In the present work, the control of magnets by magnetoelastic anisotropy is investigated within the context of nanoscale magnetoelectric composite systems. These magnetoelectric composites are artificial multiferroic materials which exhibit both a coexistence and coupling of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric ordering. This device architecture provides a route to control magnetism with electric fields via the application of mechanical stress. In the present work, magnetization behavior under mechanical stress of various magnetically coupled systems is investigated using both advanced computer simulations and experimental work. The application of voltage-controlled strain is shown to influence dipole coupled nanomagnet arrays and antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic (AFM-FM) spontaneous exchange bias systems, which present pathways to engineered systems. Furthermore, the repeatable nature of these experiments presents unambiguous deterministic voltage control for both dipole-coupled systems and spontaneous exchange bias systems. The experimental results are confirmed by multiple characterization techniques, including superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry (SQUID) and magneto optic Kerr effect magnetometry (MOKE). This work thus provides significant evidence of the viability of magnetoelastic anisotropy as a means to control magnetoelectric heterostructures in future computing devices.

Book excerpt: Multiferroics is a field that has rapidly garnered much interest in the past several years because of its establishment of a new unconventional class of electromagnetic devices. By capitalizing on a special class of material systems that have coupled magnetic and electrical properties, multiferroics offer unique possibilities for micromagnetic devices because of their ability to control magnetization with electric fields (and vice versa). Strain-coupled multiferroic composites, in particular, are promising because their magnetoelectric coupling is many orders-of-magnitude stronger than single-phase multiferroic materials. Telecommunication systems utilize dynamic magnetic processes for many applications, such as filters, nonreciprocal components, and electrically small antennas. These devices rely on electromagnetic waves for transduction, limiting their sizes and constraining their usage. Strain-coupled multiferroic composites utilize mechanical waves, leading to a five order-of-magnitude reduction in characteristic length and opening the door to device miniaturization. The dynamics of multiferroic coupling can be characterized into several different regimes that depend on the magnetic state of the composite (multi- or single domain) and the actuation frequency (relative to the domain wall relaxation and the ferromagnetic resonance frequencies). Miniaturization of dynamic magnetic devices relies on the thorough study of multiferroic coupling in these different regimes. In this work, the dynamics of multiferroic coupling in three different regimes are investigated. A variety of micro-scale piezoelectric devices are designed and fabricated to investigate coupling in each of these regimes. First, resonant cantilevers are used to study dynamic actuation in the regime of quasi-static domain wall motion. It is found that nonlinearity in this regime can lead to doubling of the actuation force frequency, a useful phenomenon for low noise electromagnetic characterization. Second, damping in thin film bulk acoustic resonators in a multi-domain state near ferromagnetic resonance is investigated, and the effect of the domain structure on the power absorption at resonance is characterized. Finally, the perturbations of acoustic Lamb waves caused by a single domain magnetic thin film are studied at frequencies above ferromagnetic resonance. Interactions with spin waves are found to lead to an angular dependence in the magneto-acoustic absorption. These results demonstrate several unique aspects of dynamic multiferroic coupling across different regimes and can be readily capitalized to develop novel micro-scale devices for telecommunication systems.

