Book excerpt: The studies on the phenomena of fatigue in metals, and especially on the formation and growth rate of cracks have been conducted in 1972-1974 with continued intensity. Their results contribute to expanding our knowledge and give us a new insight into the sphere of metal fatigue which is a highly interdiscipline field. This makes the continuous amending and modifying of books on metal fatigue a necessity, unfortunately often related with the not easy task of changing one's opinions and critical analysis of established earlier notions. These aims were my chief concern when preparing the present edition of my book in which I made use of carefully selected new information from 1972-1973 and partly 1974 reports. This new matter has been included in many instances just to signal new facts or findings, since the limited space did not allow me to give them the amount of consideration they deserve. The book has been further supplemented with the results of micrographic studies conducted in co-operation with J. Kozubowski for which lowe him special thanks. I am also indebted to Mr. H. Mughrabi from Stuttgart for allowing me to publish in this book his very interesting micrographs of dislocation structures. Finally I should like to express my sincere thanks to Mr. E. Lepa for his concern in producing a good English translation of my book.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue failure is a multi-stage process. It begins with the initiation of cracks, and with continued cyclic loading the cracks propagate, finally leading to the rupture of a component or specimen. The demarcation between the above stages is not well-defined. Depending upon the scale of interest, the variation may span three orders of magnitude. For example, to a material scientist an initiated crack may be of the order of a micron, whereas for an engineer it can be of the order of a millimetre. It is not surprising therefore to see that investigation of the fatigue process has followed different paths depending upon the scale of phenomenon under investigation. Interest in the study of fatigue failure increased with the advent of industrial ization. Because of the urgent need to design against fatigue failure, early investiga tors focused on prototype testing and proposed failure criteria similar to design formulae. Thus, a methodology developed whereby the fatigue theories were proposed based on experimental observations, albeit at times with limited scope. This type of phenomenological approach progressed rapidly during the past four decades as closed-loop testing machines became available.
Book Synopsis An Investigation of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Mild Steel Sheet Subjected to Cyclic Bending by : Bryan R. Long
Download or read book An Investigation of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Mild Steel Sheet Subjected to Cyclic Bending written by Bryan R. Long and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted to determine the rate of fatigue crack growth in terms of the applied stress and current crack length in mild steel sheet subjected to cyclic bending stresses, which were induced by resonant vibration. It was found that the rate of extension was proportional to the fourth power of the range of applied stress and was influenced by the value of the mean stress. It was also found that, for constant stress cycles, the rate of crack propagation was a constant; this was in agreement with the Weibull theory of crack propagation. As a consequence of the tests it was found that a fatigue crack did not appreciably reduce the resonant frequency of the test beams until the crack had progressed most of the way across the specimen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasizes applications of fracture mechanics to prevent fracture and fatigue failures in structures, rather than the theoretical aspects of fracture mechanics. The concepts of driving force and resistance force are used to differentiate between the mathematical side and the materials side. Case studies of actual failures are new to the third edition. Book Synopsis Crack Propagation in Low-cycle Fatigue of Mild Steel by : Stanley Theodore Rolfe
Download or read book Crack Propagation in Low-cycle Fatigue of Mild Steel written by Stanley Theodore Rolfe and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made of crack propagation in low-cycle fatigue of mild-steel plate specimens and has indicated that during crack propagation the type of loading cycle will affect markedly the fatigue behavior. Several types of reversed loading cycles have been included in the investi gation, namely constant load, reduced loads and constant stress. In the constant-load tests the stress increases throughout the test as the crack propagates, and the rate of crack propagation continuously increases. If the load range is reduced throughout a test (reduced-load test) so as to produce constant net-section stresses, the rate of crack growth will decrease throughout the test. (Author).
