Book excerpt: "The purpose of this research was to investigate the contribution of preservice courses and experiences toward self-efficacy in the area of classroom management among novice music educators. The study involved 89 music educators currently employed in the areas of band, orchestra, chorus, and general music in grades K through 12 from a large metropolitan school district in the southeastern region of the United States. The researcher addressed perceived levels of preparation for classroom management in music classrooms as a result of preservice music teacher education experiences, system-sponsored induction programs for inservice teachers, and experiences with mentor teachers. Chi-square analyses resulted in data used to compare perceived preparedness with other variable data. Music educators perceived being inadequately prepared to face the challenges of classroom management during the early years of teaching. The recommended course of study, based on participant responses, is provided to address the expressed needs of the respondents.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study analyzed the current required coursework of pre-service music educators to prepare for teaching students with special needs at Pennsylvania degree-granting institutions. It surveyed graduates of Pennsylvania degree-granting institutions on their experience in preparing teaching students with special needs and the challenges and barriers faced as in-service teachers. An additional survey targeted the perceptions of current Pennsylvania music education professors and their thoughts on preparing pre-service music educators for teaching students with special needs. The surveys explore the answers to whether coursework designed for pre-service music educators to teach students with special needs successfully are adequate. The current literature on in-service teachers teaching music to students with special needs targets in-service teacher professional development on the topic. While there is research on the perceptions of music teachers teaching students with special needs and inclusion, very little research exists on examining the undergraduate level coursework required to successfully teach music to special needs students. Data collected identifies deficiencies in specific music courses on teaching students with special needs in the undergraduate curriculum, as well as the need for field experience. Findings include the quality of the current coursework in the undergraduate curriculum, in-service teachers’ perceptions and attitudes toward their individual preparedness for teaching special needs students, intersection with music therapy, and calls for future research. Future research includes revising curricula at higher education institutions, targeted professional development for in-service music educators, and collaboration with music therapists and special educators.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate preservice music educators' perceptions of collegiate large ensemble experiences. The researcher created and tested a survey designed to explore how preservice music educators perceived their large ensemble experiences may impact their pedagogy skills and musicianship skills. Local (n = 101) and national (n = 77) respondents answered agreement statements about ensemble experiences, course enrollment questions, and a ranking question. An exploratory factor analysis on data from the instrument yielded four factors: Conducting Gesture Growth, Musical Skills and Pedagogy Skills, Repertoire and Literature Selection, and Other with a Cronbach's alpha of .92. Composite score results indicated that there was a statistically significant difference for one factor by primary teaching identity. Preservice music educators observed the most musical skills growth for their conducting gesture. Participants gave the highest pedagogy skills ratings for statements about large ensembles preparing them for a career in music education, improving their teaching effectiveness, and ensemble experiences altering their perceptions of music teaching.

Book excerpt: Despite the inclusion of undergraduate conducting coursework in music teacher preparation programs in the United States, the performance of novice conductors may require further development during their field experiences. The clinical music educator fills a critical role in facilitating conductor skill development, yet no comprehensive framework supports this coaching. This explanatory sequential mixed methods design study identifies effective strategies in the mentoring of preservice music educators toward refining their instrumental conducting skills by classifying perspectives of clinical and preservice educators and their perceived roles in developing preservice music educators' conducting skills. A broad base of participants (N = 73) was surveyed on their experience in their role as either preservice educator conducting mentors or as novice conductors, and selected mentors (N = 10) were interviewed to identify strategies in developing preservice educators’ conducting skills. The study found that mentoring in the development of independent gestures and aural error detection skills is critical to the success of the preservice educator, thereby contributing to the success of the music students in his or her future classroom. This research could further influence the design of undergraduate conducting curricula and have implications in the broader area of teacher education or fields where mentoring relationships exist.
