Anxieties relating to body image can be crippling across both genders, their debilitating effects sometimes leading to mental health problems. This important book is the first of its kind to focus specifically on adolescents, providing a comprehensive overview of the biological, psychological and socio-cultural factors relating to the development of body image. It also provides a detailed review of the measures which can be taken to address body dissatisfaction. Discussing the role of culture, family, peers, schools, sport and media in stimulating a negative body image, the book also examines the different challenges faced by girls and boys as they grow. Eating disorders and body change strategies are also addressed, as well as the challenges faced by youngsters affected by conditions causing visible differences, such as hair loss in cancer patients. The book also presents original research, including the results from a large Australian study of the body image and associated health behaviours of adolescent boys, and the results of a study of current teaching practices relating to body image. Adolescence and Body Image will be ideal reading for students and researchers from a variety of fields, including developmental, health, and social psychology, sociology, and cultural and health studies. Professionals working with young people, whether in education, health promotion or any other allied discipline will also find this book an invaluable resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a baffling, troubling, and hard to treat phenomenon that has increased markedly in recent years. Key issues in diagnosing and treating NSSI adequately include differentiating it from attempted suicide and other mental disorders, as well as understanding the motivations for self-injury and the context in which it occurs. This accessible and practical book provides therapists and students with a clear understanding of these key issues, as well as of suitable assessment techniques. It then goes on to delineate research-informed treatment approaches for NSSI, with an emphasis on functional assessment, emotion regulation, and problem solving, including motivational interviewing, interpersonal skills, CBT, DBT, behavioral management strategies, delay behaviors, exercise, family therapy, risk management, and medication, as well as how to successfully combine methods.

Book excerpt: Adolescence and young adulthood are periods of rapid development associated with significant psychological stress. While this has been implicated in a number of mental health concerns, it has not been investigated in body image disturbance. Specifically, body dissatisfaction is reported to peak during adolescence and persist into young adulthood. Despite the inclusion of stress management training in prevention programs for body image disturbance in adolescence, limited empirical efforts have aimed at understanding this specific relationship. As such, the current research program examines the relationship between stress and body dissatisfaction in female and male adolescents and young adults. Three studies were conducted assessing the following research questions: (a) the nature and direction of the relationship between stress and body dissatisfaction, including the differential role of stressor subdomains; (b) the role of moderating variables such as gender; (c) the role of mediating influences such as the psychological constructs of self-esteem, depressive symptoms and body importance; and (d) the relevance of stress to an additional body image dimension, body change strategies to decrease body size and increase muscularity. The research program utilised multiple methodologies to explore these research questions, including cross-sectional and longitudinal self-report surveys and experimental designs. Results across all three studies supported a strong link between stress and body dissatisfaction, specifically in the peer domain, in both females and males. Longitudinal self-report data supported a predictive relationship between adolescent stress and body dissatisfaction, and found that both self-esteem and body importance mediate this link proximally and over time. Experimental investigation in young adults also revealed support for a causal effect of interpersonal (peer-related) stress on state body dissatisfaction. Specifically, stress was revealed to enhance an individual's vulnerability to body image concerns, with males reporting general body dissatisfaction under a personality-based peer rejection condition, and those who placed a low importance on the body in self-evaluations reporting increased weight dissatisfaction under an appearance-based peer rejection condition. Young adult females generally reported dissatisfaction with the body regardless of the nature of interpersonal interactions. The research program did not display a significant association between stress and body change strategies to decrease body size or increase muscularity in adolescents. Taken together, the findings of the current research program support hypotheses that stress plays a predictive role in body dissatisfaction during adolescence and young adulthood for both females and males, and that this is particularly relevant to the peer domain. Furthermore, it appears to increase vulnerability to body image concerns through its relationship with self-esteem and appearance importance. These findings hold theoretical and clinical implications for models of body image and eating disorders, and suggest stress management modules tailored to the peer domain are a warranted inclusion in prevention programs in addition to self-esteem enhancement and reducing the importance of the body in self-evaluations. Limitations and future directions of the research program are also considered.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between body image and self-esteem among Lebanese adolescents. The study also aimed at examining age an d gender differences in terms of body image and self-esteem. The sample included 141 students from grades six, seven, eight, nine, and ten from one private scho ol in Beirut. The instrument used to measure body image satisfaction was the Multidimensional Body Self- Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) designed by Cash (2000). Self-esteem was measured by Harter Self Perception Profile for Adolescents (Harter 1988). St udents' ages were obtained from the school's records. The data obtained were ana lyzed using the SPSS for windows. Students' responses were reported and compared using multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and T tests. Results showed a positive relationship between body image and self-esteem among most of the subscales. In addition, no gender differences were shown on body ima ge, where as males had higher self-esteem than females on the following subscale s: Athletic Competence, Physical Appearance, and Romantic Attachment. Also, no s ignificant age differences were detected in terms of variables (the only differe nce was reported between age group 1 and 3 on Physical Appearance subscale). Bas ed on these results, implications and suggestions for further research were draw n.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of this volume at this time appears particularly auspi cious. Biological, psychological, and social change is greater during the pubertal years than at any other period since infancy. While the past two decades have witnessed a virtual explosion of productive research on the first years of life, until recently research on adolescence, and particularly on puberty and early adolescence, has lagged substantially behind. This book provides encouraging evidence that things are changing for the better. Considered separately, the individual chapters in this book include important contributions to our growing knowledge of the biological mechanisms involved in pubertal onset and subsequent changes, as well as of the psychological and social aspects of these changes, both as con sequences and determinants. In this regard, the book clearly benefits from the breadth of disciplines represented by the contributors, includ ing developmental endocrinology, adolescent medicine, pediatrics, psy chology, and sociology, among others.

