Book excerpt: Technological standards have existed for years encouraging the use of computer technology as a teaching tool. By increasing technology use in the classroom, educators are able to address teaching and learning opportunities for all students. The need for these opportunities is essential in the rural areas of the U.S. The purpose of this study was to determine if teachers in a rural city school district in Mississippi experience computer anxiety in using new and emerging software technologies for instructional purpose; examine the level of computer anxiety teachers experience in using computers; and explore if relationships exist in the level of computer anxiety experienced by teachers based on the following demographic variables: gender, age, years of teaching, subject area taught, and educational attainment. The population consisted of 110 teachers with a minimum of bachelor's degree and certified to teach in their respective areas of specialization. Findings from descriptive statistics revealed that the majority of the participants were female teachers with 43% of participants possessing either a Master's or Ph. D. degree. A large portion of these teachers had one year or more experience with learning about or working with computers with access to a computer at home. The means revealed that when teachers have a moderate degree of confidence, liking, and usefulness when using new and emerging software technology there is a low degree of anxiety. Pearson Correlations were used to examine the relationships between the subscales (anxiety, confidence, liking, and usefulness) and demographic variables (gender, age, years of teaching, subject area taught, and educational attainment). Results confirmed that there were significant relationships between age and anxiety, gender and confidence, gender and liking, and years of teaching and anxiety. However, there were no significant relationships between the other variables. Findings of this study have the potential to contribute to the development of a profile that could be used to identify teachers who need exposure, to technological training and professional development to help reduce computer anxiety and minimize resistance to computer usage. Additionally, findings of this study can serve as a growing baseline of literature that relates to computer anxiety among teachers.

This study examines several factors relating to the use of computers in the classroom by teachers. The factors examined include teacher attitudes, emotions, beliefs, and outside influences. This was done by a review of the present literature, administering two surveys, and analyzing the survey data. Questionnaires were distributed to faculty at five randomly selected high schools in a Midwest city participating in the study. Data from the survey was then examined to determine which factors correlate with teacher computer use in the classroom. The results of this study will help improve understanding of teachers' instructional computer use.

Book excerpt: The major purpose of this study was to investigate the Spanish and Portuguese Instructors' attitudes toward technology at the University of Mississippi. In this mixed method study, with a very limited number of participants (N = 20), attitudes were analyzed by combining the results of all three instruments that composed this research project: a survey, class observations and personal interviews. The results from the triangulation of these three instruments showed that the instructors have a positive attitude toward technology. This particular investigation adapted and employed two dimensions to assess teachers' attitudes toward technology: (1) anxiety, fear and/or aversion; and (2) enjoyment, enthusiasm and/or confidence. Cronbach's alpha was computed for each dimension, and the results revealed a high level of reliability and internal consistency with all alphas exceeding .90 for both scales (.907 and .915, respectively). After statistically analyzing both dimensions, a Pearson's product-moment correlation (the Pearson r) was also computed to measure the strength of the relationship between these two variables, which are labeled ANX (anxiety) and ENJ (enjoyment). The popularity of one-to-one computing has been increasing rapidly, with more and more schools adopting this initiative. However, studies on past one-to-one initiatives have raised concerns over the proper adoption of technology into classrooms. To ensure successful implementation of a change generating initiative like the computing initiative, schools should ensure buy-in and readiness of the stakeholders, especially the teachers. Understanding the teacher's beliefs and attitudes towards technology, and addressing the teacher concerns is a critical step in ensuring the successful implementation of technology integration. The purpose of this basic qualitative study is to understand the beliefs, attitudes and concerns of Early College High School teachers towards one-to-one computing, and their use of computers in classrooms during the early adoption phase of the one-to-one computing initiative. The study was guided by the following research questions: What prior experiences do the teachers bring to one-to-one computing? What are the teachers' beliefs, attitudes, and concerns towards one-to one computing? What support do the teachers need during the adoption phase of the computing initiative? Data were collected using in-depth interviews and a focus group, and data was analyzed using the constant comparative method. The data analysis revealed that while teachers had a positive attitude towards the one-to-one computing initiative and its impact on students, the pedagogical beliefs differed among them. Also, a number of teacher concerns surfaced related to hardware and software support, professional development, classroom management, communication, and personal anxieties. Some implications for practice include: need for developing a communication plan; restructuring of professional development to meet core curriculum technology standards and te.

Book excerpt: This study analyzed the attitudes and perceptions of teachers following the implementation of a teacher laptop initiative. The attitudes and perceptions were documented through a mixed-methods research design that collected both quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data were gathered using pretest and posttest surveys. Qualitative data were gathered through focus group interviews and were used to further inform the quantitative data. The quantitative data suggested that a teacher laptop initiative can affect attitudes and perceptions of teachers. Participants in this study increased their overall perception of their computer use and began to adopt technology in the classroom by using it more often. Results suggested that teachers became more comfortable with computers when given a laptop. The quantitative data did not show significance between a teacher laptop initiative and teacher interest toward computers and teacher view of computer significance. This research also suggested that a teacher laptop initiative, coupled with professional development, can better prepare students for the 21st century. An implication of this study was if teachers are given resources and proper training on how to implement technology in the classroom, attitudes and classroom practices can be changed. Participants believed if educators begin to integrate technology in the classroom and model skills for students, technology could help prepare students for the 21st century.
