Book excerpt: "The purpose of this research was to determine if principals' behaviors or actions related to a systems orientation or person orientation as defined by the trait approach to leadership theory. Also important to the study was to determine if teachers' perceptions of principal leadership behaviors were gender specific, i.e., to determine if subordinates (i.e. teachers) perceived male and female principals differently, as well as to determine if those perceptions differ according to subordinate gender (i.e. do male and female teachers view male and female principals differently?). Data were gathered from a school district in the southeastern United States. Approximately 300 teachers from eleven traditional high schools were surveyed using the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) based on the work of Ralph Stogdill and the Ohio State University Leadership Studies. The survey was uploaded and administered as a web based survey, with respondents contacted through email. The evidence from the study shows that there was no statistical difference in the leadership styles of mid level and high performing men and women principals as reported by teachers. However, male principals were reported more often to be in the lower performing quadrants (Structured or Passive Leaders)than women leaders. Female principals were reported as being more attentive to systems and person orientations than their male counterparts. Data gathered outside of the LBDQ provided evidence that women and men teachers both report being more satisfied with female principals than with male principals, as indicated by responses to the question of "do you feel your principal is effective?" But what if there was a way to teach children how to manage priorities, focus on goals and be a positive influence on the world around them? The Leader in Meis that programme. It's based on a hugely successful initiative carried out at the A.B. Combs Elementary School in North Carolina. To hear the parents of A. B Combs talk about the school is to be amazed. In 1999, the school debuted a programme that taught The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Peopleto a pilot group of students. The parents reported an incredible change in their children, who blossomed under the programme. By the end of the following year the average end-of-grade scores had leapt from 84 to 94. This book will launch the message onto a much larger platform. Stephen R. Covey takes the 7 Habits, that have already changed the lives of millions of people, and shows how children can use them as they develop. Those habits -- be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win, seek to understand and then to be understood, synergize, and sharpen the saw -- are critical skills to learn at a young age and bring incredible results, proving that it's never too early to teach someone how to live well.

Book excerpt: This study arose from a professional curiosity regarding what high school principals and teachers believed were the most essential leadership qualities of the high school principal. The premise was to quantitatively conclude whether a disconnect existed between what high school principals and teachers believed were the most essential leadership characteristics of the high school principal. The given leadership characteristics were prefaced with the understanding that the most essential leadership characteristics are those that have the greatest impact on student academic achievement and building climate/culture. The study was of the mixed-method variety, with the vast majority of the data coming from two, ten-question surveys. One survey was provided to all high school principals in the state of Minnesota, and the second was provided to teachers in four Minnesota high schools. The second portion of the research included interviews with four high school principals. The interviews were used to ascertain the principals' thoughts with respect to the quantitative data collected. The findings showed that high school principals and teachers show a great deal of commonality regarding what they consider to be the most essential leadership characteristics of the high school principal. However, the survey also showed that while high school principals and high school teachers find a great deal of agreement regarding the essential leadership characteristics, they do not necessarily find agreement on how site-based decisions are made or the style of leadership exhibited through their collective experiences with high school principals. The findings of this research will be further disseminated to high school principals to provide them with insight regarding their perceived role in school leadership. This information should be helpful to high school principals in terms of increasing their personal leadership capacity and, therefore, increasing student academic achievement and the climate/culture of their respective schools.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership behaviors that improved student achievement in three selected Georgia high schools. The participants were chosen based on successfully achieving adequate yearly progress (AYP) during 2005-2006 school years, as outlined by the Georgia Department of Education. Fifteen leaders from three Georgia high schools were interviewed to examine their roles in improving student achievement. Research protocol questions guided the interview to capture the essence of the work of leaders. Each participant answered seven questions derived from the review of literature to identify the leaders behavior that improved student achievement. The qualitative, phenomenological research design was employed; the researcher analyzed statements into clusters of meaning. Clusters were then transformed into summaries of experiences. The leadership behaviors, themes and patterns that emerged from the data collection and data analysis were as follows: (1) high expectations, (2) developing relationships, (3) identifying the right personnel, (4) setting achievement goals, (5) using data to guide instruction and decision making, (6) assisting low achievers, (7) involving all stakeholders, (8) monitoring student and teacher progress, and (9) implementing strategies to improve student achievement. According to the researchers findings in the 2 study, the use or practice of the nine leader behaviors, themes, and patterns are actions by school leaders that were instrumental in improving student achievement.

This book introduces a top-down power mechanism called defined autonomy, a concept that focuses on district-defined, nonnegotiable, common goals and a system of accountability supported by assessment tools. Defined autonomy creates an effective balance of centralized direction and individualized empowerment that allows building-level staff the stylistic freedom to respond quickly and effectively to student failure.
