Book excerpt: The Battle of the Little Bighorn remains one of history’s most famous and most controversial events. Lieutenant Colonel George Custer, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, the Seventh Cavalry, the Sioux, and the Cheyenne were all there on June 25th, 1876. This battle, which was a shocking disaster for the U.S. army and a triumph for Native Americans, continues to fascinate us more than 125 years later. Often when people are shocked by an unexpected event, they want to understand exactly why and how it happened. In the case of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, these questions have yet to be answered completely satisfactorily, due to the lack of totally definitive evidence regarding some of the details. As a result, some controversy still surrounds the battle. A Day to Remember introduces the reader to the many aspects of this battle. The author makes use of eyewitness testimony, battle analyses, Custer’s personality traits, and a comparison with other disasters, in order to give the reader a basic understanding of the battle and to provide a basis for further exploration of this fascinating historic event.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer died at the hands of Native Americans by the banks of the Little Bighorn in Montana 25th June 1876. This is an established undisputed fact. What is disputed is the real reason that he died. So forget all you have been led to believe and begin to learn the truth. George Custer was anathema to his superiors, but the populace loved him. If he were to stand for president in the coming elections there was a strong possibility that he would win. Neither William T. Sherman nor ‘Little Phil’ Sheridan could allow that to happen. Thus, they conspired to put Custer in a position in the field where the opposing Sioux and Cheyenne were stronger and could deliver the ‘Coup de Gras’. This is the second of two books dealing with the circumstances that arose leading the Native Americans on a collision course with the US Army that fateful day and the death of a national hero. Subsequently the conspiracy is uncovered and shows how these men used their powers and positions and so deftly covered their tracks. Perhaps, but not quite. 30 years of diligent research has uncovered the truth in this groundbreaking history. Unmissable and shocking, dare you not read this surprising revelation.

Book excerpt: The Seventh United States Cavalry, under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer, was composed of twelve companies at the Battle of the Little Big Horn River on June 25, 1876. Custer’s plan of attack required that he divide his regiment by splitting the companies into three separate battalions. These battalions would be commanded by Major Marcus Reno (A,G,M), Captain Fredrick Benteen (D,H,K), and Custer (C,E,F,I,L). Company B, under Captain Thomas McDougall, was detailed to guard the pack train. Reno’s orders were to take his battalion and “Charge the village and you will be supported by the whole outfit.” That didn’t happen. Almost everyone has heard of “Custer’s Last Stand” in one form or another, but are surprised to learn that only five companies of the regiment were actually defeated by the Sioux and Cheyenne warriors. The surviving companies of Reno’s and Benteen’s Battalions, plus, Company B and the pack train, not only survived a three-day siege, but also had a very compelling story to tell. This, then, is the story of one of those surviving companies, Company A, commanded by Captain Myles Moylan. More than that, it is the personal story of the men in that company and their experiences down in the valley and up on the bluffs, along the Little Big Horn River on June 25, 26, and 27, 1876.

For years the shadow of blame for the defeat has been cast upon Custer. What role did his subordinates play in the battle? Did they contribute to the Custer failure, or was he the only one to blame? In Custer's Shadow presents the complex life of Major Marcus Reno, Custer's second-in-command. Employing photographs and maps to help the reader visualize the text, Ronald H. Nichols unravels the controversy surrounding Reno's role in the battle and questions the scrutiny to which he was subjected in the years following.

Book excerpt: Following the discovery of gold deposits, in December 1875 the US Government ordered the indigenous population of the Black Hills in what is now South Dakota and Wyoming, the Sioux, to return to the Great Sioux Reservation. When the Sioux refused, the US Army sent forces into the area, sparking a conflict that would make Lieutenant Colonel George Custer, Chief Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, and others household names around the world. Examining a series of engagements in the Black Hills War, including Rosebud, Little Bighorn, and Slim Buttes, this fully illustrated study assesses the forces fighting on both sides in this momentous campaign, casting light on the origins, tactics, armament, and battlefield performance of the US Cavalry and their Sioux opponents at the height of the Indian Wars.
