Download or read book Glass written by Horst Scholze and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was learned that Professor Scholze was revising his classic work on the nature, structure, and properties of glass, it was natural to conceive the idea of translating the new edition into English. Professor Scholze enthusiastically endorsed this suggestion and asked for the concurrence of his publisher, Springer-Verlag. Springer-Verlag welcomed the idea and readily agreed to provide support. With the essential agreements in place, Professor Michael Lakin, Professor of German at Alfred University, was asked to do the transla tion, and I subsequently agreed to work with Professor Lakin to check for technical accuracy. I was happy to accept this task because of my respect for Professor Scholze and because of the value to glass scientists and engineers of having available an English edition of Glas. Professor Scholze died before publication ofthis English edition of his work. However, he had reviewed the entire English text and had approved it. Professor Lakin and I appreciated the confidence he placed in us, and we were gratified with his acceptance of our efforts. His scientific contributions were numerous and important; they will long serve as guideposts for research in many key areas. We hope this translation of Glas will help make his legacy accessible to more people. Professor Lakin and I have tried to provide a translation that is accurate and true to the original but that has a distinctive English "flavor"; that is, it is not just a literal translation.

Book Synopsis Chemical Approach to Glass by : Miloš Bohuslav Volf
Download or read book Chemical Approach to Glass written by Miloš Bohuslav Volf and published by . This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important and classic scientific study by Mr. Volf, has been one of the most impossible books to find. Very few libraries, public or private have this book until now. This is a very technical description on the chemistry, definition, and constructions of glasses. The properties of various glasses and their relationship to various elements and their effects on glass are covered. Numerous tables, formulas, figures and references are found throughout the book. Recommended for glass scientists, engineers, laboratories and reference libraries. Artists and craft people may be looking for information in much more depth will also want this book.
Download or read book Glass Chemistry written by Werner Vogel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glass Chemistry is concerned with the relation of chemical composition, structure and properties of various glasses. The book has been translated from the third German edition, which serves as a textbook for university students in materials sciences and a reference book for scientists and engineers in glass science and production. The central themes of the book are the chemistry and physics of glass. Detailed knowledge of the compositional and structural facts is the basis for the systematic development of new glasses as construction and optical materials. Glass Chemistry is an interdisciplinary book on the borderlines between chemistry, physics, mineralogy and even biology and medicine. The book represents a well balanced treatment for students, scientists and engineers.
Book Synopsis Properties and Applications of Glass by : Harold Rawson
Download or read book Properties and Applications of Glass written by Harold Rawson and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 1980 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the author summarizes the present state of knowledge of those physical and chemical properties of glasses that are important as regards their application and manufacture. The nature of these applications is briefly described. The introductory chapter deals with the nature and chemical composition of inorganic glasses, covering such topics as structure, devitrification and phase separation. The main part of the book comprises a group of chapters describing the important physical properties: viscosity, thermal expansion, mechanical strength, refractive index and dispersion, absorption of radiation and electrical properties. The final chapter deals with chemical durability. Most chapters deal briefly with methods of measurement of the property concerned and with the effects of glass composition, temperature, heat treatment, etc. Wherever appropriate, the scientific principles relevant to particular applications are discussed. Sufficient references to the literature are given to enable the reader to follow up in more detail the various topics discussed.
