaction processing, data modelling and object identification in interoperable database systems. It is hoped the publication will represent a valuable collective contribution to research and development in the field for database researchers, implementors, designers, application builders and users alike.

Download or read book Data Clustering in C++ written by Guojun Gan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-03-28 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data clustering is a highly interdisciplinary field, the goal of which is to divide a set of objects into homogeneous groups such that objects in the same group are similar and objects in different groups are quite distinct. Thousands of theoretical papers and a number of books on data clustering have been published over the past 50 years. However,
Book Synopsis Readings in Object-Oriented Database Systems by : Stanley B. Zdonik
Download or read book Readings in Object-Oriented Database Systems written by Stanley B. Zdonik and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 1990 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive collection is a survey of research in object-oriented databases, offering a substantive overview of the field, section introductions, and over 40 research papers presented in their original scope and detail. The balanced selection of articles presents a confluence of ideas from both the language and database research communities that have contributed to the object-oriented paradigm. The editors develop a general definition and model for object-oriented databases and relate significant research efforts to this framework. Further, the collection explores the fundamental notions behind object-oriented databases, semantic data models, implementation of object-oriented systems, transaction processing, interfaces, and related approaches. Research and theory are balanced by applications to CAD systems, programming environments, and office information systems.
Book Synopsis Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences by : Wade H. Shafer
Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the though that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemi nation. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 37 (thesis year 1992) a total of 12,549 thesis titles from 25 Canadian and 153 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 37 reports theses submitted in 1992, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Synopsis A Device Management Framework for an Object-oriented Operating System by : Panagiotis Kougiouris
Download or read book A Device Management Framework for an Object-oriented Operating System written by Panagiotis Kougiouris and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical devices are represented as objects, instances of subclasses of the abstract Device class. Both control and data operations are requested through method invocation on Device objects. Device subclasses are reusable across different architectures and controllers. The DevicesController class, which acts as server for Devices, encapsulates the architectural and controller dependencies. The separation of reusable machine-independent and machine-dependent characteristics leads to flexible and reusable device drivers."
