Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this work is to obtain a practical analytical method for the analysis of certain nonlinear networks. To do this, an iterative procedure is developed, and its ability to easily generate good approximate solutions is examined. Association of an auxiliary linear system with the nonlinear system provides the basis of the method, and iterations are carried out by driving the linear system with an error function obtained from the nonlinear system. A proof is given showing that the procedure coverages for a wide variety of auxiliary linear systems. Application of the method is made to a first-order nonlinear equation using several different auxiliary linear equations; it is shown that the choice of linear equation determines the time interval over which the approximation is best. Picard's successive-approximation method is shown to be a special case of the iterative procedure, wherein the auxiliary linear model is a pure integrator; however, if a small-signal linearization is used to select the auxiliary linear model, the procedure is then shown to be very similar to the classical method of perturbations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the approximation of nonlinear equations using iterative methods. Nine contributions are presented on the construction and analysis of these methods, the coverage encompassing convergence, efficiency, robustness, dynamics, and applications. Many problems are stated in the form of nonlinear equations, using mathematical modeling. In particular, a wide range of problems in Applied Mathematics and in Engineering can be solved by finding the solutions to these equations. The book reveals the importance of studying convergence aspects in iterative methods and shows that selection of the most efficient and robust iterative method for a given problem is crucial to guaranteeing a good approximation. A number of sample criteria for selecting the optimal method are presented, including those regarding the order of convergence, the computational cost, and the stability, including the dynamics. This book will appeal to researchers whose field of interest is related to nonlinear problems and equations, and their approximation.

Book excerpt: Solving nonlinear equations in Banach spaces (real or complex nonlinear equations, nonlinear systems, and nonlinear matrix equations, among others), is a non-trivial task that involves many areas of science and technology. Usually the solution is not directly affordable and require an approach using iterative algorithms. This Special Issue focuses mainly on the design, analysis of convergence, and stability of new schemes for solving nonlinear problems and their application to practical problems. Included papers study the following topics: Methods for finding simple or multiple roots either with or without derivatives, iterative methods for approximating different generalized inverses, real or complex dynamics associated to the rational functions resulting from the application of an iterative method on a polynomial. Additionally, the analysis of the convergence has been carried out by means of different sufficient conditions assuring the local, semilocal, or global convergence. This Special issue has allowed us to present the latest research results in the area of iterative processes for solving nonlinear equations as well as systems and matrix equations. In addition to the theoretical papers, several manuscripts on signal processing, nonlinear integral equations, or partial differential equations, reveal the connection between iterative methods and other branches of science and engineering.

Book excerpt: Iterative processes are the tools used to generate sequences approximating solutions of equations describing real life problems. Intended for researchers in computational sciences and as a reference book for advanced computational method in nonlinear analysis, this book is a collection of the recent results on the convergence analysis of numerical algorithms in both finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional spaces and presents several applications and connections with fixed point theory. It contains an abundant and updated bibliography and provides comparisons between various investigations made in recent years in the field of computational nonlinear analysis. The book also provides recent advancements in the study of iterative procedures and can be used as a source to obtain the proper method to use in order to solve a problem. The book assumes a basic background in Mathematical Statistics, Linear Algebra and Numerical Analysis and may be used as a self-study reference or as a supplementary text for an advanced course in Biosciences or Applied Sciences. Moreover, the newest techniques used to study the dynamics of iterative methods are described and used in the book and they are compared with the classical ones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing a looping water distribution network requires the solution of one of the nonlinear systems of equations: the flow equations that solve for the discharges in the links or the head equations that solve for the nodal heads. All of the previous methods are numerical ones, so the nonlinearity of the system is handled by iterations until a convergence criterion is met. Some of the disadvantages of the iterative methods are: slow convergence of the solution, long computation time, need for an initial estimate and possibility of divergence. This work is a first attempt to analyze a water distribution network analytically. A direct approach for solving either the flow or the head equations was developed based on a perturbation technique called the delta expansion. It consists of expanding the variables in series with different powers of the perturbation parameter 6 . A sequence of linear systems of equations is obtained whose solution is fast and direct. The approach is also extended to incorporate pumps and valves. The perturbation solution for the flow equations was developed for the zeroth order and for higher orders. Also a mathematical technique called the Padi approximants was used to improve the accuracy of the estimated solution. On the other hand, another perturbation solution was developed for the head equations in order to find the zeroth to the sixth order flow rates. Both solutions were tested on networks with different sizes. The head equations were found to give an accurate solution with a smaller perturbation order than the flow equations. The third order perturbation solution of the head equations is accurate enough for designing water distribution networks.

A number of computing techniques are considered, such as methods of operator approximation with any given accuracy; operator interpolation techniques including a non-Lagrange interpolation; methods of system representation subject to constraints associated with concepts of causality, memory and stationarity; methods of system representation with an accuracy that is the best within a given class of models; methods of covariance matrix estimation;methods for low-rank matrix approximations; hybrid methods based on a combination of iterative procedures and best operator approximation; andmethods for information compression and filtering under condition that a filter model should satisfy restrictions associated with causality and different types of memory. As a result, the book represents a blend of new methods in general computational analysis, and specific, but also generic, techniques for study of systems theory ant its particularbranches, such as optimal filtering and information compression.- Best operator approximation,- Non-Lagrange interpolation,- Generic Karhunen-Loeve transform- Generalised low-rank matrix approximation- Optimal data compression- Optimal nonlinear filtering
