Book excerpt: The main objective of this research is to theoretically investigate the physics of various optical phase conjugation processes (e.g., four-wave mixing, stimulated Brillouin scattering, photorefractive self- or mutually pumped phase conjugators) in nonlinear optical media (photorefractive crystals, optical fibers, etc.), and to explore theoretically and/or experimentally various kinks of applications of optical phase conjugation and nonlinear optical processes.

Book excerpt: Optical phase conjugation, or time reversal, of an optical wave front is an important technique to correct distortions in electromagnetic waves which are built up during propagation through a medium. The authors have studied theoretically optical phase conjugation through four-wave mixing in a slab of non-linear material. When two strong counter-propagating laser beams irradiate a non-linear crystal, the third-order susceptibility is activated, and can couple to an external weak probe field. A four-wave mixing process then generates a phase-conjugated or time-reversed replica of this incident probe field. They investigated the mechanism of the production of phase-conjugated radiation in such a configuration by solving the non-linear Maxwell equations for the electric field. The electric field in the material satisfies a set of two coupled wave equations, which couple positive and negative frequency components of the electric field. It is shown that the polarisation of the pumps and the tensorial nature of the interaction can be accounted for by a simple polarisation operator in the wave equations. Maxwell's equations for the field in the layer admit plane-wave solutions, although the dispersion relations are very different from the usual linear relation between the frequency and the wave number. The coupling between the two waves exhibits a strong resonance near the frequency of the pump beams. These plane-wave modes can be matched across the boundaries of the layer to the probe field. The response of the material can then be expressed in terms of Fresnel reflection and transmission coefficients for both s- and p-polarisation. We have derived simple matrix equations for the set of Fresnel coefficients, which can be solved numerically, and the have also obtained closed-form analytical solutions for the various Fresnel coefficients. It is indicated that our solutions reduce to earlier results in the appropriate limits.

Book excerpt: We demonstrated the first cw phase-conjugating mirror with gain, and made a self-oscillating resonator which emitted a diffraction-limited optical beam while severe phase aberration was present in the resonator. We demonstrated storable and erasable phase-conjugate images in the nanosecond regime by a one-photon photorefractive process. We achieved the first demonstration of a wide angle (approx. 45 deg.) narrowband approx. 1/10 cm) optical filter using phase conjugation. We achieved the first demonstration of full vector-wave phase-conjugation by which an image was restored after double-passing a birefringent phase aberrator. We demonstrated edge-enhancement of an optical phase-conjugate image in real time. Studies of resonant nonlinear refraction and phase conjugation in sodium vapor continued. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear optics has been a rapidly growing field in recent decades. It is based on the study of effects and phenomena related to the interaction of intense coherent light radiation with matter. Physics of Nonlinear Optics describes various major nonlinear optical effects, including physical principles, experimental techniques, up-to-date research achievements, and current or potential applications. This book features clear conceptual descriptions, concise formulations, and emphasizes both theoretical and experimental aspects of nonlinear optics. The readability of this book is particularly enhanced by a series of color photographs showing the spectacular appearances of various nonlinear optical effects. Both authors of this book are outstanding research scientists renowned in their professional areas. Their major research achievements in nonlinear optics include the pioneering studies of two-wave-coupled refractive-index change, Raman-enhanced self-focusing, optical-frequency Pockels effect, stimulated Kerr scattering, optical phase-conjugation via backward stimulated emission, and two-photon-absorption based optical limiting, stabilization and reshaping.

Book excerpt: This work provides a convincing motivation for and introduction to magnon-based computing. The challenges faced by the conventional semiconductor-transistor-based computing industry are contrasted with the many exciting avenues for developing spin waves (or magnons) as a complementary technology wherein information can be encoded, transmitted, and operated upon: essential ingredients for any computing paradigm. From this general foundation, one particular operation is examined: phase conjugation via four-wave-mixing (FWM). The author constructs an original theory describing the generation of a phase conjugate mirror with the remarkable property that any incident spin wave will be reflected back along the same direction of travel. After establishing a theoretical framework, the careful design of the experiment is presented, followed by the demonstration of a magnetic phase conjugate mirror using four-wave mixing for the first time. The thesis concludes with an investigation into the unexpected fractal behaviour observed arising from the phase conjugate mirror – a result that is testament to the richness and vibrancy of these highly nonlinear spin wave systems.

Book excerpt: This book has been prompted by our des ire to share with others our apprecia tion of the harmony and beauty in a particular sphere of modern optics known as "optical phase conjugation". Practical applications of the phase conjugated wave are likely to be far-reaching. Optical phase conjugation (OPC) combines in itself aesthetic and pragmatic attractiveness, a synthesis that has made OPC a subject of general attention. The figure presents the ap proximate rate of publications (number of articles per year) on OPC in the world literature for recent years, the lower curve denoting the work carried out in the USSR. The efforts of a large unofficial international collective have yielded an impressive result. 150 100 50 1975 1980 At present, the physical pro ces ses underlying various OPC methods are quite understandable, and it is the physics of OPC to which our book is devoted. Practical and scientific applications of phase-conjugated waves, which are of no less interest, have been touched upon in short, as major achievements in this sphere are a matter of the future. Today there are two main methods of OPC: i) by backward stimulated light scattering, ii) by four-wave mixing. Naturally, much attention is given to these methods in our book which, after the introductory Chap. 1, can be divided into two almost independent parts - Chaps. 2 - 5, and Chaps. 6 - 8.

We chose not to await the maturation of the field, but instead to provide this material in time to be useful in its development. We have tried very hard to elucidate and interrelate the various nonlinear phenomena which can be used for optical phase conjugation.

During this reporting period we have (1) extended our set of exact focused-pulse solutions of Maxwell's equations in vacuum, (2) discovered a new two-photon resonance in the fullerene C60, (3) measured excited- state cross-sections in protonic-doped bis-benzothiazole (4) developed a nonlinear interferometer which measures phase, as well as magnitude, of certain nonlinear optical susceptibilities, and (5) completed our experimental and theoretical demonstration of the first clear example of a strongly-coupled large polaron.

Book excerpt: Optical Nonlinearities and Instabilities in Semiconductors deals with various aspects of nonlinear optical phenomena and related optical instabilities in semiconductors. Measurements and explanations of the optical nonlinearities of various semiconductor materials and structures are presented, along with optical bistability and diode laser thresholds; self-oscillations; and chaos. This text consists of 17 chapters and begins with an introductory chapter to the historical background of investigations of the resonance-enhanced nonlinear optical properties of semiconductors and their manifestations in optical instabilities. The discussion then turns to the experimentally observed optical nonlinearities in homogeneous semiconductors and the microscopic theory of the optical band edge nonlinearities. This book considers the studies of the spectral region close to the band gap meant to exploit the resonance enhancement of the nonlinear optical behavior. The remaining chapters focus on nonlinear optical properties of semiconductor quantum wells; dense nonequilibrium excitations in gallium arsenide; optical decay and spatial relaxation; and optical bistability in semiconductor laser amplifiers. A chapter that describes instabilities in semiconductor lasers concludes the book. This book is intended for research students and active research workers who are interested in the basic physics or in the device applications of optical nonlinearities and instabilities in semiconductors.
