Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonindigenous invasive species (NIS) have become increasingly common worldwide and are one of the leading causes of biodiversity loss in freshwater. Three widespread NIS in Wisconsin lakes are rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus, RC), banded mystery snails (Viviparus georgianus, BMS), and Eurasian water-milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum, EWM), species that commonly co-occur. All three of these species can be very abundant and two (EWM and RC) are known to be individually damaging. The current study evaluated the impacts and interactions between these three invaders on seven common plant species and three common snails in a three-factor split-plot experiment conducted in 12 outdoor tanks (2.1 m3). Results indicate that RC had significant negative effects on final biomass of all but one plant species, with the greatest total effects on single-stemmed and branched species. Rusty crayfish significantly reduced biomass of native snails, but not the invasive BMS. Overall, main effects of RC on native plants and snails were much greater than effects of either EWM or BMS, or the combined effects of these invaders. These impacts, together with the rapid production and growth of EWM fragments, suggest that RC may facilitate the spread of EWM in lakes by removing competition from native plants.

The Lake Restoration Handbook: A New Zealand Perspective addresses this need through a series of chapters that draw on recent advances in modelling and monitoring tools, citizen science and First Peoples’ roles, catchment and lake-focused restoration techniques, and policy implementation. New Zealand lakes, like lakes across the globe, are subject to multiple pressures that have increased in severity and scale as land use has intensified, invasive species have spread and global climate change becomes manifest. This books builds on the popular Lake Managers Handbook (1987), which provided guidance on undertaking investigations into, and understanding lake ecosystems in New Zealand. The Lake Restoration Handbook: A New Zealand Perspective synthesises contemporary issues related to lake restoration and rehabilitation, integrated with social science and cultural viewpoints, and complemented by authoritative topic-area summaries by renowned scientists and practitioners from across the globe. The book examines the progress of lake restoration and the new and emerging tools available to managers for predicting and effecting change. The book will be a valuable resource for natural and social scientists, policy writers, lake managers, and anyone interested in the health of lake ecosystems.

How does natural selection shape growth patterns and life cycles of individuals, and hence the size-structure of populations? This book will stimulate biologists to look into some important and interesting biological problems from a new angle of approach, concerning: - life history evolution, - intraspecific competition and niche theory, - structure and dynamics of ecological communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction and rapid spread of the zebra mussel in North American waters has caused great concern among industrial and recreational users of these waters. This bivalve mollusk is a biofouler that attaches to any firm substrate (e.g. rocks, piers, water intake pipes, boat hulls) and has already created significant problems for raw water users such as water treatment plants and power plants. Zebra Mussels: Biology, Impacts and Control provides essential information regarding the biology of the zebra mussel in North America and Europe, presents case studies of environmental and industrial impacts, and outlines control strategies. Summary articles detail its life history, origins, and morphology. The book also examines techniques used to culture and maintain this organism in the laboratory. Thirty-two color plates illustrate some of the dramatic problems created by the explosive population growth of this species. Zebra Mussels: Biology, Impacts, and Control is an important resource for ecologists, conservationists, environmental consultants, water quality engineers, regulatory officials, power utilities, and libraries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crayfish are the largest, mobile freshwater invertebrates with some 540 recognised species. They are of long standing interest to anatomists and physiologists. For their great commercial importance as a human food delicacy, crayfish are now becoming of wider interest to molecular biologists, and also to conservationists due to the fact that in some countries many of the native crayfish species are under threat from human activity, disease, and competition from other introduced crayfish species. This fully comprehensive book covers all major aspects of these important animals, including taxonomy, anatomy, evolution, growth and reproduction, behaviour, ecology, physiology, conservation, genetics, immunology, environmental aspects, and diseases. There are separate chapters on each genus of crayfish of commercial importance. Written by 22 well-known experts, Biology of Freshwater Crayfish has been carefully edited by David Holdich, internationally recognised for his work with these animals. The book is an essential purchase for anyone involved with the biology or exploitation of crayfish, including freshwater and invertebrate biologists and personnel involved in fisheries and aquaculture. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where biological sciences, fisheries or aquaculture are studied or taught should have copies of this important book on their shelves.