In recent research and developments in integrating single-phase ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials, multiferroic composite demonstrated a promising magnetoelectric (ME) coupling for future applications. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique, on the other hand, allows fabrications of complex multiferroic nanostructures to investigate interfacial coupling between the two materials. In this work, radical-enhanced ALD of cobalt ferrite (CFO) and thermal ALD of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) were combined in fabricating complex multiferroic architectures in investigating the effect of nanostructuring and magnetic shape anisotropy on improving ME coupling. In particular, 1D CFO nanotubes and nanowires; 0D-3D CFO/PZT mesoporous composite; and 1D-1D CFO/PZT core-shell nanowire composite were studied. The potential implementation of nanostructured multiferroic composites into functioning devices was assessed by quantifying the converse ME coupling coefficient. The synthesis of 1D CFO nanostructures was realized by ALD of CFO in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes. This work provided a simple and inexpensive route to create parallel and high aspect ratio (~55) magnetic nanostructures. The change in magnetic easy axis of (partially filled) CFO nanotubes from perpendicular to parallel in (fully-filled) nanowires indicated the significance of the geometric factor in controlling magnetizations and ME coupling. The 0D-3D CFO/PZT mesoporous composite demonstrated the optimizations of the strain transfer could be achieved by precise thickness control. 100 nm of mesoporous PZT was synthesized on Pt/TiOx/SiO2/Si using amphiphilic diblock copolymers as a porous ferroelectric template (10 nm pore diameter) for ALD CFO growth. The increased filling of CFO decreased the mechanical flexibility of the composite for electric field induced strain, hence the converse ME coupling was mitigated. The highest converse ME coefficient of 1.2 10-5 Oe-cm/mV was achieved with a 33% pore filling of CFO, in compare to 1 i 10-5 Oe-cm/mV from mesoporous CFO filled with 3 nm of PZT in literature (Chien 2016). Highly directional 1D-1D PZT-core CFO-shell composite in AAO demonstrated the magnetic shape anisotropy could be modulated. The CFO shell thickness allowed the tuning of magnetic easy axis and saturation magnetizations; whereas the PZT volume allowed the optimization of electric field induced strain of the composite. Enhanced converse ME coupling of 1.3 i 10-4 Oe-cm/mV was realized by 5 nm CFO shell on 30 nm of PZT core. In summary, the work has demonstrated nanostructuring of multiferroic composite is an effective pathway to engineer converse ME coupling through optimizations of magnetic shape anisotropy and interfacial strain transfer.

Abstract: Multiferroics which combine two or more order parameters of ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism and ferroelasticity, have drawn great interests in the past few years due to their promising potential of application in sensors, transducers, spintronics and multistate memories. Coupling between the ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism renders the induction of an electric polarization P upon applying a magnetic field, or the induction of a magnetization M upon applying an electric field which is called magnetoelectric coupling effect. There are single phase multiferroics which simultaneously possess ferroelectricity and magnetism in nature. However, these natural multiferroics only exhibit weak magnetoelectric coupling effect at very low temperature which hinders the practical applications. An alternative and more promising choice is to fabricate multiferroic composites. In the multiferroic composite systems, large magnetoelectric coupling effects can be produced indirectly from the strain-mediated interaction even at room temperature and great design flexibility can be obtained. In the present study, two types of multiferroic composite nanostructures are investigated: the vertical heteroepitaxial multiferroic thin films and film-on-substrate heterogeneous bilayers with incorporation of various influences, such as film thickness, misfit strains and flexoelectricity. Since the first fabrication of vertical epitaxial multiferroic nanostructures, great scientific interests have been attracted for the potential large magnetoelectric effects arising from the relaxed substrate constraint and large interfacial area between the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic phases. A three dimensional phase field model is devised to precisely describe the complex strain state of this nanostructure. The simulation results demonstrate that both film thickness and misfit strains are important in determining the magnitude of magnetoelectric effect. Due to the strong strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling effect in film-on-substrate system with a ferromagnetic thin film directly growing on a thick ferroelectric substrate, precision electric control of local ferromagnetism, i.e. ferromagnetic domain pattern and domain wall properties, are achievable. The results show that the domain pattern of the ferroelectric substrate can be fully transferred onto the as-deposited ferromagnetic thin film. High stability of the magnetic domain is observed when the system is subjected to an external magnetic field. Under an applied electric field, the