Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative case study was to gain a better understanding of what parental involvement means to parents and what influences them to become involved in a school. Joyce Epstein's Six Types of Parent Involvement Typology provided a guiding framework to assess terms and categories commonly used in parent involvement research. This study was guided by two research questions: What does parental involvement mean to parents? What influences parents to engage in parent involvement? The researcher conducted interviews, focus groups, and took field notes as primary sources of data to answer the two reserach questions. The researcher interviewed six parents that were both male and female parents of students in grades 6-8 who attended either East Hickory Heights Middle School or Rockhill Middle School. Rockhill Middle School made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and East Hickory Heights Middle School did not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the 2008-2009 school year. The two selected middle schools were located in the Riverwood Schools District. Findings from this study indicated that to increase parent involvement in middle schools, school districts and school administrators should involve parents in the decision-making process and develop collaborative practices that will allow parents and schools to communicate and collaborate more effectively together. Additionally, school districts and school administrators should revisit parent involvement programs and activities that were implemented at the elementary school level to increase parent involvement at the middle school level. Research-based parent involvement strategies will allow the Riverwood Schools District to increase parent involvement and participation in any of the six parent involvement strategies suggested by Epstein. Additionally, implementation of research-based parent involvement practices can potentially increase academic success for students at the middle school level. .

Book excerpt: The purpose of this causal comparative study was to establish the effect parental involvement had on academic achievement of students in a Georgia high school and to determine which type of parental involvement had a greater effect on the academic achievement for those students. This study was important because there was limited research that revealed the effect parental involvement had on academic achievement in a high school setting. This study followed a causal comparative research design and used a convenience sampling method which included 100 students and their parents, 64.9% African Americans, 14.9% Caucasians, and 8.5% Hispanic. Parental involvement was measured using the parent and student Family-School Partnership Scales survey; academic achievement was measured using the Georgia Milestones state assessment. Data were analyzed using two t tests to determine the differences in achievement of students with parental involvement and those with little to no parental involvement. Extreme outliers were identified using a box and whisker plot. Key findings revealed that there was a significant difference in academic achievement between high school students with parental support and high school students without parental support relative to reading scores. There was a significant difference in academic achievement between high school students whose parents primarily exhibited home-based educational involvement and high school students whose parents primarily exhibited school-based educational involvement relative to math scores. Future research recommendations are advanced.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the effect of psychological, social and demographic variables on student achievement and summarizes the current research findings in the field. It addresses the need for inclusive and interpretive studies in the field in order to interpret student achievement literature and suggests new pathways for further studies. Appropriately, a meta-analysis approach is used by the contributors to show the big picture to the researchers by analyzing and combining the findings from different independent studies. In particular, the authors compile various studies examining the relationship between student achievement and 21 psychological, social and demographic variables separately. The philosophy behind this book is to direct future research and practices rather than addressing the limits of current studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: For decades, parental involvement has had a direct impact on the success of children. Portions of the No Child Left Behind Act include important requirements for schools, districts, and states to organize programs for parental involvement and to implement ways to communicate with parents and the public about student achievement and the quality and performance of schools. According to Gonzalez (2002), teachers and administrators struggle with the lack of parental involvement on a daily basis. He concludes that finding ways to make parents feel more comfortable and welcome would improve the communication and relationship between parents and schools. The purpose of this study was to explore what prevents and promotes parental involvement in schools. It was the intent of this study to determine whether the school is implementing practices that promote parental involvement. This study provided data that helped the school district adhere to the parental involvement portion of NCLB that encourage schools to work with parents on becoming and staying involved with the education of their children. The methodology employed to collect data in this study was a focus group, parent interviews, and student surveys with open-ended questions. The pool of twenty-one purposive sample participants in this study included two from each of the following categories: the elementary schools, the middle and the high schools; administrators and county office personnel; six parents and six students from elementary, middle and high school in a Northeast Georgia school district. The analysis of data in this study revealed the following themes; communication, reliability, accountability and responsibility, and emotional support promotes parental involvement; and lack of time, lack of education, lack of language proficiency, lack of maturity, and lack of active involvement are the barriers revealed that prevented parental involvement. The result of these findings indicated schools, parents, and students recognized the importance of home-school relationships and were willing to work towards establishing partnerships. The data from this study correlated with the research questions and indicated that promoting parental involvement would aid in the success of schools and students in a Northeast Georgia school district. When schools promote parental involvement by action and not just in word, no child will be left behind.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore principal perceptions regarding parental involvement opportunities and the potential impact these opportunities have on student academic achievement at the middle school level. Data were collected from 82 principals/assistant principals across the state of Pennsylvania utilizing a survey instrument and personal interviews from 10 respondents. As self-reported, participants were divided into two groups: those from middle schools that made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) based upon the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) scores for the 2011-2012 school year (n=47) and those from middle schools that did not meet the requirements for Adequate Yearly Progress (n=35). Participant responses concluded that a variety of parental involvement opportunities are afforded to the parents within the middle schools represented in this study. Further results of this study indicated that more middle school principals/assistant principals from schools that did not make AYP perceived parental involvement to be "Extremely Important" as compared to those participants from schools that made AYP. Vast majority of the participants from both groups perceived parental involvement as having a positive benefit to student academic achievement.
