These high-level academic and sport-related demands can create perfectionistic tendencies. Prior literature shows that perfectionistic concerns are positively related to athlete burnout while perfectionistic strivings are negatively related. For the prevention of athlete burnout, physical and psychological rest has been recommended. However, there is no previous study that explored the relationship between perfectionism and psychological rest. Therefore, the present study aims to contribute to the existing literature in two ways. First, the relationship between perfectionism and athlete burnout in D-I collegiate athletes was explored. Second, the relationship between perfectionism and psychological rest was explored in these athletes. A sample of 295 D-I, female, team sport athletes participated. Athletes completed online questionnaires comprised of the Competitive Orientations Scale (Sport MPS-2), The Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ), and the Wakeful Resting Experiences Questionnaire. Four subsamples were identified from the scores on these measures: a pure evaluative concerns perfectionism group (n = 11), a mixed perfectionism group (n = 28), a non-perfectionism group (n = 23), and a pure personal standards perfectionism group (n = 18). Hypothesis 1 stated that burnout scores would be highest in the pure evaluative concerns perfectionism (ECP) group, second highest in the mixed perfectionism group, third highest in the non-perfectionism group, and lowest in the pure personal standards perfectionism (PSP) group. Hypothesis 2 stated that psychological resting experience scores would be highest in the pure PSP group, second highest in the non-perfectionism group, third highest in the mixed perfectionism group, and lowest in the pure ECP group. Two separate One-Way ANOVA tests were performed to test the hypotheses. Hypotheses were partially supported. The results showed that athletes with pure ECP and mixed perfectionism had significantly higher levels of athlete burnout compared to athletes with non-perfectionism and pure PSP. Moreover, athletes with non-perfectionism reported significantly greater recent engagement in psychological resting experiences compared to athletes with mixed perfectionism. This study contributes to the literature by furthering the research on perfectionism and burnout and being a pioneer in research on the relationship between perfectionism and psychological rest. These high demands raise concern regarding mental health among athletes. Therefore, research concerned with reducing the effects of such demands on the mental well-being of athletes seems increasingly important. Researchers have previously concluded that rest (e.g., physical rest and mental rest) is a crucial component of promoting mental well-being in athletes. Researchers have further developed the concept of mental rest and provided information regarding specific psychological resting experiences to aid the attainment of mental rest. However, there are some gaps and limitations within the sport literature including: (a) a lack of assessments for measuring mental rest, (b) the degree to which athletes are obtaining psychological resting experiences, and (c) the extent to which feeling mentally rested impacts depressive symptoms and well-being. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of mental rest on depressive symptoms and well-being in athletes. The direct effect of demands (e.g., training demands and competition demands) on feeling mentally rested and the moderating effects of psychological resting experiences was also be examined. NCAA Division I female athletes completed an online questionnaire administered via Qualtrics comprised of a demographics survey, DISQ-Sport, perceptions of recent experiences of psychological rest questionnaire, perceived level of mental rest scale, CES-D, and MHC-SF. Multiple regression analyses were performed to test the hypothesized model. The results showed that emotional demands are significantly negatively related to perceived level of mental rest and that there was a significant moderation relationship between emotional demands, resting experience 2 (id est, reduction in effortful thinking), and perceived level of mental rest. The results also revealed that student-athletes who reported feeling poorly rested mentally, experienced more depressive symptoms and lower levels of well-being.

However, there are several studies that show sport burnout is present in athletes and can be influenced by different factors, including motivation. Also, studies have shown that physical activity plays an important role in any college aged person and can decrease in former college athletes in retirement. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to review athlete burnout, motivation, specialization, and exercise habits in retired college athletes. Participants, recently retired within two years and played at least one full season filled out the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ), International Physical Activity Questionnaire - Short Form (IPAQ-SF), Sport Motivation Scale (SMS), and demographic questionnaires voluntarily. Athletes were recruited via email blast to the UCO student body. Pearson's Product Momentum Correlation was conducted to see if there was any relationship between the variables. A significant relationship did not exist between any of the variables (p > .05); therefore, a multiple regression was not used to further analyze. The researcher hypothesized that motivation would show a strong relationship with exercise habits, burnout would show a strong relationship with decreased exercise habits, and sports specialization would show a strong relationship with decreased exercise habits and increased burnout in retired college athletes. The researcher concluded there was no relationship between burnout, motivation, specialization, and exercise habits in this population. Further research is suggested to investigate other relationships like coach's influence on burnout and observing burnout at different points of athlete's careers.

