Book excerpt: Controlling turbulence is an important issue for a number of technological applications. Several methods to modulate turbulence are currently being investigated. All of them are based on the introduction of some sort of perturbation into the flow field which affect turbulence coherent structures responsible for turbulence transfer mechanisms. The scope of the book is to describe several aspects of turbulence structure and modulation and to explain and discuss the most promising techniques in detail.

Some, but not all previous studies suggest that a large-scale, stationary array of counter-rotating vortices exists within the turbulent boundary layer on a concave wall. The objective of the present study was to obtain a qualitative model of the flow field in order to increase our understanding of the underlying physics. A large free-surface water channel was constructed in order to perform a visual study of the flow. Streamwise components of mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured using a hot film anemometer. The upstream boundary was spanwise uniform with a momentum thickness to radius of curvature of 0.05. Compared to flat wall flow, large-scale, randomly distributed sweeps and ejections were seen in the boundary layer on the concave wall. The sweeps appear to suppress the normal mechanism for turbulence production near the wall by inhibiting the bursting process. The ejections appear to enhance turbulence production in the outer layers as the low speed fluid convected from regions near the wall interacts with the higher speed fluid farther out. The large-scale structures did not occur at fixed spanwise locations, and could not be called roll cells or vortices. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liutex and Its Applications in Turbulence Research reviews the history of vortex definition, provides an accurate mathematical definition of vortices, and explains their applications in flow transition, turbulent flow, flow control, and turbulent flow experiments. The book explains the term "Rortex" as a mathematically defined rigid rotation of fluids or vortex, which could help solve many longstanding problems in turbulence research. The accurate mathematical definition of the vortex is important in a range of industrial contexts, including aerospace, turbine machinery, combustion, and electronic cooling systems, so there are many areas of research that can benefit from the innovations described here. This book provides a thorough survey of the latest research in generalized and flow-thermal, unified, law-of-the-wall for wall-bounded turbulence. Important theory and methodologies used for developing these laws are described in detail, including: the classification of the conventional turbulent boundary layer concept based on proper velocity scaling; the methodology for identification of the scales of velocity, temperature, and length needed to establish the law; and the discovery, proof, and strict validations of the laws, with both Reynolds and Prandtl number independency properties using DNS data. The establishment of these statistical laws is important to modern fluid mechanics and heat transfer research, and greatly expands our understanding of wall-bounded turbulence. This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanwise wall-oscillation is a promising drag reduction technique in turbulent flows. A major factor in drag reduction is the effect of the oscillations on the boundary layer coherent structures, and particularly the weakening of the near-wall streaks. This thesis studies the streaks in various wall oscillations configurations, based on a linear approach to the turbulent flow. The two main aspects are the study of the structures themselves, and an attempt to predict drag. The streak structure is studied mainly in turbulent channel flow subject to harmonic wall forcing, using an optimal perturbation technique. It is shown that the streaks have an angle to the main flow direction, which is almost constant during half an oscillation period and experiences a jump in sign and magnitude twice per period. The linear theory shows that this phenomenon is due to the existence of a structure which is dominant during half a period and has a constant angle. Other features of the linear optimal perturbations are studied, such as their comparison with conditionally averaged turbulent structures. In order to predict drag, the optimal perturbation approach is found to be unsuitable. A more appropriate technique is to use the linearised Navier-Stokes equation subject to random forcing. This was done for a turbulent channel flow subject to travelling wave wall oscillations, thus offering a wide range of comparison with direct numerical simulations, including known regions of drag reduction and drag increase. The main finding is that in the area where drag increase is observed in turbulent flow, the linear operator is unstable. In area where the operator is stable, drag reduction is always predicted. These two topics are the core of this thesis. Other aspects include the derivation and implementation of an optimal perturbation algorithm and a linear solver. Certain theoretical aspects of the optimal perturbation approach were also investigated.

Book excerpt: The book provides the theoretical fundamentals on turbulence and a complete overview of turbulence models, from the simplest to the most advanced ones including Direct and Large Eddy Simulation. It mainly focuses on problems of modeling and computation, and provides information regarding the theory of dynamical systems and their bifurcations. It also examines turbulence aspects which are not treated in most existing books on this subject, such as turbulence in free and mixed convection, transient turbulence and transition to turbulence. The book adopts the tensor notation, which is the most appropriate to deal with intrinsically tensor quantities such as stresses and strain rates, and for those who are not familiar with it an Appendix on tensor algebra and tensor notation are provided.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the mathematical techniques for turbulence control in a form suitable for inclusion in an engineering degree program at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels whilst also making it useful to researchers and industrial users of the concepts. It uses a mix of theory, computation and experimental results to present and illustrate the methodologies. It is based on the three part structure, wall turbulence, open loop control and feedback control with emphasis on optimal control methodologies. The book also includes an introduction of basic principles and fundamentals followed by a chapter on the structure of wall turbulence with emphasis on coherent structures. Elsewhere there is focus on control methods of wall turbulence by manipulating the boundaries though their motion and by applying control forces throughout the flow volume. The last two chapters will describe the linear and non-linear optimal controls. This integrated approach will help not only researchers interested in the topic but also graduate or advanced undergraduate students in their course work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wall turbulence is encountered in many technological applications as well as in the atmosphere, and a detailed understanding leading to its management would have considerable beneficial consequences in many areas. A lot of inspired work by experimenters, theoreticians, engineers and mathematicians has been accomplished over recent decades on this important topic and Statistical Approach to Wall Turbulence provides an updated and integrated view on the progress made in this area. Wall turbulence is a complex phenomenon that has several industrial applications, such as in aerodynamics, turbomachinery, geophysical flows, internal engines, etc. Several books exist on fluid turbulence, but Statistical Approach to Wall Turbulence is original in the sense that it focuses solely on the turbulent flows bounded by solid boundaries. The book covers the different physical aspects of wall turbulence, beginning with classical phenomenological aspects before advancing to recent research in the effects of the Reynolds numbers, near wall coherent structures, and wall turbulent transport process. This book would be of interest to postgraduate and undergraduate students in mechanical, chemical, and aerospace engineering, as well as researchers in aerodynamics, combustion, and all applications of wall turbulence.
