Book excerpt: 96-year-old Benedict Morton thinks his family is trying to kill him, so he hires Connor Wood, P.I., to attend his birthday party and sniff out who would do the deed. But when Morton is murdered that night, Wood has to sort it all out with a cast of characters that are clearly antagonistic right from the off. Was it eldest son James, the one who may or may not be the executor of Morton's will? His sister Tracy, who has a vindictive streak a mile long? Their half-brother Peter, who has a short fuse? The bastard son Jared? The surly cook? The maid? The butler? This classic whodunit shows everything isn't as it seems, and it's up to Wood to determine exactly who it was that killed the old man.

Darius Irani, a hyper-intelligent young man, goes on a murderous spree, targeting young, beautiful, urban women, who fall prey to his easy charm, sense of humour and innate madness. Strangely, he does not rape his victims, but the brutalisation is savage-like, indicating a deep hatred for women. The killer manages to evade the cops every single time. As the inevitable cat and mouse game plays out – with a great deal of blood spilling along the way, and climaxing in a devastating reality – the journey reveals the depravity of the human mind, and the way politicians, police and media deal with hard crime in this country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jovanka's comfortable life comes to an abrupt end as her husband of twenty-five years casually suggests a marital breakup. The ensuing crisis is intensified by the fact that she is an older woman in her late fifties—hence doubly affected by a divorce. To her, this is her husband's "invitation to die." Thus begins the painful account of Jovanka's life and her struggle to survive as she attempts to put her life together. She seeks consolation in friends but finds only indifference, visits a prayer group meeting and finds the experience less than uplifting, attends a series of group encounters, and experiences a short-lived camaraderie. She checks herself into a mental institution to escape the pressures of the real world but finds that there is no cure for what ails her. She leaves town temporarily and even attempts to learn new marketable skills. She contacts old friends but finds only disappointment and rejection. Finally, she decides to break away, not via an institution or a temporary flight, but by leaving the familiar surroundings that had become a hostile ground. Only by burning her bridges behind her can she hope to rebuild her shattered life. The author's incisive portrayal of the characters makes them real as life, while the role of women in our society is being scrutinized—from the self-effacing housewife to the egocentric lesbian. The book reaches an unexpected climax as Jovanka defines her life in straightforward terms. With extraordinary skill, Ms. Brumlik has created characters as vivid and real as life itself. The dialogue is sharp, and every reader will be fascinated with the spellbinding drama of a life in turmoil.

Book excerpt: An invitation to dine turns deadly as DI John Redfyre returns for his second investigation. Cambridge, 1924 in early summertime. May Balls, punting on the Cam, flirting and dancing the tango are the preoccupations of bright young people, but bright young Detective Inspector John Redfyre finds himself mired in multiple murders. One morning, his dog discovers a corpse neatly laid on a tombstone in the graveyard adjoining St. Bede’s College. An army greatcoat and well-worn boots suggest the dead man may have been a former soldier, though the empty bottle of brandy and a card bearing the words “An Invitation to Dine” on the victim ring a discordant note. Even more unsettling is the autopsy, which reveals death by strangulation and unusual contents in the stomach from the man’s last meal. Redfyre learns that this murder is one of several unsolved cases linked to a secretive and sinister dining club at St. Bede’s. Redfyre, himself an ex-rifleman, becomes caught in a dark tale of revenge, betrayal and injustice—a lingering mystery from a long-forgotten war. With the unlikely assistance of his lead suspect, he gradually unearths the dead man’s story and fights to right an ancient wrong.

Book excerpt: It has been over twenty years since the publication of The Ragamuffin Gospel, a book many claim as the shattering of God’s grace into their lives. Since that time, Brennan Manning has been dazzingly faithful in preaching and writing variations on that singular theme – “Yes, Abba is very fond of you!” But today the crowds are gone and the lights are dim, the patches on his knees have faded. If he ever was a ragamuffin, truly it is now. In this his final book, Brennan roves back his past, honoring the lives of the people closest to him, family and friends who’ve known the saint and the sinner, the boy and the man. Far from some chronological timeline, these memories are witness to the truth of life by one who has lived it – All Is Grace.

KATHLEEN STASSEN BERGER’s bestselling textbooks are un-matched for the engrossing, culturally inclusive way they communicate the essential science of human development. But that does not even begin to convey what the Berger experience is: What makes these bestselling textbooks so distinctive is the unmistakable presence of KATHLEEN STASSEN BERGER on every page, in writing that continually draws on the author’s teaching and family life to demonstrate a remarkable understanding not just of the field, but of students’ questions, their concerns, and their lives. The distinctive, definitive BERGER touch is evident throughout her new textbook, Invitation to the Life Span. This brief, original, 15-chapter textbook was created from page 1 to address the challenges teachers and students face when covering the entire life span in a semester (or even a quarter!). The hallmark Berger qualities are all here—the relatable presentation of research, the inclusive approach to world cultures, the study help that builds critical thinking and observational skills, the outstanding media and supplements—and all held together with Berger’s skill in bringing students and the science together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus spent a chunk of his ministry eating and drinking with the "sinners and tax collectors" of the world. If we strive to be more like Jesus, shouldn’t we do more of what he did? Hospitality involves more than the domesticated event we have grown accustomed to practicing. It is an embodiment of all the Christian life stands for: a gesture of love, opening up our hearts and lives, and sacrificing luxury and security for the chance to display God’s glory. To receive hospitality from others is an invitation to receive God’s transformative power to work in their lives. Readers will ask themselves these questions: • What is hospitality? • Is it something I am, or something I do? • How do I offer my life as a gesture of hospitality? • What are some practical ways for me to display and receive hospitality?

Book excerpt: Each society that consumes alcohol has its own unique drinking culture, and each society deals with the drunken products of that culture in particular ways. As Mark D. West shows in Drunk Japan, the distinctive features of Japanese drinking culture and its intoxication-related laws are not simply interesting in and of themselves, but offer a unique window into Japanese society more broadly. Drawing upon close readings of over 5,000 published Japanese court opinions on drunkenness-related cases, he provides a rich description of Japanese alcohol consumption, drinking culture, and intoxication. West reveals that the opinions not only show patterns in what, where, and why people drink in Japan, but they also focus to a surprising extent on characteristics (including occupation, wealth, gender, and education) of individual litigants. By examining the consistencies and contradictions that emerge from the cases, West finds that, at its most extreme, the Japanese legal system is hyper-individualized. Focusing on individual people sometimes leads courts to ignore forensic evidence, to rely on post-arrest drinking tests, and to calculate prison sentences based on factors such as a mother's promise to help her adult child abstain. Cumulatively, the colorful and often tragic cases West uses not only illuminate the complexity of the culture, but they also reveal an entirely new vision of Japanese law and a comprehensive picture of alcohol use in Japanese society writ large.
