This book was released on 2018-12-19 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constructed wetlands are proving to be the best natural treatment system for landfill leachates. Most of the contaminants in landfill leachates are degraded in treatment wetlands. Potential for long-term sustainability and significant cost savings are attractive features of this eco-technology. Documentation of the experience in this use of constructed wetlands has been limited. Constructed Wetlands for the Treatment of Landfill Leachates is the first compilation of the results of research from North America and Europe. Originally presented at an international symposium, this collection of papers offers the most recent research findings from the leading researchers in this new and innovative natural treatment system. Specific issues addressed in the text include: leachate characteristics, and the potential for treatability by constructed wetlands wetland treatment, processes and transformation use of constructed wetlands in cold climatic conditions assessment of the tolerance of wetland plants to the toxicity of leachates role of plants in the treatments of leachates integrated wetland systems performance of different wetland treatment systems cost comparisons of wetland technology vs. traditional treatment technologies The potential for environmental contamination due to leachates from landfills is increasing, and there is an urgent need to find ways and means to treat leachates in a sustainable way Constructed Wetlands for the Treatment of Landfill Leachates will provide an invaluable source of information on the subject for scientists, engineers, practitioners, policy makers, and regulatory officials.

This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Attenuation of Pollutants in Municipal Landfill Leachate by Clay Minerals, Vol. 2: Heavy-Metal Adsorption The accumulation of these potentially toxic heavy metals in soils makes long-term application of municipal leachates to the land hazardous, be cause heavy metals enter the human food chain by accumulating in plants. How ever, a lack of basic data on the reactions of these metal ions with soil col loids in the presence of a complex solution matrix, such as leachate, has ham pered efforts to determine what levels of application can be tolerated without degradation or loss of the soil for food crop production. Book Synopsis The Affect [i.e. Effect] of Municipal Landfill Leachate on the Characterization of Fluid Flow Through Clay by : Aaron L. Hope
Download or read book The Affect [i.e. Effect] of Municipal Landfill Leachate on the Characterization of Fluid Flow Through Clay written by Aaron L. Hope and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federal and state regulations prescribe design requirements for low permeability clay landfill liners based on saturated hydraulic conductivity. The assumption that clay liners are saturated for the duration of their life is a simplification of the true processes at work. The fact that clay liners are compacted to optimum, or just wet of optimum, proves that they are initially subject to unsaturated conditions, and it is well known that liners can remain variably saturated for the duration of their life. Furthermore laboratory measurements of saturated hydraulic conductivity are generally based on water as pore fluid. While this is appropriate for landfill cover liners, leaching effects may drastically change pore fluid chemistry as water moves through the landfill to the bottom liner. Since many of the mechanical properties of clay soils are closely related to the water-retention characteristics of the soil mass; and since the latter is a function of the mineralogy, pore fluid chemistry, fabric and structure of the soil mass; any change of the pore fluid chemistry may lead to a removal of existing bonds and therefore an alteration of the internal equilibrium stability of the soil mass. In this study the goal is to determine the effect of modeling two different pore fluids - leachate and water. This research uses an approach that critically assesses how leachate will move through a landfill bottom liner differently than water.
