Book excerpt: Smoking: A Behavioral Analysis is written by two experimental social psychologists. It focuses on the psychological aspect of smoking and the effects that role-playing has on it. Comprised of two parts, the first part deals with the reasons that people begin and continue smoking, the environmental and intra-individual support for smoking, the relationship of these supports, and the values and expectations concerning the effects of smoking. The second part details an experiment that uses role-playing to induce a change in smoking. It includes the background, design, procedure, and the implications of the experiment in the research and control of smoking. The book is a valuable reference for psychologists, medical doctors, experts, and lay people interested in smoking, smoking cessation, and the relationship of behavior to this habit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social smoking is a phenomenon in the young adult population, one that is poorly understood. This study was a secondary analysis of data from a cross-sectional survey of a random sample of college smokers. The study investigated differences in undergraduate college smoking groups (social smoking versus non-social smoking) with regard to motivation to quit, rate of smoking, and perceived smoking status. This study also investigated the utility of seven predictors in classifying smoking groups. These predictors included depression, social support, self-esteem, neuroticism anxiety, impulsive sensation seeking, physical and psychological dependence. Results revealed that 71% of 353 current (past 30-day) smokers reported social smoking. The study provided the following results to the research questions: (a) no significant difference was found in motivation to quit between smoking groups (social smoking versus non-social smoking; (b) a significant difference was found in the number of days smoked, and the number of cigarettes smoked on those days between smoking groups; (c) there was a significant difference in perceived smoking status (smoker versus not a smoker) between smoking groups, more social smokers than expected did not perceive themselves as smokers; (d) logistic regression analysis revealed that physical dependence, psychological dependence, and social support were significant predictors in correctly classifying individuals into smoking groups (74.3%). The study used cognitive dissonance theory to explain the results. This exploratory study took a step toward developing a further understanding of social smoking in college. This may help college health officials develop targeted interventions for this group.
