Book excerpt: Expectations of parental involvement in a student’s collegiate experience are grounded in the opportunities presented during the 13 years of the student’s K-12 schooling. However, due to legal implications and informed by college student development theories, higher education administrators often deterred parental involvement. This research focused on the parents’ perceptions of their involvement their first-time-in-college (FTIC) students’ first year of college. The researcher utilized the 261 survey responses from parents of FTIC students at Large Research University (LRU). The intent of the research was to contribute to literature regarding parental involvement with their college students. The collected data included parents’ perceptions, as the dependent variables, regarding (a) their personal involvement, (b) appropriate involvement, (c) expected involvement, and (d) the university’s involvement. Additionally, collected data about the parents’ characteristics served as the independent variables for the analyses. The analyses rendered significant differences in parents’ perceptions of their involvement based on the parents’ ethnicity, if the parent had a first-generation college student, and their students’ residence in their first year of college. Parents, who identified as White, responded with perceptions of less involvement compared to other ethnicities. Alternatively, parents of first-generation college students and parents with a student residing at home held perceptions of more involvement. There were significant, positive correlations between parents’ perceptions of their involvement and the number of hours the parent anticipated communicating with their student and the parent’s anticipated number of visits to the student’s college. The insight gathered from this completed research was informative for educational leaders in higher education concerning the involvement of parents in students’ collegiate experience. Educational leaders can apply the knowledge proactively to inform their policies, procedures, and practices.

Universities and administrators alike should value this information to help them better understand the student-parent relationship in college. It is important to comprehend this so that when colleges and universities seek to include parents in their students' college experience, they can use past and present research to develop plausible solutions. The bodies of literature and the results of this study help create a link between the research questions and conceptual framework. The literature focuses on several main topic areas, including student satisfaction measures, Generation Y, parental involvement, perceptions of parental involvement, college transition, and the first-year experience. The examination of the literature allows for the development of four main research questions and subquestions addressing parental involvement as it relates to student satisfaction. Data for this study included a sample of 4,340 undergraduate-level students at a southeastern university. T tests, regression, and Chi-square were used to analyze the data and provide results for the four main research questions. The researcher found through analysis of the data that a relationship existed between parental involvement and student satisfaction. The results of the t tests also showed that significance existed between certain demographic groups for items under college choice, social experience, and academic experience.

However, these findings are not congruent with the perceptions of every parent. For example, several parents reported that as their children become older, their level of involvement should decrease, while other parents felt as if their non-involvement will not have an effect either way on their child's academic performance. The focus of this study was to investigate the ways college students perceived their parents' involvement. Particularly, the overall objective of the study was to measure differences between groups based on the participants' gender, grade point average, age, classification level, their parents' income level and educational attainment. For this study, a survey design was employed to collect data. Two-hundred two (n=202) community college students participated in two empirical studies. The Parental Involvement Assessment (PIA), formulated by the researcher specifically for this study, was used to gather the data. In the preliminary study, Cronbach's Alpha on the instrument was found to be 0.819. Several ANOVAs were performed in order to determine the differences between groups on a number of measures. The results of this research indicated that parental involvement contributes to community college student success, regardless of gender. In addition, parents with higher income levels were more likely to be involved. Additionally, students who were not aware of their GPA indicated that they would know their GPA if their parents were involved. Last, amid other results, findings indicated that students with higher GPAs were more likely to be rewarded for grades, were more likely to be encouraged by their parents, and were more satisfied with the level of parental involvement. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed.

The study includes data from twenty-four undergraduate students gathered through semi-structured interviews. The interviews include questions about student's college experience and the role their parents play throughout the experience. The data in the study was coded and analyzed for themes. The study adds to the body of literature on college student development and emerging adulthood by examining how traditional aged college students experience and perceive the relationship with their parents as they transition from adolescence to young adults. The study also informs the practice of designing services aimed at college students and their parents/families.