Perfectionism and motivation are two psychological factors that can influence performance of athletes in a positive or negative manner. The relationship between perfectionism and motivation has been studied previously, but the relationship has not been studied with sport specific measurements and the collegiate athlete population has largely been ignored. Purpose: To investigate the levels of perfectionism and motivation in collegiate Division I student-athletes and determine how the forms of perfectionism (adaptive versus maladaptive) are related to the different levels of motivation (controlled vs autonomous forms) in this population. Hypotheses: It was hypothesized that collegiate athletes would have high levels of personal standards, high perceived coach pressure, and concern about mistakes and higher levels of controlled forms of motivation than autonomous motivation. Further, it was hypothesized that the adaptive forms of perfectionism would relate to autonomous forms of motivation whereas the maladaptive forms of perfectionism would relate to controlled forms of motivation in collegiate athletes. Methods: Two hundred and sixty-four student – athletes with an average age of 19.62(1.34) were recruited from a Division I university in the Western United States. Perfectionism was assessed using the Sport – Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale -2 with its six subscales (personal standards, organization, perceived parental pressure, perceived coach pressure, concern over mistakes and doubts about actions) and motivation was assessed by using the Behavioral Regulation in Sports Questionnaire with its nine subscales (amotivation, external regulation, introjected regulation, identified regulation, integrated regulation, intrinsic motivation to know, intrinsic motivation to accomplish, intrinsic motivation to experience stimulation and general intrinsic motivation). Statistical Analysis: Means and standard deviations were calculated to describe the sample. To test the relationship between the variables, a multivariate multiple regression (MMR) with follow up canonical correlation was conducted with the six subscales of the Sport – Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale -2 predicting the nine subscales of the Behavioral Regulation in Sports Questionnaire. Results: Student-athletes had high levels of personal standards and organization. Additionally, they had high levels of intrinsic motivation and autonomous forms of motivation. Further, the MMR indicated that two functions were significant and explained 19.62% of the variance (functions 1 = 15.62%, function 2 = 4.0%). Investigation of the functions indicated that personal standards, organization, concern over mistakes, and perceived parental pressure predicted autonomous forms of motivation. Maladaptive forms of perfectionism, represented by perceived coach pressure, perceived parental pressure, doubts about actions and concern over mistakes, positively predicted controlled forms of motivation and inversely predicted autonomous forms of motivation. Conclusion: Findings imply that an environment with low coach pressure and a focus on helping athletes learn new skills without concerns for mistakes would be most beneficial for athletes. Specifically, these changes would decrease perceived coach pressure, concern over mistakes and doubts about action and hence increase the likelihood of intrinsic motivation and autonomous forms of motivation. The purpose of the thesis was to extend this research by further examining their motivational consequences for athletes and identifying the psychological mechanisms that explain their divergent consequences. The first two studies suggested that the positive relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and athlete burnout was mediated by the tendency to engage in validation-seeking and utilise avoidant coping, whereas the inverse relationship between self-oriented perfectionism and athlete burnout was mediated by the tendency to utilise problem-focused coping and eschew avoidant coping. Because these initial studies provided little evidence to suggest that self-oriented perfectionism has negative psychological consequences for athletes, the nature of self-oriented perfectionism and its consequences were examined more closely in two subsequent studies. A comparative study examining similarities and differences in the correlates of selforiented perfectionism and conscientious achievement striving found that while both include a commitment to high standards, self-oriented perfectionism also includes a concern over mistakes, fear of failure and negative reactions to imperfection. An experimental study examining the response of student-athletes II higher in this dimension of perfectionism to successive failures further suggested that, in comparison to those with lower levels of self-oriented perfectionism, those with higher levels of self-oriented perfectionism experienced a more pronounced increase in threat following an initial failure and reported withdrawing effort from the subsequent performance. The final two studies suggest that the divergent consequences of these two dimensions of perfectionism may also be explained by differences in the controllability of sources of self-worth and evaluative standards. In addition, in some instances, perceptions of the achievement climate may influence the self-criticism experienced by perfectionists. Collectively, this series of studies suggest that socially prescribed perfectionism will invariably lead to motivational and psychological difficulties for athletes. In contrast, such difficulties may not be inevitable for those with higher levels of self-oriented perfectionism; however, it may render athletes vulnerable to psychological difficulties when personal standards are not meet.