transferred domain pattern in magnetic film can be either maintained or erased depending on the direction of applied electric field. Moreover, when a pulse of in-plane electric field is applied, the magnetic domain wall motion can be observed in concurrence with the ferroelectric domain wall motion. With the decrease of material size, some effects that can be neglected in bulk materials may play an important role on the overall properties of material, such as flexoelectric effects which describe the induction of polarization from strain gradient. A two dimensional phase field model is adopted to study the influence of flexoelectric effects on the epitaxial ferroelectric films. Understanding the strength of the coupling of ferroic properties in composite solids and the roles of size, shape, and arrangement of the constituent phases is central to realizing high-performance magnetoelectrics and their applications. Nanoscale magnetoelectric materials are excellent candidate systems to study the aforementioned effects of shape and finite size, to meet the growing demand for faster, more efficient, low cost, and above all smaller device components for use in advanced magnetic memories, actuators, transducers, and sensors. Nanoscale materials offer increased interfacial surface area compared with bulk, making them appealing in the design of an enhanced magnetoelectric composite because the magnetoelectric effect in a composite system is driven by interfacial coupling mechanisms. However, nanoscale (approximately 100 nm or less) ferroic materials often exhibit a dimensionality-dependent suppression of ferroic and piezoelectric properties below a critical size. By controlling e.g. the surface chemical environment, introducing strain engineering of films through epitaxy or through the shape of a nanostructure, the ferroelectric phase stability can be tuned for a given material and temperature. In this dissertation nanoscale ferroic and multiferroic properties were investigated, highlighting five characteristic systems: ferromagnetic nanoparticles, ferroelectric nanocubes, extrinsic magnetoelectric nanowires, and resonant beams and resonant membranes. An experimental study of ferromagnetic nanoparticles is presented to underscore the importance of understanding the growth and interfacial coupling mechanisms in ferromagnetic nanoparticle systems. To investigate the finite-size driven ferroelectric phase transition at the nanoscale, the functional properties of individual ferroelectric nanocubes of varying sizes were measured at elevated temperature using local ferroelectric piezoelectric amplitude and phase switching analysis. Experimental evidence of the direct magnetoelectric effect within a single integrated nanostructure is presented. The synthesis, fabrication, and functional property characterization of highly tunable magnetoelectric coupling within individual multiferroic nanowires is described. The direct magnetoelectric response is distinctively enhanced by extreme curvature of the ferroelectric shell in relation to planar heterostructures, the geometric dominance of the interface as a fraction of the total volume of the nanowire, and magnetic shape anisotropy of the ferromagnetic nanowire core. This study of geometry aided direct magnetoelectric coupling can help the development of a future study and design of a magnetoelectric proximity sensor. One solution to address the issues associated with current magnetic field sensors, such as cost, durability, and detection range, is to develop a mesoscale magnetoelectric resonator device. Magnetoelectric resonator structures have a resonant frequency which will shift in the presence of an applied magnetic field due to the magnetostrictive properties of the ferromagnetic material. The resonator detection range can be tuned by pre-straining the piezoelectric layer. Two suggested resonator designs which are promising candidates for magnetic field proximity sensors are the fixed-fixed beam design and the membrane design.

Book excerpt: Using the nano metric resolution of atomic force microscopy techniques, this work explores the rich fundamental physics and novel functionalities of domain walls in ferroelectric materials, the nano scale interfaces separating regions of differently oriented spontaneous polarization. Due to the local symmetry-breaking caused by the change in polarization, domain walls are found to possess an unexpected lateral piezoelectric response, even when this is symmetry-forbidden in the parent material. This has interesting potential applications in electromechanical devices based on ferroelectric domain patterning. Moreover, electrical conduction is shown to arise at domain walls in otherwise insulating lead zirconate titanate, the first such observation outside of multiferroic bismuth ferrite, due to the tendency of the walls to localize defects. The role of defects is then explored in the theoretical framework of disordered elastic interfaces possessing a characteristic roughness scaling and complex dynamic response. It is shown that the heterogeneous disorder landscape in ferroelectric thin films leads to a breakdown of the usual self-affine roughness, possibly related to strong pinning at individual defects. Finally, the roles of varying environmental conditions and defect densities in domain switching are explored and shown to be adequately modelled as a competition between screening effects and pinning.