Book excerpt: Parental involvement in the life of a college student has often been stereotyped as negative, overbearing, and unnecessary. These stereotypes have depicted parents as helicopters, and more recently as stealth fighters. Consequently, higher education has often maintained an adversarial relationship when interacting with parents of college students. Despite this tension, research indicates that parents provide a unique perspective and resourcefulness that can aid in student success, when engaged and managed appropriately. This study explored one way in which an institution partnered with parents of new students for the mutual goal of student success using a closed Facebook group. Guided by Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler's Parental Involvement Framework (1995), this qualitative investigation implemented document analysis and semi-structured one-on-one interviews to examine the lived experiences of individuals who participated in a Facebook group for parents of new, first-year students attending a single university. The data revealed that when parents were engaged by the institution, several impactful outcomes occurred: students experienced common first-year challenges; participants supported each other using their own personal experiences; the group contributed to parents' understanding of college transition and campus resources; and members appreciated the convenience and accessibility of a Facebook-based group. Each of these outcomes were found to be advantageous toward the goal of new student retention facilitated by parental support. Finally, this study provided a counter narrative that highlighted the strengths and opportunities of parental involvement when appropriately managed and engaged. The findings of this study also revealed that additional research is needed to enhance and inform higher education's understanding of parental involvement in the life of modern-day college students, along with the tools that enhance and facilitate engagement.

Twelve students from a mid-size Midwestern university participated in this basic qualitative study. Through semi-structure interviews, guided conversations were had about how they made decisions during their first year of college and how upon reflection they may have made different decisions as well as how their parents have played a role in their college experience. The data analysis process was guided by Seidel's (1998) process of "noticing, collecting, and thinking about interesting things" while drawing from Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña's (2014) structure for coding. A decision-making model emerged from the data that described the similar ways students were making decisions during their first year of college. Additionally, as the participants continue making their way through the decision-making model, their relationship with their parents continued to evolve allowing the student to develop autonomy. Results of this study imply that college administrators should purposefully educate parents as resources in aiding the development of the college student. Additionally, all members of the campus community need to be mindful of their interactions with students to foster their continued development.

Students' perceptions of their parents' involvement were determined through face-to-face interviews using seventeen questions from the Educational Socialization Scale (Bempechat, 1989) and twenty questions form the Home/School Protocol (Wilson-Jones, 2003). The sample population consisted of 59 fourth and fifth grade students. Students' perceptions of parental involvement were explored in the following areas: (a) education and future plans, (b) homework and school work, (c) participation at school, (d) the value of academic effort, (e) academic shame, and (f) appreciation of parents. The results of this study indicated that these fourth and fifth grade students all had positive perceptions about parental involvement and academic achievement. Also regardless of their academic achievement levels, all students perceived that the leading factors of parental involvement that promoted academic achievement included: (a) parents' discussions of career plans, (b) parent's value of academic effort, and (c) students' appreciation of parents. The results of this study recommended an expanded research of in-depth interviews with students about their perceptions Future studies on students' perceptions should include variables such as: (a) family structures, (b) students interests, and (c) other academic indicators. Additional qualitative research on this topic could challenge long-held assumptions and reveal important information for crafting parental involvement procedures that enhance student academic achievement. Finally, future research should incorporate case studies and longitudinal studies that delve into the social contexts in which students learn and grow.

Descriptive statistics were compiled from the data into graphs. Different families may require different responses or treatments from an institution to become more engaged. If policy and practice are designed to serve only one type of parent--namely, parents who are eager to be involved---others, such as parents of first-generation college students, may be left out. Those left out could provide an important source of support for their students in college.

Through a pre-post survey design, this study examines the perceptions of parents on school to home communication, parental involvement in their children's academic work, and the parents' ability to help their children academically. Also examined are teachers' perceptions of various dimensions of parental involvement using a survey with dimensions which are complementary to those on the parent survey.
