Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satisfaction ratings from tenure-track faculty at 200 institutions across the country reveal best practices and the key elements of workplace success. Landing a tenure-track position is no easy task. Achieving tenure is even more difficult. Under what policies and practices do faculty find greater clarity about tenure and experience higher levels of job satisfaction? And what makes an institution a great place to work? In 2005–2006, the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education surveyed more than 15,000 tenure-track faculty at 200 participating institutions to assess their job satisfaction. The survey was designed around five key themes for faculty satisfaction: tenure clarity, work-life balance, support for research, collegiality, and leadership. Success on the Tenure Track positions the survey data in the context of actual colleges and universities and real faculty and administrators who talk about what works and why. Best practices at the highest-rated institutions in the survey—Auburn, Ohio State, North Carolina State, Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Iowa, Kansas, and North Carolina at Pembroke—give administrators practical, proven advice on how to increase their employee satisfaction. Additional chapters discuss faculty demographics, trends in employment practices, what leaders can do to create and sustain a great workplace for faculty, and what the future might hold for tenure. An actively engaged faculty is crucial for American higher education to retain its global competitiveness. Cathy Ann Trower’s analysis provides colleges and universities a considerable inside advantage to get on the right track toward a happy, productive workforce.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this research was to gain an understanding of the levels of job satisfaction of full-time faculty members at a for-profit university. There has been a paucity in the study of job satisfaction for faculty working in this sector of higher education (Kinser, 2006). Job satisfaction was measured by using the Job Descriptive Index (Stanton, Sinar, Balzer & Smith, 2002a) within the conceptual framework of faculty job satisfaction developed by Hagedorn (2000). The facets selected for study were: the work itself, salary, advancement, administration, and collegial relationships. The findings indicated that the job-satisfaction facets with the highest scores were administration and collegial relationships. The facets with the lowest scores were salary and advancement. Because these results were generally contrary to the scholarly literature on this topic, one primary recommendation was to continue this line of research using qualitative as well as quantitative methods.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the attention of college trustees and administrators as well as the general public has turned largely to increasing positive student outcomes and cost effectiveness, while the satisfaction of faculty and staff has been viewed as a significantly lesser concern. This volume argues that positive outcomes for the entire campus can only be achieved within an environment that considers the satisfaction of all of those employed in the academy. The contributors examine various jobs within the campus community-including classified staff and student affairs administrators as well as faculty-and suggest factors that will promote job satisfaction and thereby foster other positive outcomes. They review, for example, the positive relationship between sabbatical leave and the development and satisfaction of faculty. They also explore the role of the faculty union in the satisfaction of community college faculty, the unique challenges to achieving satisfaction that face women faculty members and faculty of color, and other key issues.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to survey the levels of job satisfaction among fulltime faculty members at a selected Mississippi community college using the constructs of Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene Theory as defined by Wood (1973). The researcher used Wood’s 1976 refined Faculty Job Satisfaction/Dissatisfaction Scale to discover the participants’ levels of total job satisfaction; to discover the participants’ levels of overall job satisfaction; to compare the means of total job satisfaction factors to the mean of total job satisfaction; and to examine the correlation of the faculty’s mean responses to the total job satisfaction individual questions to the mean of the overall job satisfaction. The target population of this study was all full-time faculty at a Mississippi community college. The population consisted of 152 full-time faculty members. The findings of the survey indicated that the 85 participants were moderately satisfied with their jobs. The survey was designed to incorporate 2 treatments to ask the respondents to answer questions about job satisfaction. The participants chose a higher value on the Likert scale when asked the single question relating to overall job satisfaction. When the information was broken down into factors, the participants rated their job satisfaction lower. The Wilcoxon results stated the 2 treatments were significant at alpha level .05, and the null hypothesis was rejected, meaning there was a difference in the responses with two treatments of surveying respondents.

Book excerpt: Job satisfaction has received considerable attention within the community college sector, but there is limited research focused solely on the job satisfaction of foreign-born faculty members employed at community colleges. The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with job satisfaction among foreign-born faculty members employed at U.S. community colleges. This study addressed the need to better understand foreign-born faculty members within the community college sector. The following research questions that guided this investigation were: (a) which motivator and hygiene factors have the most significant relationship with job satisfaction among foreign-born faculty members at community colleges? (b) to what extent does gender influence job satisfaction among foreign-born faculty members at community colleges? (c) to what extent does academic status influence job satisfaction among foreign-born faculty members at community colleges? (d) are there significant differences in the overall job satisfaction between foreign-born and U.S. citizen community college faculty members? This study was guided by Hagedorn’s (2000) conceptual model and Herzberg’s et al. (1959) theoretical framework. Variables from Hagedorn’s model were used to measure job satisfaction among foreign-born community college faculty members. A secondary analysis was conducted utilizing data from the 2013 Survey of Doctoral Recipients (SDR). Data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics to address each research question. Multiple regression and an independent sample t-test were applied to analyze the data. The sample included 214 foreign-born community college members. The multiple regression analysis revealed that opportunities for advancement, salary, degree of independence, and contribution to society were significant in predicting job satisfaction among foreign-born community college faculty members. However, the results indicated that gender and academic status were not significant factors influencing job satisfaction among foreign-born faculty members. The t-test results showed that there was a significant difference in U.S. citizen and foreign-born faculty members’ overall job satisfaction. The findings of this study has implications for community college administrators, faculty members and key stakeholders interested in understanding retention and job satisfaction factors associated with foreign-born faculty members within the community college sector.