(2003) suggested that passions become central features of an athlete’s identity and selfdefinition, allowing them to persevere and achieve high levels of success. Athletes in aesthetic sports often begin their quest for athletic success at an early age (Cote & Fraser-Thomas, 2008). A mixed-methods research design was used to investigate the relations among passion, perfectionism, and athletic identity in aesthetic, individual sport athletes. Participants were 151 female figure skaters, gymnasts, divers, and dancers. Participants completed the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS), the Passion Scale (PS), and the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS), and a demographic questionnaire. Athletic identity was positively associated with obsessive passion. Narrative interviews of 10 participants yielded the following seven themes: seeking perfection, start them young, living and breathing sport, prominence of athletic identity, coping with injury, the importance of relationships within sport, and the ‘dark side’ of sport participation. Participants’ accounts suggested that the development of athletic identity, perfectionism and obsessive passion is heavily influenced by financial and time investment, early specialization, and parental involvement. Negative consequences of maladaptive patterns of athletic identity, perfectionism and obsessive passion could include chronic injury, burnout/overtraining, eating disorders, and difficulty coping with injury, loss of sport or transition out of sport. The current study can provide information to coaches to help raise their awareness of problematic behaviors among their athletes and to encourage a balanced training regimen, exploration outside of sport, and positive relationships within the sport environment.

Book excerpt: Researchers in occupational settings have found similarities in the symptomatology of workplace burnout and depression (Bianchi, Schonfeld, & Laurent, 2015). However, sport psychology researchers have stated that sport burnout and depression are separate constructs (Cresswell & Eklund, 2006). The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between burnout and depression to help determine if their symptoms are indeed distinct, or if they potentially overlap. An additional purpose was to assess gender differences. At present, there are no studies examining the relationship between burnout and depression in an intercollegiate athlete sample. Participants were 422 intercollegiate athletes from all divisions of the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA. Athletes completed an anonymous online survey consisting of the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ; Raedeke & Smith, 2001), the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS; Zung, 1965), and two symptom checklists designed for this study. Results revealed a strong, statistically significant positive correlation (r = .600) between total burnout and depression scores. Moreover, each subscale of the ABQ was statistically significantly correlated to total depression scores. The correlation between burnout and depression was stronger in female athletes compared to male athletes; however, this difference was not statistically significant. Sixty-six percent of the sample reported having experienced what they defined as burnout from sport. Of this subsample, forty-seven percent reported that while "burned out," they experienced five or more Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-V, American Psychiatric Association, 2013) symptoms of depression, with at least one being a depressed mood or loss of interest. The current study demonstrates there is a strong relationship between sport burnout and depression in intercollegiate athletes, indicating a possible overlap in symptoms. Thus, the findings suggest that the two constructs may be more similar than previously understood. Further, an increased understanding of the relationship between burnout and depression in sport may assist with prevention or screening, as well as contribute to more substantial treatment for burned out athletes.

Book excerpt: Research in sport psychology has identified some general reactions of collegiate student-athletes when meeting the academic requirements and sport performance demands of their institutions. Despite such awareness, limited information has been reported regarding: (a) the extent to which the day to day and longer range demands are considered as problematic and stressful for collegiate student-athletes; (b) how student-athletes cope with these situations; and (c) student-athletes' views on being provided support in managing their role as student and athlete. In an effort to obtain a more in depth understanding of these issues, a survey was created and distributed electronically to 550 student-athletes enrolled at an NCAA Division-1 college in Pennsylvania, with data being collected and used from 231 participants. Data for the entire sample was analyzed to identify areas of sport, school, and life that respondents found stressful, along with the coping mechanisms they used in their self management as student-athletes. Data was then analyzed based on gender, year in college, and sport. Out of the fifteen items included in the survey, twelve were rated as stressful by more than half of the participants. Although many items were rated as stressful, 5 out of the 12 items received moderate to extreme stress ratings. Specifically, not meeting their own expectations and grades received the highest stress ratings followed by pressure to win, balancing sport and academic demands, and being nervous before or during competition. In order to help manage these stressors, a majority of the student-athletes reported that they spend time with friends, take a break, exercise, and ask friends and family for advice, suggesting that they utilize both problem-focused and emotion-focused coping skills. Responses from the survey were used to create a set of guidelines for athletic department personnel and other professionals working with collegiate student-athletes in an effort to increase their understanding of stress and coping and how to further proceed in learning how to balance sport and academic demands.
