Book excerpt: The current study explores language learners' use of reading strategies and views reading as an act of engaging in and producing meaningful discourse from shared experiences as framed by sociocultural theory. This study involved three groups of two English learners with low, intermediate and advanced proficiency levels. All the participants were college students from different cultural backgrounds with various first languages. First, a modified strategy questionnaire was used to explore learners' self-reported use of reading strategies. During the research process, six verbal protocols were conducted with each participant in order to determine what strategies the students used in the process of reading. All the participants engaged in stimulated recall immediately after reading a given passage. In the meantime, the participants were asked to complete the self-monitoring form each time they read an article (at least three articles each week). Interviews were another important source of information for this mix-method study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted after all the verbal protocol tasks were completed with each participant in order to acquire how learners perceive SRL strategy use and reading comprehension. Descriptive and correlation tests were used for the statistical analyses; while the verbal protocols, self-monitoring forms, and interview results were thoroughly analyzed with the help of transcribing, coding, and memo writing. Several implications can be drawn from the results. First, as expected, advanced L2 readers applied more SRL strategies in their learning in general. Second, the results suggest that readers applied various strategies according to their difficulties in reading, the text content/topics, their reading motivation/interest, reading goals, cultural background, and familiarity with the topic. Last but not least, this study explored the relative effects of cultural and content familiarity on low- and high-level readers' comprehension.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is to investigate practical applications and contributions of self-regulated learning (SRL) to second/foreign language (L2) writing from sociocognitive and sociocultural perspectives. It showcases a comprehensive and updated review of conceptual and methodological issues of SRL and the state-of-the-art research on its applications to L2 learning and teaching. This volume further elaborates the design and results of a large-scale project which conducts observational and intervention studies investigating SRL strategies in L2 writing. This book reveals that a cross-disciplinary understanding of SRL strategies plays a crucial role in advancing theoretical functions of SRL and in extending its applications to L2 education in general, and L2 writing in particular. This book makes significant contributions to developing and validating new conceptual frameworks and tools for evaluating multidimensional structures of SRL strategies and self-efficacy in L2 writing; elucidating the interplay of personal, behavioral, environmental and psychological factors with SRL strategies and writing performance; and presenting an effective self-regulation instructional model for nurturing L2 learners’ motivation and confidence to strategize, reflect and succeed in writing. Teng has established herself as one of the prominent scholars in the discussion of self-regulated learning strategies. Her contribution to the fields of L2 writing and strategic learning are undeniable. This monograph is an excellent showing of how her endeavors to bring established theories from educational psychology to applied writing research have progressed over a number of methodologically rigorous studies. It should be required reading for anyone with an interest in cultivating strategic writers not only in the Chinese context but worldwide. Nathan Thomas, UCL Institute of Education

Book excerpt: Abstract: This is a qualitative case study to investigate elementary school children's self-efficacy beliefs and use of self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies in the process of learning English as a second language. Drawing upon the social cognitive and sociocultural perspectives of self-regulation, recent studies of students' self-efficacy beliefs, and language learners' willingness to communicate, this study provides a "thick description" of four Chinese children's behaviors associated with self-efficacy beliefs and their strategy use across home-based and school-based contexts. Participants reported self-efficacy beliefs across a variety of language-learning tasks in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This study suggests that self-efficacy is a task-specific construct. Each child's self-efficacy varies across specific tasks and across home-based and school-based language-learning contexts. All participants in this study reported higher self-efficacy to complete listening and speaking language activities than reading and writing activities. Sources of the children's self-efficacy were also explored. The participants' self-efficacy beliefs were associated with their expertise in the content area, self-perceptions of English proficiency level, task difficulty level, social persuasion, physiological or emotional state, interest, attitude toward the English language and the English speaking community, and the social and cultural context. Nearly all 14 classes of the SRL strategies developed by Zimmerman and Martinez-Pons (1986) were reported. Students reported more strategies in reading than writing. The most commonly used SRL strategies employed by all the participants were seeking social assistance, seeking information, reviewing records, and environmental structuring. These findings have extended scholarly work on children's self-efficacy beliefs and their use of language-learning strategies in the context of second language acquisition. The implications of this study also extend to language classroom teaching since teachers may better understand their students' self-efficacy and the impact of self-efficacy based on this study. They may incorporate SRL strategies specific to second language learning in the curriculum and enhance students' self-efficacy beliefs by providing accurate and continuous feedback to the students.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Pedagogy - Adult Education, National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad (English Department), course: Research Project, language: English, abstract: The present study aims to investigate, that age is not a detriment to language learning .As young students are biologically disposed to better second language learning, as well as given certain benefits such as lower self-monitor and affective filter ,but at the same time adults are also not at a lower vantage point in L2 learning process. In the language learning program, adult learners bring with them certain advantages. Adults are better at understanding grammatical rules since they are aware of the rules and structures in their own language. [...] Especially in the areas of vocabulary and language structure, adults are actually better language learners than children. Adult learners have more highly developed cognitive systems, are able to make higher order associations and generalizations, and can integrate new language input with their already substantial learning experience. They also rely on long-term memory rather than the short-term memory function used by children and younger learners for rote learning. Adults have already developed learning strategies that have served them well in other contexts. They can use these strategies to their advantage in language learning. This research will suggest ways of dealing better with adult learners in their academic performance in the language class. The researchers' aim will be to investigate that they have potentials to become accomplished language learners with the advantage of more advanced cognitive development in the first language ,and they integrate new language input with their already substantial learning experience. To prove her point of view the researcher will involve 10 teachers and 30 students of Diploma,Certificate and Foundation level at the Department of English (functional Courses) at National University of Modern Languages Islamabad .For assessing adult learners proficiency in the class, questionnaires will be distributed among the participants. Classroom observation are also contributing factor in determining the learning process of adult learners so these tools will be used to find the role and behavior pattern of adult learners .Further it would help language teachers to understand that experience of adult learner is a living text book, and teachers can go through the language programme by cooperating with adult learners.