Book excerpt: The relationship between self-esteem and body image has been well-established such that low levels of self-esteem have been found to be associated with body image concerns. The authors review previous research on the link between low self-esteem and body image concerns and then discuss more recent research concerning the importance of contingent self-esteem in this connection. The next chapter provides a discussion on the commonness of body dissatisfaction among contemporary Western young women and suggests re-embodiment as a means of transforming this experience. Chapter 3 explores the relationship between appearance satisfaction emotional overeating, experiences of racism and BMI among Black and African American women. Ethnic identity plays an important role in the self-concept related to feelings and attitudes. Chapter 4 explores the ethnic differences in self-esteem and body image among adolescents, as well as the need to address ethnicity in prevention programs. The remaining chapters of the book focus on body image in adolescent pregnancy; magazine image influence, extraversion and body image in college males; sociocultural factors, body image factors and self-esteem on school-age males and females, the perception of self-image in older people and how it changes throughout life; an examination of how the way woman perceive themselves influences the psychosexual impact on quality of life; and finally, how people can improve or develop a healthier investment in appearance.

Book excerpt: Western culture has increasingly valued physical appearance and in particular slenderness in the last 20 years. Unrealistic targets of thinness and excessive weight loss have led to eating disorders, the idea of obligatory exercise and other mental health problems. The concept of dissatisfaction with one's body image is driven home by images of ultra-thin models appearing in newspapers, magazines and television. This book brings together leading international research in this alarming and growing field.

Book excerpt: "This study was undertaken to assess body image and self-concepts in male and female adolescent cross-country runners. Runners were chosen as the study population because cross-country is a lean sport whereby the size of the body can impact performance. Participants were 175 high school runners including 93 boys (mean age 16 ±1.3 years; body mass index 20.4 ± 1.9) and 82 girls (mean age 15.7 ± 1.3 years; body mass index 20.3 ± 1.9). Participants completed a questionnaire packet comprised of a demographic questionnaire (including self-report of height and weight), the Body-Selflmage Questionnaire (BSIQ) to assess body image in nine different factors, and the Self- Perception Profile for Adolescents (SPPA) to assess self-concept in eight domains, plus global self-worth (self-esteem). The results showed that females were significantly less satisfied with a number of body image factors than males. Females also scored significantly less than males in the self-concept domains of athletic competence and physical appearance. Males and females rated different self-concept domains as the most important to them: Females valued close friendships as most important, while males valued job competence as nost important. Physical appearance and athletic competence were ranked relatively lower for both genders. On the other hand, the relationship of self- esteem to appearance-related factors or domains was stronger for females than for males; the females' self esteem was most closely related to physical appearance of all the eight domains. This correlation was significant for both sexes. The physical appearance domain ofthe SPPA correlated with the overall appearance factor ofthe BSIQ, with the association being stronger for females than for males. The females demonstrated more negative discrepancies than boys in many self-concept domains, suggesting that they were failing at aspects that were important in their lives. In spite of the sex differences, absolute scores obtained on the two instruments demonstrated favorable psychological profiles, not indicative of severe body image problems or eating disorders. However, these results question the different motives of the cross-country runners since athletic competence and physical appearance were ranked relatively low. These runners may not have been representative of serious distance runners. Implications from this study include that the gender differences between males and females, particularly with respect to appearance, need to be handled sensitively by coaches. Furthermore, the discrepancies in the female runners' self-concepts were present yet the females' competencies in the self- concepts were fairly high. This suggests that the girls in the study demonstrated perfectionist-like qualities in having high expectations in all aspects of their lives. Future research should address this notion further, since perfectionism has been recognized as a risk factor for eating disorders"--Document.

Book excerpt: Adolescence is a time when many experience challenges in life to which they have not been previously exposed. Complicating the transition to adolescence is the perception that they are "on stage" and everyone is watching and evaluating their transition through puberty (Woolfolk, 2019). Youth face the challenge of separating themselves from their parents, gaining more independence, and growing into their own identity (Erikson, 1968; Woolfolk, 2019). With this independence arises more reliance on peers, friends, and outside influences. They are faced with decisions to make about their postsecondary choice, career path, goal setting, body image issues, identity, sexual selves, and peer relationships. Gender differences in self-esteem have also been shown to emerge during adolescence, with girls displaying lower levels of self-esteem than their male peers (Impett, Sorsoli, Schooler, Henson, & Tolman, 2008). The emphasis on fitness, thinness, and outward beauty, increases the pressure on adolescents, specifically for this study, females to have the "perfect" body to fit with society ideals (Hartocollis, 2013). The study explored self-esteem, self-efficacy, life satisfaction, social comparison, and body image in 8th and 12th grade girls from a rural middle school and a rural high school in a mid-size Midwestern city. The study population included 97 participants among the two schools and utilized a cross-sectional design, causal-comparative. Survey results indicated 12th grade girls do not have higher self-esteem, life satisfaction, or self-efficacy and reported lower "how I look" and "how I feel" body image than 8th grade girls. However, 12th grade girls reported engaging in social comparison less than 8th grade girls. It is significant that girls in the study who reported school-based curriculum exposure to nutrition, goal setting, and respecting their sexual selves reported higher life satisfaction, self-esteem, and self-efficacy. The girls also reported engaging in less social comparison. The results from this study indicated the need and strong support for intentional school-based curricula. Self-esteem, self-efficacy, body image and social comparison are factors in life satisfaction and should be addressed as part of a comprehensive, standards based social-emotional curriculum.
