Book excerpt: The major objective of this contract was to investigate the oscillation characteristics of a tunnel diode mounted in a loop detector configuration for possible applications to superheterodyne receivers. A theoretical method is proposed for analyzing a tunnel diode oscillator in a three-dimensional microwave structure. The method is first applied to a tunnel diode oscillator in a rectangular waveguide. Effects of waveguide dimensions and tunnel diode parameters on oscillation frequency and power are calculated. The method is then applied to an open structure where a tunnel diode with a semi-circular loop whisker is mounted on a conducting plane. For this configuration the maximum observed oscillation frequency was 20 GHz which is in good agreement with theory. At least a fourfold reduction of the loop radius and wire diameter would be required to make this device practical in the low millimeter wavelength region. The diodes described herein were also observed to have a life expectancy of a few weeks at the best. Apparently, this is a result of zinc from the whisker diffusing into the gallium-arsenide crystal and is therefore unavoidable.

Book excerpt: Efforts to determine the feasibility of constructing 10 mw 10 kmc tunnel diode oscillators have continued and diode requirements for these oscillators determined. Various diode fabrication techniques and oscillator circuit techniques were investigated to determine the best combinations of these to potentially meet the frequency and power requirements. Four packaged and two distributed junction tunnel diode oscillators were designed and built. The present oscillator study has concentrated on the packaged X-band oscillators. Using the packaged single diode oscillators, power outputs of more than 100 microwatts have been obtained in X-band. Tuning problems seriously hamper the use of larger peak current, larger capacity packaged diodes. Some circuit changes have been made which partially alleviate this problem. The use of a resistive shunt across the ceramic of the diode package has improved the high-frequency or power output characteristics of these oscillators. The reduced-size stripline package oscillator is the most successful. Low peak current to capacitance ratios have been a difficulty for the distributed tunnel diode; so far no power output has been obtained in X-band from a distributed tunnel diode oscillator.
