The adolescent searches to find his or her identity and assume his or her role in society. The adolescent compares himself or herself to the "ideal" self established by society (Barris & Kielhofner, 1985). Different environmental, social, and psychological issues may influence the development of the adolescent. This investigator will examine the gender specific differences in personal and social adjustment among male and female adolescents. A total of 30 subjects, 14 and 15 years of age, from a private boarding school in Wilbraham, Massachusetts were given the Index of Personality Characteristics (IPC). The IPC is a 75-item self-report questionnaire developed by Brown and Coleman (1988). It examines the interaction of the adolescent with his or her environment and social contacts. This investigator found that females had a significantly (p>.05) higher mean score on the following subtests: Academic, Perception of Others, and Acting Out. No significant (p> .05) differences were found to exist between the females and the males surveyed on the other five subtests: Nonacademic, Perception of Self, Acting In, Internal Locus of Control, and External Locus of Control. As health care professionals working with adolescents, we need to be aware of the factors that influence the development of self-concept for the adolescent in order to provide the most effective and therapeutic treatment.