Book excerpt: Self-regulated learning strategies have recently received a remarkable attention by researchers. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between self-regulated learning strategies and students' reading comprehension ability as well as their language proficiency. To do so, 115 university students majoring in TEFL were selected. First, a TOEFL test was given to the participants so as to determine their language proficiency as well as reading comprehension ability. Then, they were asked to fill out self-regulated learning strategies questionnaire. In order to analyze the data obtained, descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation were conducted. The results of data analyses revealed that there is a significant relationship between the students' use of self-regulated learning strategies and their reading comprehension ability. Also, a significant correlation between the students' use of self-regulated learning strategies and their language proficiency was found. Finally, the pedagogical message of this study is that teachers and students should incorporate self-regulated learning strategies into their teaching and learning process.

Book excerpt: This study looks specifically at the fields of self-efficacy and self-regulation and how they influence each other in an academic environment. Both are complex constructs with a history of change and growth. The study further explores my own practice within the ESL classroom and how I might promote self-efficacy through self-regulated strategy instruction. It is my hope that self-regulatory strategy instruction can promote self-efficacy among my students and academic, social, and emotional tasks and goals will be more attainable. My primary research question is: Does the integration of self-regulated learning strategies instruction for reading in my ESL secondary curriculum raise students' awareness of their self-efficacy? In this exploration, a secondary question is addressed: Which self-regulated learning strategies do students most readily make use of as a result of this instruction?

Book excerpt: This book explores the reasons why adult ESL learners drop out of their language classes and suggests explicit strategies for keeping students engaged. The most effective strategies may be personal rather than technical or curricular. Based on a study of a group of Mexican immigrants to the US, the author proposes that superación or ‘self-actualization’ is crucial to understanding the relative success of adult ESL learners. Learners’ decisions to drop out were not hasty or superficial but were based on a commonsense assessment concerning how the class might improve the quality of their lives. Those involved in delivering ESL to adult learners should stress the tangible, practical advantages that accrue with learning English, and at the same time strive to make instruction relevant.

Book excerpt: The Second Handbook of English Language Teaching provides a comprehensive examination of policy, practice, research and theory related to English language teaching in international contexts. Over 70 chapters focus on the research foundation for best practices, frameworks for policy decisions, and areas of consensus and controversy in second-language acquisition and pedagogy. In countries around the globe, English has become the second language taught most frequently and intensively. In many countries, particularly in Asia, government policies have made English a part of the curriculum from primary school on. Demand for English teaching by parents and adult learners is fueled by the desire to increase economic competitiveness, globalization of the workforce, immigration, and a move toward lifelong learning. Immigration has led to an increased demand for English-language teaching even in countries where English is the dominant language.

Book excerpt: Now in its fifth edition, the Handbook of Research on Teaching the English Language Arts--sponsored by the International Literacy Association and the National Council of Teachers of English--remains at the forefront in bringing together prominent scholars, researchers, and professional leaders to offer an integrated perspective on teaching the English language arts and a comprehensive overview of research in the field. Reflecting important developments since the publication of the fourth edition in 2017, this new edition is streamlined and completely restructured around "big ideas" in the field related to theoretical and research foundations, learners in context, and new literacies. Addressing all the language arts within a holistic perspective (speaking/listening, viewing, language, writing, reading), it covers new and important topics, such as online learning, multimodalities, culturally responsive learning, and more.

Teaching and Researching Language Learning Strategies redraws the landscape of language learning strategies at just the right time. In this book Rebecca Oxford charts the field systematically and coherently for the benefit of language learning practitioners, students, and researchers. Offering practical, innovative suggestions for assessing, teaching, and researching language learning strategies, she provides examples of strategies and tactics from all levels, from beginners to distinguished-level learners, as well as a new taxonomy of strategies for language learning. In demonstrating why self-regulated learning strategies are necessary for language proficiency, Oxford integrates socio-cultural, cognitive, and affective dimensions, and argues convincingly for the need for conceptual cross-fertilization. Providing clear and concise explanations of the advantages and limitations of the different approaches, this book is full of practical value and theoretical insights.
